International Monetary Trade And The Law Of One Price, Gabriele Camera, Johannes Winkler Jan 2001

International Monetary Trade And The Law Of One Price, Gabriele Camera, Johannes Winkler

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We endogenize circulation of currencies and price formation in a decentralized monetary trading environment with two countries and two currencies. In equilibrium sellers of homogenous goods may post prices in the national or also in the foreign currency, given unobservable buyers. valuations. We prove that, under different monetary regimes, the absence of well integrated international goods markets doesn.t necessarily imply a violation of the law of one price. We also illustrate the behavior of prices across regimes characterized by different degrees of monetary integration.

Participation Input And Participation Equality Within Cross-Cultural Computer Mediated Communication (Cmc) Environments, Roberto J. Mejias Jan 2001

Participation Input And Participation Equality Within Cross-Cultural Computer Mediated Communication (Cmc) Environments, Roberto J. Mejias

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The current study measured the influence of national culture, anonymity levels, and technological support (CMC and non-CMC) upon participation input and participation equality within and between forty-two U.S. and Mexican groups constituting a total of 469 participants. Results indicate that both U.S. and Mexican groups supported by CMC technology (i.e., group support systems) were more productive in generating participation input than corresponding manual groups. While U.S. manual groups generated more unique or non-redundant ideas than U.S. CMC groups, Mexican CMC groups in contrast, generated more unique ideas than Mexican manual groups. With regard to perceived participation equality, U.S. groups indicated …

The Value Relevance And Reliability Of Brand Assets Recognized By Uk Firms, Sanjay Kallapur, Sabrina Kwan Jan 2001

The Value Relevance And Reliability Of Brand Assets Recognized By Uk Firms, Sanjay Kallapur, Sabrina Kwan

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We examine the value relevance and reliability of brand assets recognized by 33 UK firms, and the stock price reaction to the announcement of brand capitalization. We find that brand assets are value relevant, i.e., associated with market values. However, the market capitalization rates of brands of firms with low contracting incentives—firms with no transactions that avoided the London Stock Exchange (LSE) rule requiring shareholder approval for acquisitions/disposals, and firms with industry-adjusted leverage below the sample median—are higher than those of firms with high contracting incentives. Thus there could be substantial differences in the extent of bias or error in …

Participation Equality: Measurement Within Collaborative Electronic Environments-A Three Country Study, Roberto W. Zmud, Roberto J. Mejias, Bruce A. Reinig, Isabel M. Martinez-Martinez Jan 2001

Participation Equality: Measurement Within Collaborative Electronic Environments-A Three Country Study, Roberto W. Zmud, Roberto J. Mejias, Bruce A. Reinig, Isabel M. Martinez-Martinez

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

While the engendering of participation equality is generally viewed as a desirable group process attribute, findings from prior empirical research are both inconsistent and inconclusive regarding the measurement of participation equality within collaborative electronically supported environments. One explanation for this inconsistency lies in the manner in which the “participation equality” construct has been studied and measured. Results of analyses performed across three distinct national cultures utilizing 86 experimental groups and over 660 participants from the United States, Hong Kong and Spain are presented with recommendations for future research involving the participation equality construct. This is a first paper in a …

The Variety And Quality Of A Nation's Trade, David Hummels, Peter J. Klenow Jan 2001

The Variety And Quality Of A Nation's Trade, David Hummels, Peter J. Klenow

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Not surprisingly, big countries trade more than small countries. In this paper we use data on shipments by 110 exporters to 59 importers in 5,000 product categories to ask: how? Do big countries trade larger quantities of a common set of goods (the intensive margin), a larger set of goods (the extensive margin), or higher quality goods? We find that the extensive margin accounts for two-thirds of the greater exports of larger economies, and one-third of the greater imports of larger economies. Richer countries export more units at higher prices. These calculations are useful for distinguishing features of trade models …

International Corporate Governance, Diane K. Denis, John J. Mcconnell Jan 2001

International Corporate Governance, Diane K. Denis, John J. Mcconnell

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We survey two generations of research on corporate governance systems around the world, concentrating on countries other than the United States. The first generation of international corporate governance research is patterned after the US research that precedes it. These studies examine individual governance mechanisms – particularly board composition and equity ownership – in individual countries. The second generation of international corporate governance research considers the possible impact of differing legal systems on the structure and effectiveness of corporate governance and compares systems across countries.

