Pcr-Based Method For Identifying A Fusarium Wilt-Resistant Genotype In Plants, Ralph A. Dean, Yi-Hong Wang Oct 2001

Pcr-Based Method For Identifying A Fusarium Wilt-Resistant Genotype In Plants, Ralph A. Dean, Yi-Hong Wang

Clemson Patents

The present invention provides a sensitive assay for objectively determining the genotype of cucurbit plants, particularly species of melon, with respect to resistance or susceptibility to Fusarium wilt infection. The assay of the present invention uses a polymerase chain reaction to amplify sample DNA using either an AM or FM oligonucleotide primer pair. The PCR product which results from either primer pair differs in size, depending upon whether the template DNA was obtained from a plant susceptible or resistant to Fusarium wilt, permitting easy and rapid identification of plant genotype.

Sampling Switch Having An Independent "On" Impedance, Adrian K. Ong, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Maurice J. Tarsia

Electrical Engineering

A sampling device for sampling an input signal in response to a pulse train of a sample signal. The sampling device includes a sampling transistor for creating samples in response to the sample signal. The sampling transistor has an impedance corresponding with the difference between the gate to source voltage and the threshold voltage of the sampling transistor. The sampling device also includes a control device for generating a control signal. The control device includes a bootstrap reference voltage source for providing a reference voltage in response to the sample signal, and a control circuit for generating the control circuit …

… Given the lack of research on these phenomena, it is not surprising that we could find no studies that explore the effects of hierarchical independence and influence on school climate. The present study investigates both. Two schools form the basis of this comparative case study. ...

The Disappearing State Surpluses: How Come, How Long, And How Will They Affect Social Service Programs?, Randy Desonia

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief focuses on the impact of budget shortfalls being experienced by many states after several years of strong revenue growth. It describes the structure and sources of state revenues and spending and the causes of the shortfall. It also summarizes the fiscal trends and federal policies that could result in significant budget shortfalls in the future.

Crash Attenuation System, John D. Reid, John R. Rohde, Dean L. Sicking Oct 2001

Crash Attenuation System, John D. Reid, John R. Rohde, Dean L. Sicking

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

A crash attenuation system having an impact head, and energy absorption mechanism. The energy absorbing mechanism has a mandrel for rupturing thin-walled tubes in a controlled rupture to absorb impact forces from a colliding vehicle. A frame may be used to mount the system to a truck, trailer, guardrail, median barrier end treatment, or a crash cushion. Stress concentrators may be incorporated into the tubes and the mandrels to selectively control rupturing and energy dissipation.

Complementary Ansatz For The Neutrino Mass Matrix, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Salah Nasri

Physics - All Scholarship

We propose a simple Ansatz for the three generation neutrino mass matrix M_\nu which is motivated from an SO(10) grand unified theory. The Ansatz can be combined with information from neutrino oscillation experiments and bounds on neutrinoless double beta decay to determine the neutrino masses themselves and to reconstruct, with some assumptions, the matrix M_\nu.

Normal And Abnormal Tissue Identification System And Method For Medical Images Such As Digital Mammograms, John J. Heine, Laurence P. Clarke, Stanley R. Deans, Richard Paul Stauduhar, David Kent Cullers Oct 2001

Normal And Abnormal Tissue Identification System And Method For Medical Images Such As Digital Mammograms, John J. Heine, Laurence P. Clarke, Stanley R. Deans, Richard Paul Stauduhar, David Kent Cullers

USF Patents

A system and method for analyzing a medical image to determine whether an abnormality is present, for example, in digital mammograms, includes the application of a wavelet expansion to a raw image to obtain subspace images of varying resolution. At least one subspace image is selected that has a resolution commensurate with a desired predetermined detection resolution range. A functional form of a probability distribution function is determined for each selected subspace image, and an optimal statistical normal image region test is determined for each selected subspace image. A threshold level for the probability distribution function is established from the …

Wavelength Tunable Antenna Coupled Infrared Detectors, Glenn Boreman, Christos Christodoulou, Iulian Codreabu, Christophe Fumeaux, Michael Gritz

UCF Patents

A tuned antenna-coupled infrared detector is made possible by application of a bias voltage in the range of a few hundred millivolts. The use of first and second antenna arms connected to the detector makes possible polarization tuning which eliminates the need for bulk-optical polarization filters. An alternative tuned detector is one in which the antenna is frequency tuned by a capacitative device to make the detector particularly responsive to 8 um to 12 um infrared radiation. When integrated into focal plane arrays, these detectors can be used in remote-sensing systems to facilitate enhanced image recognition, feature extraction and image-clutter …

Apparatus For Low Flux Photocatalytic Pollution Control, Ali Raissi Oct 2001

Apparatus For Low Flux Photocatalytic Pollution Control, Ali Raissi

UCF Patents

A new apparatus for design and scale-up of photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes is disclosed. The apparatus is based on optimizing photoprocess energetics by decoupling of the process energy efficiency from the DRE for target contaminants and is applicable to both low- and high-flux photoreactor design and scale-up. The low-flux apparatus is based on the implementation of natural biopolymeric and other low-pressure drop media support for titanium dioxide and other band-gap photocatalysts and is further based on the implementation of multifunctional metal oxide aerogels and other media in conjunction with a novel rotating fluidized particle bed reactor.
