METHODS: A total of 113 patients with cerebral palsy and epilepsy was seen (67 boys, 46 girls) with an over all mean age 5.3 years (range .2-12 years) during the study period (January 1998 - December 1999). They all had clinical evaluation and standardized electroencephalographic studies interpreted by the same examiner. RESULTS: The main clinical features were language delay (61%), hypotonia (45%), hypertonia (38%), and behavioral abnormalities (41%). Seizure types included generalized in 96 …

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: The diabetic autonomic neuropathy is a poorly studied subject in our medical literature. This study is aimed at investigating the presence of diabetic autonomic neuropathy in a group of Sudanese diabetic patients and its relationship to factors like glycemic control, duration of diabetes and presence of peripheral neuropathy. METHODS: During one year we examined 120 diabetic patients and an age-matched control group of 42 by applying a battery of 5 cardiovascular autonomic tests, beside a full history and clinical examination. The patients were also tested for glycemic control and presence of peripheral neuropathy. RESULTS: Diabetic autonomic neuropathy was diagnosed …

Therapeutic Functional Electrical Stimulation In Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy, Fathya. A. Elshazly Jan 2001

Therapeutic Functional Electrical Stimulation In Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy, Fathya. A. Elshazly

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral palsy is a chronic non-progressive disorder of early onset primary effects of cerebral palsy include muscle spasm or tightness, involuntary movements, abnormal gait patterns, abnormal sensation and perception. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation can be effective means of managing increased muscle tone, of facilitating voluntary motor control, and of improving gait pattern. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of therapeutic electrical stimulation on gait patterns in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy and to investigate to which extent the increased muscle tone will be decreased after electrical stimulation. METHODS: Twenty two children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, their …

Metaphase Acrocentric Associations In Metally Retarded Patients, Akeel A. Yasseen, Thekra A. Al-Musawi

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: The metaphase of 21 severely mentally retarded patients were studies to assess the role of satellite association in the etiology of mental retardation. METHODS: Peripheral blood culture, chromosome harvesting and study scoring were conducted according to standard methods. RESULTS: Considered as a whole the results indicate that there is a significant increase in the frequency of satellite association among the mentally retarded. CONCLUSION: The present study concluded that satellite association may play a role in the etiology of mental retardation and may explain to some extent the presence of normal karyotype in some mental retardation patients.

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: To determine the usefulness of cerebrospinal fluid tests in the diagnosis of neurosyphilis. METHODS: Two hundred and seven cerebrospinal fluid-Venereal Disease Research Laboratories tests were performed at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between 1992 and 1997. The records of 14 cases with progressive neurological disease and reactive serum fluorescent treponemal absorbent antibodies or treponemal pallidum hemagglutination test were reviewed for clinical presentation, cerebrospinal fluid analysis and Venereal Disease Research Laboratories, neuro-imaging abnormalities and compatibility with the diagnosis of neurosyphilis. The diagnosis of neurosyphilis was made if the patient had reactive serum fluorescent treponemal absorbent …

METHODS: Electrocardiogram signals from 8 normal subjects and 8 diabetic patients were measured and recorded in the supine position for a 15 minute period. Heart rate variability signals extracted from electrocardiograms were recorded on FM recorder …

Sixth Nerve Palsy Of Para-Infectious Origin, Dirk Deleu, Menandros Lagopoulos Jan 2001

Sixth Nerve Palsy Of Para-Infectious Origin, Dirk Deleu, Menandros Lagopoulos

Neurosciences

Acute abducens palsy of para-infectious origin is uncommon in adulthood. We present the case history of a 28-year-old woman suffering from acute onset diplopia due to abducens palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed signs suggestive of frank ipsilateral maxillary sinusitis. The lack of anatomical relationship between the maxillary sinus and the abducens nerve led us to conclude that the abducens palsy was of para-infectious origin.

An Infant With Isolated Lissencephaly, Slim Jouini, Abdulla S. Al-Awashiz, George I. Izoura

Neurosciences

Lissencephaly or agyria is a prototype of disorders of neuronal migration, a rare type of hereditary malformation of the brain, which manifests with smooth cerebral surface, poorly defined sylvian fissures with thickened cerebral cortical mantle. A case of an infant with isolated variety is presented highlighting some of the major associated clinical features, which include profound intellectual impairment, seizures and hypotonia that later evolves to spasticity in the 2nd year of life. Morbidity is usually high and mortality is dependent on associated deficits.
