Urinary Allantoin Excretion Of Finishing Steers: Effects Of Grain Adaptation And Wet Milling Byproduct Feeding, Ryan Mass, D. J. Jordon, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock Jan 2001

Urinary Allantoin Excretion Of Finishing Steers: Effects Of Grain Adaptation And Wet Milling Byproduct Feeding, Ryan Mass, D. J. Jordon, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A metabolism trial investigated microbial protein supply for finishing cattle. In Phase I, cattle were adapted to a dry-rolled corn diet. Urinary allantoin excretion was positively correlated with TDN supply. In Phase II, cattle were fed that diet or diets with a portion of the corn replaced by one of two levels of the corn wet milling byproducts steep liquor or distillers’ solubles. Byproducts inclusion did not increase microbial crude protein supply, as measured by urinary allantoin excretion. Rumen pH also correlated with microbial crude protein supply.

Economic Returns Of Wet Byproducts As Cattle Feed, Richard K. Perrin, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2001

Economic Returns Of Wet Byproducts As Cattle Feed, Richard K. Perrin, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Research at the University of Nebraska and other institutions has demonstrated the feasibility of feeding corn sweetener/ethanol industry byproducts directly to cattle in wet form, rather than marketing them as dried feeds. Using a combination of experimental results, survey data and market prices, the average value of these wet feed products was about $130 per ton of dry matter during the 1990s, compared to their alternative value as dried feed of $93 per ton. Given the amounts fed, the annual net benefits of this innovation in Nebraska grew from about $1 million in 1992 to an annual average of about …

Corn Processing Method In Finishing Diets Containing Wet Corn Gluten Feed, Tony Scott, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock Jan 2001

Corn Processing Method In Finishing Diets Containing Wet Corn Gluten Feed, Tony Scott, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two trials were conducted to determine the effects on performance and carcass characteristics of corn grain diets differing in degree of processing and containing wet corn gluten feed. Generally, more intensive processing methods such as fine-grinding, high moisture ensiling, and steam-flaking resulted in lower daily feed consumption compared to feeding rolled or whole corn. Feed efficiency and dietary net energy concentration tended to be improved by more intensive processing methods in finishing diets containing wet corn gluten feed.

Programmed Gain Finishing Systems In Yearling Steers Fed Dry-Rolled Corn Or Wet Corn Gluten Feed Finishing Diets, Tony Scott, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2001

Programmed Gain Finishing Systems In Yearling Steers Fed Dry-Rolled Corn Or Wet Corn Gluten Feed Finishing Diets, Tony Scott, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

One hundred sixty crossbred yearling steers were used in a completely randomized design to determine the response to a programmed gain finishing system in diets with and without wet corn gluten feed. Including a programmed gain phase in the finishing period reduced daily gain, hot carcass weight, fat thickness and marbling score in diets with and without wet corn gluten feed. Diets containing wet corn gluten feed increased daily gain, hot carcass weight and fat thickness compared with diets containing only dry-rolled corn. Programming gain improved efficiency but reduced net return per animal and increased cost of gain versus ad …

Annual Forage Production And Quality Trials, Burt Weichenthal, David Baltensperger, Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 2001

Annual Forage Production And Quality Trials, Burt Weichenthal, David Baltensperger, Kenneth P. Vogel

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two-year forage trials showed higher dry matter yields for winter triticale than for winter wheat while forage qualities were similar. Likewise, a spring triticale cultivar had higher dry matter yields than spring barley or oat cultivars when harvested for forage after heading, and forage qualities were similar. In summer trials, dryland forage sorghum and sorghum x sudangrass hybrids had higher crude protein, digestibility and energy values than irrigated forages because they were not as mature. Lower lignin content and higher digestibility resulted when the brown midrib trait was present in forage sorghum or sorghum x sudangrass hybrids.

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the legal and ethical implications of balancing fetal rights with maternal autonomy, particularly in cases where pregnant women consume alcohol, potentially harming the fetus. It argues that while fetal rights have gained recognition in tort law, criminalizing maternal conduct raises constitutional concerns, including privacy and equal protection. The analysis advocates for a balanced approach, combining moderate criminal sanctions with education and support programs to protect fetal health while respecting women's rights.

Expedited Hiv Testing: An Unnecessary Test That Is Allowing The State To Trample On A Woman's Constitutional Rights, Sheree Gootzeit Jan 2001

Expedited Hiv Testing: An Unnecessary Test That Is Allowing The State To Trample On A Woman's Constitutional Rights, Sheree Gootzeit

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that New York's expedited HIV testing for pregnant women is unconstitutional, ineffective, and invasive, violating Fourth Amendment rights and offering no significant benefits over existing laws. It asserts that the testing infringes on privacy, bodily integrity, and informed consent, while alternative methods like urine testing could achieve the same goals without such violations. The analysis emphasizes the need to protect women's rights during vulnerable periods while maintaining public health standards.

