We investigated the molecular mechanisms by which pH-sensitive liposomes surpass the cytoplasmic and endosomal membranes to deliver their aqueous contents into the cytoplasm. Various liposome formulations were evaluated for their efficacy to mediate intracellular delivery of encapsulated material, including a novel sterically stabilized pH-sensitive formulation ((DOPE:CHEMS:DSPE-PEG2000 (6:4:0.3)) that was previously developed in our laboratories. In an attempt to fully characterize the nature of liposome-cell interactions different approaches based on a dual-labeling fluorescence assay were used. Our results indicate that the efficacy of interaction of pH-sensitive liposomes, both plain and sterically stabilized, with cells is strongly determined by the inclusion of …

Rapid Decisive Operations: An Assumptions-Based Critique, Antulio J. Echevarria Dr.
Rapid Decisive Operations: An Assumptions-Based Critique, Antulio J. Echevarria Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In support of the Joint community's efforts to develop a viable operational concept, the author argues that the Rapid Decisive Operations (RDO) concepts developers deserve high praise for attempting to link two relative properties--speed and decisiveness--but that the definition of RDO is at present incoherent and based on several deeply flawed assumptions. The author concludes that RDO creates dubious expectations and will likely fail to balance the strengths and weaknesses introduced by new technologies. He further recommends a method for identifying and addressing an operational concept s critical assumptions.
Chinese Information Warfare: A Phantom Menace Or Emerging Threat?, Toshi Yoshihara Mr.
Chinese Information Warfare: A Phantom Menace Or Emerging Threat?, Toshi Yoshihara Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author explores what he perceives to be China s pursuit of information warfare (IW) as a method of fighting asymmetric warfare against the United States. He believes the Chinese are seeking ways to adapt IW to their own style of warfare. Paradoxically, he observes that the Chinese have not gleaned their intelligence through espionage, but through careful scrutiny of U.S. IW in practice. The author examines those aspects of IW--PSYOPS, Denial, and Deception--that China believes provides the greatest prospects for victory in a conflict. Not surprisingly, Sun Tzu is interwoven into this emerging theory. Targeting the enemy s nervous …

We agree with Obrycki et al. (2001) that a broad-based ecological approach for new pest management technologies is desirable, but we unanimously and strongly disagree with some of their assumptions and conclusions about Bt corn. Bt corn is corn that has been genetically engineered to produce insecticidal proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. Because Bt corn is important for effective and ecologically sound management of lepidopteran pests of corn,we provide here relevant data, some of which is new, to help clarify the issues raised by Obrycki et al. (2001). Obrycki et al. (2001), citing Barry and Darrah (1991), claim that …
Bending The Rules Of “Professional” Display: Emotional Improvisation In Caregiver Performances, Jayne M. Morgan, Kathleen J. Krone
Bending The Rules Of “Professional” Display: Emotional Improvisation In Caregiver Performances, Jayne M. Morgan, Kathleen J. Krone
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Organizational norms of emotional expression are open to negotiation through improvised performances, as employees may bend or break emotion rules to gain more leeway in expressiveness and participate in the development of their own role identities in the workplace. In this ethnographic study, a dramaturgical perspective is used to analyze the processes and outcomes of emotional improvisation as observed among nurses, technicians, and physicians in a cardiac care center. It was found that the emphasis on maintaining a “professional” appearance in caregiving largely constrains actors to perform along their scripted roles. Results are discussed in terms of practical implications for …

The Hybrid Librarian: The Affinity Of Collection Management With Technical Services And The Organizational Benefits Of An Individualized Assignment, Gail Z. Eckwright, Mary K. Bolin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Collection management and technical services have a natural affinity that is not reflected in the organization of many academic libraries, where subject librarians are often aligned with reference. This article examines organizational and individual approaches to librarian assignment, along with the place of collection management in the organization.
Libraries are organized to provide service. The division of functions is designed to acquire materials, provide intellectual access to them, house and circulate them, and assist library users in finding information. The assignment of responsibility to librarians follows this organizational pattern. Specialties, positions, and job descriptions generally reflect a functional or departmental …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Recent advancements in describing morphological development of perennial grasses have provided a useful index for identifying dates to harvest hay or graze pasture. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) morphological developmental stage, days from 1 May, and accumulated growing degree days (GDD) and leaf/stem ratio, crude protein (CP), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in grazed and nongrazed swards. The grazing experiment was conducted in eastern Nebraska during 1997 and 1998. Six grazing treatments consisting of all combinations of two herbage allowances (22 or 66 kg of herbage dry matter …
Mummification To Plastination. Revisited, Muhammad Saeed, Amin A. Rufai, Saleh E. Elsayed
Mummification To Plastination. Revisited, Muhammad Saeed, Amin A. Rufai, Saleh E. Elsayed
Saudi Medical Journal
A brief summary of the history of anatomy is presented with particular focus on important scientists who contributed significantly to the development of anatomical education and recognition of anatomy as a discipline of science. An attempt has been made to review the history of preservation of human cadavers from earliest mummification methodology used by ancient Egyptians to the most modern technique of embalming and plastination of human cadavers, developed by Von Hagens during the period from 1979 to 1987. The need for use of modern teaching aids for instruction of topographic anatomy is also highlighted.

Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Gynecological admissions to the surgical intensive care unit vary from the obstetrical cases. Pregnant women are of prime age and can tolerate the pregnancy and delivery well. There are certain rare conditions or complications, which make the pregnant women9s life pass through a critical time. These are dealt with in a high dependency area, which is short of the intensive care unit. In King Khalid University Hospital there is no such arrangement, so the mildly affected and critically ill patients together are cared for in the surgical intensive care unit. The objective of this study is to study the …

Saudi Medical Journal
Carnitine palmityl transferase I is the key enzyme in the carnitine dependent transport of long chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial inner membrane and its deficiency results in a decrease rate of fatty acids beta-oxidation with decreased energy production. We reported a family of 3 affected siblings who are the product of a first degree cousin marriage. The first 2 presented with typical Reye-like syndrome with unconsciousness, hepatomegaly, hypoglycemia, hyperammonemia and very high liver enzymes. Liver biopsy showed steatosis. On screening of the complete family, the 3rd sibling was found to have hepatomegaly. The 3 siblings showed an acyl carnitine …
