Factors Affecting The Success Of Information Systems Projects, Iain Martin Jan 2001

Factors Affecting The Success Of Information Systems Projects, Iain Martin

Theses : Honours

This thesis looks at how accurately project managers can pre-predict what problems may arise during an Information Systems project they are about to commence based on their experience of previous projects. The second part investigates what actions a project manager is likely to take to expedite a troubled project. Both of these questions are investigated and it is found that while project managers can confidently predict which problems could arise, and how to take actions to rectify such actions when they occur, these problems still arise.

A Boredom Theory Of Youth Criminality, Julie-Anne Newton Jan 2001

A Boredom Theory Of Youth Criminality, Julie-Anne Newton

Theses : Honours

Boredom, although a regular occurrence among the general youth population of the modern society and a possible causal factor of truancy, drug use, suicide and crime, has been widely neglected within the fields of education, psychology, sociology, and criminology. Since it is the intention of this thesis to show that boredom is a causal factor of youth criminality which must be recognised and studied further, it is essential that boredom is thoroughly researched for both theoretical and practical reasons within the field of criminology. In a two part documentary analysis on boredom and youth criminality, this thesis demonstrates what makes …

Abundance, Distribution And Population Characteristics Of Western Grey Kangaroos (Macropus Fuliginosus, Desmarest 1817) In Yellagonga Regional Park, Amy Chang

Theses : Honours

Yellagonga Regional Park is located in the northwest corridor of Perth and constitutes 1400 hectares of wetlands, parkland, open forest and open woodland. Few studies have been conducted on the native fauna in the Park's upland habitats. For this reason, a study of the abundance and distribution of western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) was conducted. A walked survey using direct counts and individual recognition of kangaroos during winter, recorded a total of 123 kangaroos, 51 pouch young and 23 unidentified individuals in Yellagonga Regional Park, and a further 24 kangaroos and 18 pouch young at Edith Cowan University's Joondalup campus. …

Asymptotic Inference In Censored Regression Models Revisited, Chihwa Kao Jan 2001

Asymptotic Inference In Censored Regression Models Revisited, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

This paper establishes that regressors in the models with censored dependent variables need not be bounded for the standard asymptotic results to apply. Thus, regressors that grow monotonically with the observation index may be acceptable. It also purports to provide an upper bound on the rate at which regressors may grow.

United States Poverty In A Cross-National Context, Timothy Smeeding, Lee Rainwater, Gary Burtles Jan 2001

United States Poverty In A Cross-National Context, Timothy Smeeding, Lee Rainwater, Gary Burtles

Center for Policy Research

In this paper we use cross-national comparisons made possible by the LIS to examine America’s experience in maintaining a low poverty rate. We compare the effectiveness of United States antipoverty policies to that of similar polices elsewhere in the industrialized world. If lessons can be learned from cross-national comparisons, there is much that can be learned about antipoverty policy by American voters and policymakers. The United States has one of the highest poverty rates of all the countries participating in the LIS, whether poverty is measured using comparable absolute or relative standards for determining who is poor. Although the high …

Population Genetic Analysis Of Litopenaeus Setiferus Using Microsatellite Genetic Markers, Amy Oberhauser Ball Jan 2001

Population Genetic Analysis Of Litopenaeus Setiferus Using Microsatellite Genetic Markers, Amy Oberhauser Ball

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Litopenaeus setiferus, Atlantic white shrimp, is a commercially and recreationally valuable species, yet little is known of its population structure. Litopenaeus setiferus are found along the Atlantic coast from New York to St. Lucie, Florida, and from the Ochlockonee River on the Gulf coast of Florida to Campeche, Mexico. Gulf and Atlantic populations probably separated sometime during the last deglaciation period (10,000 to 20,000 years ago). In addition, the extensive freshwater ourflow of the Mississippi River may provide a physical barrier to gene flow, and concentrations of shrimp in Tabasco and Campeche Bay, Mexico, are thought to form a separate …

Fingerprint Recognition Using Neural Networks, Eng Hoe Kennie Yeoh Jan 2001

Fingerprint Recognition Using Neural Networks, Eng Hoe Kennie Yeoh

Student Works (2000-2009)

