Projecting Chromatic Aberrations, David L. Gibbs Jr., Phil Ryan, Jay S. Huebner Jan 2001

Projecting Chromatic Aberrations, David L. Gibbs Jr., Phil Ryan, Jay S. Huebner

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The chromatic aberration of lenses is a popular topic in introductory astronomy 1-4 and physics and is readily demonstrated on an optical bench to several students at a time. However, we are not aware of any published descriptions of demonstrations showing chromatic aberration that are useful for large lecture classes. This note describes a simple method of using an overhead projector and an extra lens for displaying chromatic aberrations in large lecture halls so it can be viewed by large audiences.

Development Of The Continuously Variable Volume Reactor For Use In Flow Injection Analysis, Elizabeth H. Medeiros, C Chad Harrell, Linda L. Lipe, Suzanne M. Purinton Jan 2001

Development Of The Continuously Variable Volume Reactor For Use In Flow Injection Analysis, Elizabeth H. Medeiros, C Chad Harrell, Linda L. Lipe, Suzanne M. Purinton

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Recognizing a need for an improved mixer/reactor, the continuously variable volume reactor (CVVR) was developed to address the need for remote unattended FIA manifold operation and the issue of manifold optimization. Development of the CVVR allows fully automated FIA analysis, and through its design allows the volume of the mixing coil to be changed dynamically as the sample bolus travels through the mixing coil to the detector. This is the first time this approach has been demonstrated in the literature.

Morphological Differences Among Two Populations Of The Hooded Pitcher Plant, Sarrancenia Minor, And Its Usefulness As An Indicator Species For Bog And Seepage Savanna Communities, Ryan Meyer, Justin Walguarnery, Dawn Beaulac, Kelly Hughes, Trish Brown Jan 2001

Morphological Differences Among Two Populations Of The Hooded Pitcher Plant, Sarrancenia Minor, And Its Usefulness As An Indicator Species For Bog And Seepage Savanna Communities, Ryan Meyer, Justin Walguarnery, Dawn Beaulac, Kelly Hughes, Trish Brown

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a model of Sarracenia minor morphology under various environmental conditions, which can then be used to assess the overall health of these ecosystems. Because S. minor is sensitive to disturbance it may be a good candidate for use as an indicator species. Decline in habitat quality should be detectable as changes in the population dynamics and morphology of S. minor, thereby indicating that intervention may be necessary to maintain habitat viability. For instance, a population that consists primarily of large mature individuals indicates that the habitat may not be suitable …

Micro-Rockets For The Classroom, Alice S. Fletcher, Julia A. Cato, Jennifer A. Barrett, Jay S. Huebner Jan 2001

Micro-Rockets For The Classroom, Alice S. Fletcher, Julia A. Cato, Jennifer A. Barrett, Jay S. Huebner

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Many people are fascinated with rocketry, as evidenced by hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Kennedy Space Center for Space Shuttle launches. Rockets demonstrate important basic principles of chemistry, engineering, and physics 1-5. Even model rockets are exciting to launch. Many physics teachers take advantage of this and use model solid fuel, 6 - 10 and water rockets 11-14 in their teaching activities. Scientific supply companies have responded to this interest and offer a range of equipment to investigate model rocket performance. 6,10,12,15 This note describes miniature solid fuel, or micro rockets, which are made from a single safety …

The Musical, Technical, And Compositional Qualities Of Latin American Music As Applied To The Marimba, Noel S. Milan Jan 2001

The Musical, Technical, And Compositional Qualities Of Latin American Music As Applied To The Marimba, Noel S. Milan

All Volumes (2001-2008)

After spending the last year and a half immersing myself in this project, I realize there are several lifetimes worth of research available in Latin American music. This project has challenged me to the limits of my ability as a student, a percussionist, and a musician, but it has also improved and motivated me. This music has become a part of me and I want to share what I have learned.

Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude: An Investigation Of Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude And Its Relation To Nonverbal Abilities, Karolina E. Christensson Ringby Jan 2001

Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude: An Investigation Of Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude And Its Relation To Nonverbal Abilities, Karolina E. Christensson Ringby

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study investigates sex differences in mechanical abilities. Numerous research findings support the existence of sex differences in mechanical aptitude as well as in other abilities. Recent research suggests that there is a relationship between mechanical aptitude and certain nonverbal reasoning (e.g., visual-spatial) abilities. Due to the possible links between these constructs, sex differences in a nonverbal measure of general intellectual functioning, made up of five subtests, were also evaluated. Thus, the purpose of this study is twofold: to investigate sex differences in mechanical aptitude and nonverbal abilities, and to explore the construct validity of all the measures employed. Females …

The Effects Of Sex Of Subject And Sex Of Target On The Perceived Humor Of Male And Female-Targeted Jokes, Danielle Curry Jan 2001

The Effects Of Sex Of Subject And Sex Of Target On The Perceived Humor Of Male And Female-Targeted Jokes, Danielle Curry