Gresham's Law Versus Currency Competition, Gabriele Camera, Ben Craig, Christopher J. Waller Jan 2001

Gresham's Law Versus Currency Competition, Gabriele Camera, Ben Craig, Christopher J. Waller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We develop a dual currency search model where agents can hold currency portfolios to buy goods, and analyze an agent's choice to spend safe dollars or risky home currency for internal trade. We focus on two equilibria: a currency competition equilibrium, in which the 'good' currency (dollars) is spent first and the 'bad' (risky home) currency is kept for later purchases, and a Gresham's Law equilibrium in which agents do the reverse. We prove that for the Gresham's Law equilibrium to prevail, trading frictions and the home currency risk must be small. Otherwise, extensive currency substitution occurs and the currency …

Prandtl-Number Effects And Generalized Correlations For Confined And Submerged Jet Impingement, C. -Y. Li, S V. Garimella Jan 2001

Prandtl-Number Effects And Generalized Correlations For Confined And Submerged Jet Impingement, C. -Y. Li, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

The influence of fluid thermophysical properties on the heat transfer from confined and submerged impinging jets is experimentally investigated. Results from previous studies at low and high Prandtl numbers (using air and Fluorinert liquid FC-77, respectively) are supplemented by new experiments for an intermediate Prandtl number (using water). Local heat transfer coeficients are obtained from a discrete heat source under axisymmetric confined and submerged jets. The parameter ranges studied include: orifice diameters of 1.59±12.7 mm, turbulent-flow Reynolds numbers of 4000±23 000, and orifice to heat-source spacings of 1±5 jet diameters. Generalized correlations for heat transfer rates are proposed based on …

Stalking Secret Law: What Predicts Publication In The United States Courts Of Appeals , Deborah J. Merritt, James J. Brudney Jan 2001

Stalking Secret Law: What Predicts Publication In The United States Courts Of Appeals , Deborah J. Merritt, James J. Brudney

Faculty Scholarship

Nearly four fifths of federal court of appeals opinions are unpublished. For more than 25 years, judges and scholars have debated the wisdom and fairness of this body of "secret" law. The debate over unpublished opinions recently intensified when the Eighth Circuit held that the Constitution requires courts to give these opinions precedential value. Despite continued controversy over unpublished opinions, limited empirical evidence exists on the nature of those opinions. Working with an especially complete dataset of labor law opinions and multivariate statistical methods, we were able to identify the factors that predict publication. Some of those factors, such as …

Explaining Home Bias In Consumption: The Role Of Intermediate Input Trade, Russell Hillberry, David Hummels Jan 2001

Explaining Home Bias In Consumption: The Role Of Intermediate Input Trade, Russell Hillberry, David Hummels

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We show that “home bias” in trade patterns will arise endogenously due to the co-location decisions of intermediate and final goods producers. Our model identifies four implications of home bias arising out of specialized industrial demands. Regions absorb different bundles of goods. Buyers and sellers of intermediate goods co-locate. Intermediate input trade is highly localized. The effect of spatial frictions on trade are magnified. These implications are examined and confirmed using a unique data source that matches the detailed subnational geography of shipments to the characteristics of the shipping establishments. Our results broaden the measurement and interpretation of home bias, …

Parameter Estimation And Measures Of Fit In A Global, General Equilibrium Model, Jing Liu, Channing Arndt, Thomas Hertel Jan 2001

Parameter Estimation And Measures Of Fit In A Global, General Equilibrium Model, Jing Liu, Channing Arndt, Thomas Hertel

GTAP Working Papers Archive

Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models have been widely used for quantitative analysis of global economic issues. However, CGE models are frequently criticized for resting on weak empirical foundations. This paper builds on recent work in macro-econometric estimation, developing an approach to parameter estimation for a widely employed global CGE model, the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model. An approximate likelihood function is developed and the set of optimum elasticity values is obtained by maximizing this approximate likelihood function in the context of a back casting exercise. In addition, two statistical tests are performed. The first of these tests compares the …

Time As A Trade Barrier, David Hummels Jan 2001

Time As A Trade Barrier, David Hummels

GTAP Working Papers Archive

International trade occurs in physical space and moving goods requires time. This paper examines the importance of time as a trade barrier, estimates the magnitude of time costs, and relates these to patterns of trade and the international organization of production. Estimates indicate that each additional day spent in transport reduces the probability that the US will source from that country by 1 – 1.5 percent. Conditional on exporting country, estimates directly identify a willingness-to-pay for time savings using variation across exporters and commodities in the relative price / speed tradeoff for air and ocean shipping. Each day saved in …
