Multiracial Matrix: The Role Of Race Ideology In The Enforcement Of Antidiscrimination Laws, A United States-Latin America Comparison, Tanya K. Hernandez

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the role of race ideology in the enforcement of antidiscrimination laws. Professor Hernandez demonstrates the ways in which the U.S. race ideology is slowly starting to resemble the race ideology of much of Latin America. The evolving U.S. race ideology is a multiracial matrix made up of four precepts: (1) racial mixture and diverse racial demography will resolve racial problems; (2) fluid racial classification schemes are an indicator of racial progress and the colorblind abolition of racial classifications an indicator of absolute racial harmony; (3) racism is solely a phenomenon of aberrant racist individuals; and (4) focusing …

This Article will first look at the context of American e-commerce and the disjuncture between citizens' privacy and business practices. The Article will then turn to the international context and explore …

Encyclopedia Of Jihad, Alexei Malashenko, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu Jan 2001

Encyclopedia Of Jihad, Alexei Malashenko, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Western powers are the chief targets of a global Islamic jihad. Once believed to be a relic of history, the notion of Islamic jihad regained a political role in the 1980s. There are multiple meanings of the term jihad. While “great jihad” implies peaceful activity “small jihad” denotes the use of violence. There has never been a war in which Christians and Muslims have participated where the latter has not appealed to the slogan of holy war. The failure of Iran’s “white revolution” in 1979 set the stage for development of violent strategies against the West. The Chechen conflict …

Religious Brotherhoods In Chechnya, Yavus Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr. Jan 2001

Religious Brotherhoods In Chechnya, Yavus Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sufism is one of the most important religious movements in Chechnya. It is significant because it is a popular rallying point and, to the external world, it is not obvious who is or is not a member of these clandestine brotherhoods. Sufism gives its adherents an organizational basis that is somewhat like that of the early communist party. There are twenty-seven religious movements operating in Chechnya today. Kunta Hadji is one of the most important of these and is associated with the Qadiriya brotherhood, generally regarded as the second most important of the Soviet-era brotherhoods.

Following the first Chechen war, …

Islam In The North Caucasus: A People Divided, Yavus Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Religious diversity has had a dramatic impact on the development of the North Caucasus region. People do not indentify primarily with either a national or international Islamic community. The fundamentalist Vakhabite community has become a major regional force during the past decade in spite of numerous efforts to suppress its influence. Official suppression of the Vakhabites has resulted in the emergence of a clandestine Vakhabite network supported from abroad. Islamic radicals throughout the regions (mostly Saudi and North African Arabs) have joined with the Khattab group in order to receive military training in camps which are operated to support Arab …