Betraying Women In The Name Of Revolution: Violence Against Women As An Obstacle To Democratic Nation-Building In South Africa, Suzanne A. Kim

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the contradiction between the formal legal advancements in gender equality and the persistent epidemic of violence against women in post-apartheid South Africa. Despite the African National Congress' (ANC) commitment to gender equality and the inclusion of women in political processes, the reality of widespread violence against women undermines the nation's democratic ideals and highlights the failure to address gender concerns within the broader nationalist agenda.

Fetal Neglect And State Intervention: Preventing Another Attleboro Cult Baby Death, Marilyn L. Miller Jan 2001

Fetal Neglect And State Intervention: Preventing Another Attleboro Cult Baby Death, Marilyn L. Miller

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the legal and ethical implications of the Rebecca Corneau case, where the state intervened in her pregnancy due to concerns about the viability of her fetus and her refusal of medical care based on religious beliefs. The court balanced Corneau's constitutional rights against the state's interest in protecting the fetus, ultimately prioritizing the latter. This decision highlights the tension between individual autonomy, religious freedom, and fetal rights, raising significant questions about the limits of state intervention in pregnancy.

A New Compensating Element For A Femtosecond Photoelectron Gun, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 2001

A New Compensating Element For A Femtosecond Photoelectron Gun, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Design and analysis of a new compensating element for improving the electron pulse front and compressing the pulse duration in a femtosecond photoelectron gun are described. The compensating element is a small metallic cylindrical cavity in which an external voltage is applied in such a way that a special electric field forms and interacts with the electron pulse. This electric field reduces the distances between the faster and slower electrons inside the cavity and efficiently compensates for electron pulse broadening caused by the photoelectron energy spread and space charge effects. Poisson's equation and the equation of motion are solved to …

Time-Resolved Structural Study Of Low-Index Surfaces Of Germanium Near Its Bulk Melting Temperature, Xinglin Zeng, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The structure of the low-index surfaces of germanium near its bulk melting temperature is investigated using 100-ps time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The surface is heated by 100-ps laser pulses while a synchronized electron beam probes the structure. Ge(111)was observed to remain in its incomplete melting structure up to at least Tm + 134 ± 40 K when heated by a 100-ps laser pulse. Both the Ge(100) and Ge(110) surfaces are observed to melt near the bulk melting temperature when heated with 100-ps laser pulses. Because of the low-diffraction intensity-to-background ratio at high temperatures and because of the temperature …

Optical Properties Of Wide Band Gap Indium Sulphide Thin Films Obtained By Physical Vapor Deposition, N. Barreau, S. Marsillac, J. C. Bernède, T. Ben Nasrallah, S. Belgacem

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Thin films of indium sulphide containing oxygen have been synthesized following a dry physical process. The constituents are deposited by thermal evaporation on glass substrates and then annealed under argon flow. Polycrystalline β-In2S3 containing oxygen thin films are obtained as soon as the temperature of annealing is between 623 and 723 K. In this paper, these β-In2S3 thin films have optically been studied. The optical band gap is direct. Its value is not dependent on the temperature of annealing. It is about 2.8 eV, which is higher than that of β-In2S3 …

Homoepitaxial films with atomic smoothness were achieved under the following growth conditions: substrate temperature 900 °C, gas pressure 40 Torr, and gas flow rates of H2/CH4 = 900/7.2 seem. The growth rate was 0.87 …

Effects Of Water Color On Food Web Structure In Freshwater Lakes, Bjoern Wissel Jan 2001

Effects Of Water Color On Food Web Structure In Freshwater Lakes, Bjoern Wissel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Water color has multiple effects on freshwater lakes, changing the vertical profiles of light, temperature, and oxygen. Therefore, increased water color should reduce planktivory by visually guided fish, but invertebrate predators such as Chaoborus should become more important. Since fish prefer larger prey but Chaoborus can only ingest smaller zooplankton, increased water color should cause a shift from small to large zooplankton species. To test this hypothesis, I analyzed two lake data sets to examine how water color affects the relative importance of fish and Chaoborus as planktivores. Subsequently, I studied the vertical migration behavior of the zooplankton prey in …

Leaders Pray With The Assembly, E Louise Williams Jan 2001

Leaders Pray With The Assembly, E Louise Williams

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

I wonder what it was that prompted the disciples' request. Had they watched Jesus praying, as was his custom, in a place apart and then seen him come back somehow changed-more refreshed, more serene, more focused, more disturbed? Had they overheard Jesus praying-the intimate conversation, the wrestling and struggle, the thanksgiving and praise, the intercessions? Had they remembered some admonition or invitation to pray? Did their own spirits feel dry and empty? Did they know some longing deep inside for a closer communion with the one Jesus called Abba? Was there in them some joy or anguish that needed …