Traditional methods of fingerprint verification uses either complicated feature detection algorithms that are not specific to each fingerprint, or compare two fingerprint images directly using image processing toots. The former involves very complicated calculations and tedious algorithms, and the latter tend to work poorly. In this paper it is described a new method which takes the middle ground. This paper studies the implementation of the Fast Fourier Transform and Artificial Neural Networks into the recognition of fingerprints. With tests conducted on the implementation of the Fourier Transform as a method of fingerprint feature extraction, the use of the Fourier Transform …

Students' Perceived Usefulness And Relevance Of Communication Skills In The Basic Course: Comparing University And Community College Students, Stephen K. Hunt, Daradirek Ekachai, Darin L. Garard, Joseph H. Rust

Basic Communication Course Annual

Communication skills training is extremely important in terms of students' career choices. However, few studies have been conducted regarding differences between community colleges and four-year universities in terms of students' perceived usefulness and relevance of the study of communication in relation to career choice. The present study extends extant research by examining students' perceptions of this issue. The participants in Study 1 were 155 community college and 291 four-year university students and participants in Study 2 were 205 community college students. The results demonstrate that students at both institutions perceive that the skills learned in basic communication courses are useful …

Antiracist Pedagogy In The Basic Course: Teaching Cultural Communication As If Whiteness Matters, Kristen P. Treinen, John T. Warren Jan 2001

Antiracist Pedagogy In The Basic Course: Teaching Cultural Communication As If Whiteness Matters, Kristen P. Treinen, John T. Warren

Basic Communication Course Annual

As we have found in our experience as communication educators and scholars, there is a need for educators to understand the implications and impact of whiteness in the classroom. What we argue is typically missing in the basic course is an antiracist pedagogy. An antiracist pedagogy asks educators to understand the power and privilege inherent in whiteness, and asks educators to examine how whiteness affects their classroom, students, teaching strategies and attitudes toward students of color. In this essay, we offer four modifications to the basic course which are consistent with an antiracist pedagogy. The first modification involves re-examining the …

Rethinking Our Approach To The Basic Course: Making Ethics The Foundation Of Introduction To Public Speaking, Jon. A. Hess Jan 2001

Rethinking Our Approach To The Basic Course: Making Ethics The Foundation Of Introduction To Public Speaking, Jon. A. Hess

Basic Communication Course Annual

The basic public speaking course is often taught from a standpoint of effectiveness. That approach can be problematic due to the dangers of technique. The use of ethics as a foundation for public speaking can overcome this drawback and has other advantages. Included in these advantages are its fidelity to the subject matter, promoting more responsible use of power, improved fit with the liberal arts mission of higher education, and better meeting student needs.

Issues in implementing an ethics-based course are discussed, such as identifying ethical issues and engaging in dialogue. The model is illustrated through a description of one …

What's Basic About The Basic Course? Enriching The Ethosystem As A Corrective For Consumerism, Roy Schwartzman Jan 2001

What's Basic About The Basic Course? Enriching The Ethosystem As A Corrective For Consumerism, Roy Schwartzman

Basic Communication Course Annual

A marketplace mentality featuring the student as consumer reaches deeply into educational practice today. This essay examines the roots and implications of framing public speaking education in economic terms. The amorality of the marketplace could be supplemented by closer attention to how values infuse the communication process. A value-laden communication environment, or ethosystem, may contribute to greater student awareness of their obligations to others and yield a fuller description of communication education.

Communication And Professional Civility As A Basic Service Course: Dialogic Praxis Between Department And Situated In An Academic House, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz Jan 2001

Communication And Professional Civility As A Basic Service Course: Dialogic Praxis Between Department And Situated In An Academic House, Ronald C. Arnett, Janie M. Harden Fritz

Basic Communication Course Annual

Communication departments frequently offer basic service courses to other campus departments or schools. A communication course sensitive to the mission of the university or college of which it is a part, as well as to its own mission, allows programs that include such a course in their curriculum to distinguish themselves from competing programs. Additionally, such a mission-sensitive course further defines departmental and university identity, assisting in institutionalizing a mission. Offering such a course provides an opportunity for dialogic praxis to occur between departments situated within the context of a local institution. Dialogic praxis involves knowledge of one's own position, …
