Processing Improvement Of Moirã© Interferometry For Accurate Crack-Tip Deformation Measurement., Ridha Kamil Jan 2001

Processing Improvement Of Moirã© Interferometry For Accurate Crack-Tip Deformation Measurement., Ridha Kamil

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent research advancement of moiré interferometry has incorporated phase shifting, a technique for better accuracy and easier digital image processing. However, moiré interferometry with phase shifting also revealed some sensitivity problems. Background noise associated with the topography of the specimen and optical effect produces rough and discontinuous displacement fields, which makes it difficult to obtain accurate strains and stresses. In this research, two alternate methods that improve the sensitivity of moiré interferometry, with and without phase shifting is developed. The result is a smoother displacement fields with higher sensitivity at the crack tip area. A single edge notched bend specimen …

A Comparison Of The Instructional Effectiveness Of Intensive And Semester-Length Courses., Marc C. Seamon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A broad research literature base on the instructional effectiveness of intensive-format courses often finds the intensive courses equal or superior to semester-length versions, but many of the studies from which those conclusions are drawn were theoretically or methodologically flawed. This examination of student characteristics and instructional effectiveness in one matched pair of educational psychology classes found that students in the intensive version of the course performed significantly better than students in the semester-length course on posttests of content and questions tapping higher-order learning. Despite indications of better learning in the intensive-course group, the two groups of students did not differ …

Object-Oriented Expert System Design: Texpert., Maryam Farmani Jan 2001

Object-Oriented Expert System Design: Texpert., Maryam Farmani

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Object-Orientation is a powerful approach to managing complexity, which has received widespread attention in the past few years. Object-Oriented Design is based on a small number of basic concepts: object, classes, operations and relationships. Some important relationships are inheritance, message passing, and encapsulation. Different methods and notations have been proposed within this paradigm, and a Unified Modeling Language has been developed based on several of these methods. Most rule-based expert systems are not flexible enough to handle problems that mix logical deductions, rule-based inferences, and procedure execution, but mixed problems are common in modern society. Management decisions, for example, are …

A Prototype Automatic Dental Identification System (Adis)., Diaa Eldin Mohamed Nassar Jan 2001

A Prototype Automatic Dental Identification System (Adis)., Diaa Eldin Mohamed Nassar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this work we apply combined digital image processing and artificial neural network techniques in developing a prototype of an automatic dental identification system (ADIS) to be employed for postmortem forensic identification. The prototype ADIS follows a pyramidal image-matching architecture used in developing an analogous fingerprint comparison system. Owing to the differences in image natures, we used new techniques and modified some mathematical models. We introduce an adaptive technique for dental radiograph enhancement and an adaptive strategic searching technique for neural network training. The training and testing results we obtained are promising.

Interethnic Communication Apprehension: Another Look At Predictor Variables With More Diverse Populations., Kari Elizabeth Albertson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using an African-American sample, this study replicates the work of Toale and McCroskey (in press) on predictor variables associated with interethnic communication apprehension. Participants responded to Canary and Stafford’s (1992) relational maintenance strategies typology, Personal Report of Interethnic Communication Apprehension (PRECA), Person Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) and Neuliep and McCroskey’s (1997b) General Ethnocentrism scale. The results indicated that interethnic communication apprehension was not correlated with relational maintenance strategies used in interethnic relationships. Although trait communication apprehension and ethnocentrism were both predictive of IECA, ethnocentrism was more predictive, accounting for most of the variance in IECA scores. This study gives …

The Impact Of Statehood And Republican Politics On Women's Legal Rights In West Virginia, 1863-1872., Amanda Jean Ray

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While the nation debated the rights of citizenship and freedmen’s rights, legislators in the newly formed state of West Virginia instigated a legal revolution in women’s rights in the state. During the nineteenth century a married woman suffered “civil death” upon marriage in that she became the property of her husband. Thus, laws governing divorce, dower, and married women’s property held an unparalleled amount of control over a woman’s daily life. Oftentimes, issues of who could marry and remarry; who gained custody of minor children; who was entitled to alimony, maintenance, insurance, and curtesy; who had the ability to sue …

A Neural Network-Based Sensor Validation Scheme Within Aircraft Control Laws., Brian Michael Stolarik Jan 2001

A Neural Network-Based Sensor Validation Scheme Within Aircraft Control Laws., Brian Michael Stolarik

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1992 NASA launched its "faster, better, cheaper" initiative to increase the number of missions while decreasing mission cost and time. Accordingly, NASA began supporting research efforts to replace physically redundant systems on board spacecraft with analytically redundant systems. The sensor failure, detection, identification and accommodation (SFDIA) system eliminates physical redundancy by supplying neural network estimations for the pitch, roll, and yaw rate gyros. A Boolean logic scheme utilizes the estimations to detect and identify gyro sensor failures. Additionally, the SFDIA replaces a faulty sensor with its estimate to ensure nominal flight conditions after a sensor failure. The SFDIA was …
