Deviant Behavior And Victimization Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kevin A. Yoder, Ana Mari Cauce, Matt Paradise

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study used a high-risk population of runaway and homeless adolescents to investigate the effects of history of caretaker abuse and deviant subsistence strategies on victimization among adolescents. Based on a multisite sample of 974 homeless and runaway adolescents, logistic regression models were used first to examine factors predicting involvement in sexual and nonsexual deviant subsistence strategies and then to investigate the effects of deviant subsistence strategies on physical and sexual victimization when adolescents were on the streets. Results indicated that when controlling for all other factors, including histories of physical and sexual maltreatment in families of origin, street behaviors, …

Structure And Temporal Dynamics Of Populations Within Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Isolates, Jeffrey S. Hall, Roy C. French, Thomas Jack Morris, Drake C. Stenger Nov 2001

Structure And Temporal Dynamics Of Populations Within Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Isolates, Jeffrey S. Hall, Roy C. French, Thomas Jack Morris, Drake C. Stenger

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Variation within the Type and Sidney 81 strains of wheat streak mosaic virus was assessed by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis and confirmed by nucleotide sequencing. Limiting-dilution subisolates (LDSIs) of each strain were evaluated for polymorphism in the P1, P3, NIa, and CP cistrons. Different SSCP patterns among LDSIs of a strain were associated with single-nucleotide substitutions. Sidney 81 LDSI-S10 was used as founding inoculum to establish three lineages each in wheat, corn, and barley. The P1, HC-Pro, P3, CI, NIa, NIb, and CP cistrons of LDSI-S10 and each lineage at passages 1, 3, 6, and 9 were evaluated for …

Rapid Decisive Operations: An Assumptions-Based Critique, Antulio J. Echevarria Ii Nov 2001

Rapid Decisive Operations: An Assumptions-Based Critique, Antulio J. Echevarria Ii

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In support of the Joint community's efforts to develop a viable operational concept, the author argues that the Rapid Decisive Operations (RDO) concepts developers deserve high praise for attempting to link two relative properties--speed and decisiveness--but that the definition of RDO is at present incoherent and based on several deeply flawed assumptions. The author concludes that RDO creates dubious expectations and will likely fail to balance the strengths and weaknesses introduced by new technologies. He further recommends a method for identifying and addressing an operational concept s critical assumptions.

A Dipolar Coupling Based Strategy For Simultaneous Resonance Assignment And Structure Determination Of Protein Backbones, Fang Tian, Homayoun Valafar, James H. Prestegard Nov 2001

A Dipolar Coupling Based Strategy For Simultaneous Resonance Assignment And Structure Determination Of Protein Backbones, Fang Tian, Homayoun Valafar, James H. Prestegard

Faculty Publications

A new approach for simultaneous protein backbone resonance assignment and structure determination by NMR is introduced. This approach relies on recent advances in high-resolution NMR spectroscopy that allow observation of anisotropic interactions, such as dipolar couplings, from proteins partially aligned in field ordered media. Residual dipolar couplings are used for both geometric information and a filter in the assembly of residues in a sequential manner. Experimental data were collected in less than one week on a small redox protein, rubredoxin, that was 15N enriched but not enriched above 1% natural abundance in 13C. Given the acceleration possible with partial 13C …

A hydrodynamic and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2 Version 3 (Wells, 1997), is being applied …

Genetic And Environmental Risk Factors Associated With Colon Cancer, Shamma Rashed Khalfan Al-Naili Al-Shamsi Nov 2001

Genetic And Environmental Risk Factors Associated With Colon Cancer, Shamma Rashed Khalfan Al-Naili Al-Shamsi

Theses

Colorectal cancer represents one of the most common causes of mortality in the world. A major number of populations develop an adenoma by the age of 40s. Over the past years, it has become clear that genetic factors are of crucial importance in colorectal tumorigenesis. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is responsible of developing numerous colorectal cancers cases by causing mutations in the germline in adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) genes.

Colon cancer is considered the second most frequent cause of death in most of the Western countries. Colonic cancer is common in women and rectal in men. It arise in adenomatous …

Privacy Protection For Transactions Of Digital Goods, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Nov 2001

Privacy Protection For Transactions Of Digital Goods, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper we study the problem of how to protect users’ privacy in web transactions of digital goods. In particular, we introduce a system which allows a user to disclose his/her identity information (such as user account or credit card number) to a web site in exchange for a digital item, but prevents the web site from learning which specific item the user intends to obtain. The problem concerned here is orthogonal to the problem of anonymous transactions [RSG98], [RR98] but commensurate with the general problem of PIR (private information retrieval) [CGK95]

Pickup And Delivery Problem With Time Windows: Algorithms And Test Case Generation, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhe Liang Nov 2001

