Confrontations And Compromise: Dispute Resolution At A Worker Cooperative Coal Mine, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Jan 2001

Confrontations And Compromise: Dispute Resolution At A Worker Cooperative Coal Mine, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

This paper compares dispute-resolution behavior at a large coal mine in South Wales at two times: when the mine was run as a conventional, hierarchical organization by British Coal and, several years later, when it was bought out by the employees and converted into a worker cooperative. Synthesizing themes from law and society, organizational theory, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) research, I demonstrate how shared ownership, flattened hierarchy, and cooperative ideology impact on disputing behavior. By changing from a hierarchical organization to a worker cooperative, the coal mine increased its level of procedural justice and transformed its dispute-resolution behavior to …

Consensus Evidence Evaluation In Resuscitation Research: Analysis Of Type I And Type Ii Errors, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2001

Consensus Evidence Evaluation In Resuscitation Research: Analysis Of Type I And Type Ii Errors, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: This paper addresses the following statistical question: ‘if genuine improvements in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) were discovered that doubled the probability of resuscitation success in a series of randomized clinical trials, would they be recognized and incorporated into consensus guidelines?’ Methods: Statistical powers for hypothetical individual clinical trials comparing experimental and control CPR were computed as a function of the study N when the true probabilities for immediate survival, 24 h survival, and discharge survival in the experimental group were twice those in the control group. Next, the binomial distributions describing the numbers of statistically significant studies in a series …

Simulating Quasi-Ballistic Transport In Si Nanotransistors, Kausar Banoo, Jung-Hoon Rhew, Mark S. Lundstrom, Chi-Wang Shu, Joseph W. Jerome Jan 2001

Simulating Quasi-Ballistic Transport In Si Nanotransistors, Kausar Banoo, Jung-Hoon Rhew, Mark S. Lundstrom, Chi-Wang Shu, Joseph W. Jerome

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Electron transport in model Si nanotransistors is examined by numerical simulation using a hierarchy of simulation methods, from full Boltzmann, to hydrodynamic, energy transport, and drift-diffusion. The on-current of a MOSFET is shown to be limited by transport across a low-field region about one mean-free-path long and located at the beginning of the channel. Commonly used transport models based on simplified solutions of the Boltzmann equation are shown to fail under such conditions. The cause for this failure is related to the neglect of the carriers' drift energy and to the collision-dominated assumptions typically used in the development of simplified …

Local Heat Transfer Distributions In Confined Multiple Air Jet Impingement, S V. Garimella, V. P. Schroeder Jan 2001

Local Heat Transfer Distributions In Confined Multiple Air Jet Impingement, S V. Garimella, V. P. Schroeder

CTRC Research Publications

Heat transfer from a discrete heat source to multiple, normally impinging, confined air jets was experimentally investigated. The jets issued from short, square-edged orifices with still-developing velocity profiles on to a foil heat source which produced a constant heat flux. The orifice plate and the surface containing the heat source were mounted opposite each other in a parallel-plates arrangement to effect radial outflow of the spent fluid. The local surface temperature was measured in fine increments over the entire heat source. Experiments were conducted for different jet Reynolds numbers (5000,Re ,20,000), orifice-to-target spacing ~ 0.5,H/d,4! , and multiple-orifice arrangements. The …

Biomechanics Of Heading A Soccer Ball: Implications For Player Safety, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2001

Biomechanics Of Heading A Soccer Ball: Implications For Player Safety, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

To better understand the risk and safety of heading a soccer ball, the author created a set of simple mathematical models based upon Newton’s second law of motion to describe the physics of heading. These models describe the player, the ball, the flight of the ball before impact, the motion of the head and ball during impact, and the effects of all of these upon the intensity and the duration of acceleration of the head. The calculated head accelerations were compared to those during presumably safe daily activities of jumping, dancing, and head nodding and also were related to established …

Bridgman Crystal Growth Of An Alloy With Thermosolutal Convection Under Microgravity Conditions, J. E. Simpson, S V. Garimella, H. C. Degroh Iii, R. Abbaschian Jan 2001

Bridgman Crystal Growth Of An Alloy With Thermosolutal Convection Under Microgravity Conditions, J. E. Simpson, S V. Garimella, H. C. Degroh Iii, R. Abbaschian