All Volumes (2001-2008)

It was hypothesized that males will rate female-targeted jokes as more humorous than male-targeted jokes. Similarly, females will rate male-targeted jokes as more humorous than female-targeted jokes. It is also predicted that males with favorable attitudes toward women, as measured by the Attitudes Toward Women Scale, will rate female-targeted jokes as less humorous than males with unfavorable attitudes toward women. Females with favorable attitudes toward women are predicted to rate female-targeted jokes as less humorous than females with unfavorable attitudes toward women. Males with favorable attitudes toward public policies aimed at reducing inequalities between the sexes, as measured by the …

Reactivity To Social And Nonsocial Challenges In Anolis Carolinensis, Sheetal Vyas Jan 2001

Reactivity To Social And Nonsocial Challenges In Anolis Carolinensis, Sheetal Vyas

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study is the first of its kind to observe reactivity style, an individual's consistent response to stress, in a non-mammalian vertebrate species. The responses to social and acute nonsocial stressors were investigated using Anolis carolinensis, a small arboreal lizard native to the Southeastern United States. Patterns of stress responses across various contexts were identified. The social stressor involved introducing one lizard to another, while the nonsocial stressors consisted of a Novelty and Restraint test. The lizards' behaviors, perch site selections, and skin color changes were recorded throughout each test. The results demonstrate that the perch height was the …

Supermarket Use And Exclusive Clauses, Emanuel B. Halper Jan 2001

Supermarket Use And Exclusive Clauses, Emanuel B. Halper

Hofstra Law Review

Although you can find it just about everywhere, the twenty-first century supermarket is hard to define. Consumers have no need to define them They tend to visit these huge and efficient emporia weekly or more often, and they know they can buy what they need there. That's all they need to know. Transactional lawyers who specialize in lease negotiations can't think of the supermarket solely as a place where they can buy food and other things. Defining the supermarket and distinguishing supermarkets from other kinds of stores that do business in shopping centers are essential skills for them. To a …

Earl Washington's Ordeal, Eric M. Freedman Jan 2001

Earl Washington's Ordeal, Eric M. Freedman

Hofstra Law Review

By way of preface to this Symposium, I offer an account of the ordeal of Earl Washington, who-having come within days of execution-was released from prison on February 12, 2001, after DNA evidence of his innocence finally proved conclusive to the Virginia authorities. I do so for two reasons.

First, I believe, both as a member of his legal team and a scholar, that history deserves an accurate account of the events. Second, more broadly, I believe that the case exemplifies many of the phenomena that contribute to the injustice of the death penalty in America today, and that its …

Wrist And Hand Injuries In The Athlete, Timothy L. Uhl, Philip Blazar, Greg Pitts, Kelly Ramsdell Jan 2001

Wrist And Hand Injuries In The Athlete, Timothy L. Uhl, Philip Blazar, Greg Pitts, Kelly Ramsdell

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Athletes subject themselves to considerable disability. No matter the sport, the hand and upper extremity are among the most commonly injured sites. Frequently, the most debilitating complications of these conditions are the result of misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. Unfortunately, many patients with these delayed and misdiagnosis injuries need to be treated with surgical procedures. To compound the dilemma in treating hand and wrist injuries in this population, one needs to appreciate the athletic personality and the mentality that wishes to dismiss hand injuries as minor. It is essential to educate athletes by clearly communicating the risks and complications inherent to …

Analysis Of Allelometric Behaviors And Social Organization In Domestic Sheep, Shole Cody Adams Jan 2001

Analysis Of Allelometric Behaviors And Social Organization In Domestic Sheep, Shole Cody Adams

Open Access Master's Theses

Although sheep are thought to be the first domesticated food animal, and have been around for thousands of years, little is known about their social structure. Knowing some of the behaviors exhibited by sheep has already helped shape modern animal husbandry. Becoming familiar with more of the vast array of social behaviors used by sheep could benefit animal husbandry even further. In the wild, sheep graze on large areas of land where there is little competition for food. However, some domesticated sheep spend very little time on open ranges and are often and are often forced to compete over condensed …

Factors Affecting Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy In Hiv Positive Injection Drug Users (Idus) And Non-Idus., Dipti R. Salgaonkar Jan 2001

Factors Affecting Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy In Hiv Positive Injection Drug Users (Idus) And Non-Idus., Dipti R. Salgaonkar

Open Access Master's Theses

The study of adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV positive Injection Drug Users (IDUs) has been largely neglected. Many clinicians believe that this group is too unreliable to take these medications, particularly in the early stage of their recovery from drug abuse when they are vulnerable to relapse. This is the first study of its kind to compare medication adherence rates between HIV positive injection drug users and non-users.

The medication adherence among IDUs and non-IDUs was compared in an HIV infected population (n=143) who were currently on antiretroviral therapy. The factors affecting medication adherence were also examined in the …