Pickup And Delivery Problem With Time Windows: Algorithms And Test Case Generation, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhe Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the pickup and delivery problem with time windows (PDPTW), vehicles have to transport loads from origins to destinations respecting capacity and time constraints. In this paper, we present a two-phase method to solve the PDPTW. In the first phase, we apply a novel construction heuristics to generate an initial solution. In the second phase, a tabu search method is proposed to improve the solution. Another contribution of this paper is a strategy to generate good problem instances and benchmarking solutions for PDPTW, based on Solomon's benchmark test cases for VRPTW. Experimental results show that our approach yields very good …

Hierarchical Text Classification And Evaluation, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim Nov 2001

Hierarchical Text Classification And Evaluation, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical Classification refers to assigning of one or more suitable categories from a hierarchical category space to a document. While previous work in hierarchical classification focused on virtual category trees where documents are assigned only to the leaf categories, we propose atop-down level-based classification method that can classify documents to both leaf and internal categories. As the standard performance measures assume independence between categories, they have not considered the documents incorrectly classified into categories that are similar or not far from the correct ones in the category tree. We therefore propose the Category-Similarity Measures and Distance-Based Measures to consider the …

Phylogenetics Of Paniceae (Poaceae), Melvin R. Duvall, Jeffrey D. Noll, Alexandra Minn Nov 2001

Phylogenetics Of Paniceae (Poaceae), Melvin R. Duvall, Jeffrey D. Noll, Alexandra Minn

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Paniceae demonstrate unique variability of photosynthetic physiology and anatomy, including both non-Kranz and Kranz species and all subtypes of the latter. This variability suggests hypotheses of independent origin or reversals (e.g., from C4 to C3). These hypotheses can be tested by phylogenetic analysis of independent molecular characters. The molecular phylogeny of 57 species of Paniceae was explored using sequences from the grass-specific insert found in the plastid locus rpoC2. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed some long-recognized alliances in Paniceae, some recent molecular phylogenetic results, and suggested new relationships. Broadly, Paniceae were found to be paraphyletic with Andropogoneae, Panicum was found to be …

Distributed Fault Tolerance In Optimal Interpolative Nets, Daniel J. Simon Nov 2001

Distributed Fault Tolerance In Optimal Interpolative Nets, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The recursive training algorithm for the optimal interpolative (OI) classification network is extended to include distributed fault tolerance. The conventional OI Net learning algorithm leads to network weights that are nonoptimally distributed (in the sense of fault tolerance). Fault tolerance is becoming an increasingly important factor in hardware implementations of neural networks. But fault tolerance is often taken for granted in neural networks rather than being explicitly accounted for in the architecture or learning algorithm. In addition, when fault tolerance is considered, it is often accounted for using an unrealistic fault model (e.g., neurons that are stuck on or off …

The Article also discusses rules concerning which transborder transmissions are likely to be covered by a country's national laws, as well as specific rules applying to the liability of intermediaries. Next, the Article summarizes the comparative findings and discusses the relevant …

馬克思主義概念翻譯在中國1900-1949, Yongye Xiao Nov 2001

馬克思主義概念翻譯在中國1900-1949, Yongye Xiao

Lingnan Theses

On The Choice Between The Stocking Rate And Time In Range Management, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Basudeb Biswas, E. Bruce Godfrey

Articles

A long standing question in range management concerns the relative importance of the stocking rate versus the length of time during which animals graze a particular rangeland. We address this question by analyzing the problem faced by a private rancher who wishes to minimize the long run expected net unit cost (LRENC) from range operations by choosing either the stock rate or the length of time during which his animals graze his rangeland. We construct a renewal-theoretic model and show that, in general, this rancher's LRENC with an optimally chosen stocking rate is lower than his LRENC with an optimally …

Sex And Race Differences In Electrocardiogram Use (The National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey), Amy L. Arnold, Kerry A. Milner, Viola Vaccarino Nov 2001

Sex And Race Differences In Electrocardiogram Use (The National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey), Amy L. Arnold, Kerry A. Milner, Viola Vaccarino

Nursing Faculty Publications

There are sex and race differences in many aspects of health care delivery. For example, blacks and women are less likely to receive aspirin and thrombolytic drugs. Blacks and women presenting with chest pain are less likely to be referred for cardiac catheterization. Blacks and women diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are also less likely to undergo cardiac catheterization. The gender differences in diagnostic evaluation after AMI appear more pronounced among younger women. The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association joint electrocardiography guidelines state that all patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with chest pain …

Cmm And Cmmi: A Comparison And Evaluation Of The Benefits Of Integrated Approach., Raghunath Shapkota

Student Work

Model based process improvement involves the use of a model to guide the improvement of an organization’s processes. Essentially, process capability is the inherent ability of a process to produce planned results. As the capability of a process increases, it becomes predictable and measurable, and the most significant cause of poor quality and productivity are controlled or eliminated. By steadily improving its process capability, the organization matures. One means of achieving this focus has been the use of a capability model. Models provide a common set of process requirements that capture best practice and practical knowledge in a format that …