CTRC Research Publications

The solidification of a dilute alloy (bismuth-tin) under Bridgman crystal growth conditions is investigated. Computations are performed in two dimensions with a uniform grid. The simulation includes the species concentration, temperature and flow fields, as well as conduction in the ampoule. Fully transient simulations have been performed, with no simplifying steady state approximations. Results are obtained under microgravity conditions for pure bismuth, and for Bi-0.1 at.% Sn and Bi-1.0 at.% Sn alloys, and compared with experimental results obtained from crystals grown in the microgravity environment of space. For the Bi-1.0 at.% Sn case the results indicate that a secondary convective …

Human Interindividual Variability In Susceptibility To Airborne Particles, Dale Hattis, Abel Russ, Robert Goble, Prerna Banati, Margaret Chu Jan 2001

Human Interindividual Variability In Susceptibility To Airborne Particles, Dale Hattis, Abel Russ, Robert Goble, Prerna Banati, Margaret Chu

Sustainability and Social Justice

Part of the explanation for the persistent epidemiological findings of associations between mortality and morbidity with relatively modest ambient exposures to airborne particles may be that some people are much more susceptible to particle-induced responses than others. This study assembled a database of quantitative observations of interindividual variability in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters likely to affect particle response. The pharmacodynamic responses studied included data drawn from epidemiologic studies of doses of methacholine, flour dust, and other agents that induce acute changes in lung function. In general, the amount of interindividual variability in several of these pharmacodynamic response parameters was greater …

International Customers, Suppliers, And Document Delivery In A Fee-Based Information Service, Suzanne M. Ward, Linda L. Christie

Libraries Research Publications

The Purdue University Libraries library fee-based information service, the Technical Information Service (TIS) works with both international customers and international suppliers to meet its customers’ needs for difficult and esoteric document requests. Successful completion of these orders requires the ability to verify fragmentary citations; ascertain documents’ availability; obtain pricing information; calculate inclusive cost quotes; meet customers’ deadlines; accept international payments; and ship across borders. While international orders make up a small percent of the total workload, these challenging and rewarding orders meet customers’ needs and offer continuous improvement opportunities to the staff.

Acclimation To Hypoxia Increases Survival Time Of Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, During Lethal Hypoxia, Bernard B. Rees, F Sudradjat, J W. Love

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Survivorship of zebrafish, Danio rerio, was measured during lethal hypoxic stress after pretreatment in water at either ambient oxygen or at a lowered, but nonlethal, level of oxygen. Acclimation to nonlethal hypoxia (pO2 @ 15 Torr; ca. 10% air-saturation) for 48 hr significantly extended survival time during more severe hypoxia (pO2 @ 8 Torr; ca. 5% air-saturation) compared to survival of individuals with no prior hypoxic exposure. The magnitude of the acclimation effect depended upon the sex of the fish: hypoxia pretreatment increased the survival times of males by a factor of approximately 9 and that of females by a …

Managing Soils To Achieve Greater Water Use Efficiency: A Review, Jerry L. Hatfield, Thomas J. Sauer, John H. Prueger Jan 2001

Managing Soils To Achieve Greater Water Use Efficiency: A Review, Jerry L. Hatfield, Thomas J. Sauer, John H. Prueger

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Water use efficiency (WUE) represents a given level of biomass or grain yield per unit of water used by the crop. With increasing concern about the availability of water resources in both irrigated and rainfed agriculture, there is renewed interest in trying to develop an understanding of how WUE can be improved and how farming systems can be modified to be more efficient in water use. This review and synthesis of the literature is directed toward the understanding the role of soil management practices for WUE. Soil management practices affect the processes of evapotranspiration by modifying the available water in …

Impact Of Aeration On Maize Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Populations In Corn Stored In The Northern United States: Simulation Studies, Frank H. Arthur, James E. Throne, Dirk E. Maier, Michael D. Montross

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Historical weather data were used to divide the northern United States into five climatic zones based on the number of hours below 15.6°C (60°F), which is the approximate lower developmental threshold for the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, during a calendar year. A model for population growth and development of the maize weevil, which is integrated with a bin-cooling model, was used to predict temperature, relative humidity, number of larvae, and number of adults in unaerated and aerated corn during 1 yr of storage. In all zones, predicted temperature profiles in unaerated corn indicate that it would take 2-3 mo …
