Expansion Of Postpartum/Postabortion Contraception In Honduras, Ruth Medina, Ricardo Vernon, Irma Mendoza, Claudia Aguilar
Expansion Of Postpartum/Postabortion Contraception In Honduras, Ruth Medina, Ricardo Vernon, Irma Mendoza, Claudia Aguilar
Reproductive Health
The Honduran Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Population Council’s INOPAL III Project tested the acceptability of postpartum/postabortion contraception at the Escuela Hospital, the largest in the country. The project showed that more than 30 percent of the women seen for a delivery or a complication due to abortion, were interested in adopting a contraceptive method prior to discharge from the hospital. Given the success of the project, the MOH asked the Population Council’s FRONTIERS program for technical and financial support to extend those services to five additional hospitals in the country. Important improvements were found for the four indicators …
Promoting Reproductive Health Services In Rural Communities In Honduras, Irma Mendoza, Ricardo Vernon
Promoting Reproductive Health Services In Rural Communities In Honduras, Irma Mendoza, Ricardo Vernon
Reproductive Health
Using the results of a previous operations research study, the Ministry of Health of Honduras recently changed the National Women’s Health Service Delivery Guidelines to explicitly authorize nurse auxiliaries to insert IUDs, deliver Depo-Provera, and take Pap smears. These services are new to the rural communities served by rural health centers (RHCs). The objective of this project was to test whether the demand for these newly introduced services would increase if a promotional brochure was distributed in the surrounding communities by the RHC’s clients among potentially interested friends in these communities. The study found that the intervention that was tested …

An Assessment Of Youth Centres In South Africa, Annabel Erulkar, Mags Beksinska, Queen Cebekhulu
Reproductive Health
Within South Africa there is much interest in expanding youth center programs, particularly in the nongovernmental sector, in part because of recognition that the HIV/AIDS crisis is disproportionately affecting young South Africans. This study was designed to give implementing agencies and donors a broad view of how the youth centers function, who they reach, and the quality of information and services. The assessment underscored the importance of monitoring the performance of programs and understanding who is being reached with what interventions. Youth centers that focus on providing recreational facilities attract a large number of clients, often boys who are repeat …

An Assessment Of The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council's Community Based Distribution Programme, Baker Ndugga Maggwa, Ian Askew, Caroline S. Marangwanda, Ronika Nyakauru, Barbara Janowitz
Reproductive Health
Since its inception, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council’s (ZNFPC) community-based distribution (CBD) program has made significant and well-documented contributions to the demand for and use of family planning in Zimbabwe. Data from several studies have shown, however, a steady decline in this contribution and that the CBD agents spend more time resupplying existing clients than recruiting new acceptors. Moreover, the CBD program urgently needs to be able to address the AIDS crisis in the country. ZNFPC has undertaken this review to guide it in making appropriate decisions about the future direction of the program, allowing CBDs to have a …

An Assessment Of The Alternative Rites Approach For Encouraging Abandonment Of Female Genital Mutilation In Kenya, Jane Chege, Ian Askew, Jennifer Liku
Reproductive Health
Maendeleo Ya Wanawake (MYWO), with technical assistance from the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), has been implementing an Alternative Rite of passage programme as part of its efforts to eradicate the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in five districts in Kenya. This study addressed the factors that influence some families and individuals to adopt the Alternative Rite while others, exposed to the same messages discouraging FGM, decide not to. It also evaluated the effect of the training component of the Alternative Rite on the girls who participated.

Strengthening Social Science Research On Women's Health: Lessons Learned From A Capacity Building Programme, M.E. Khan, Bella C. Patel, John Townsend
Reproductive Health
The International Conference on Population and Development in 1994 led to an upsurge in interest in implementing reproductive health (RH) programs worldwide. The urgency to act has led to the development of disparate activities in several developing countries including India. While programs have been growing in numbers, their quality is in question. A fundamental problem has been lack of capacity at all levels of the health service system to respond to the paradigm shift articulated by the advocates of the reproductive health and rights agenda. To redesign programs, considerable research must be undertaken to understand the health needs and sociocultural …

The Great Divide: A Comparison Of Kentucky And Ohio Counties Along The Ohio River (1840-1860), Jennie Berry
The Great Divide: A Comparison Of Kentucky And Ohio Counties Along The Ohio River (1840-1860), Jennie Berry
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
This paper operates under an opposite assumption and, instead, argues that the Kentucky-Ohio border is an ideal test case for the null hypothesis that the institution of slavery per se had no significant economic effects. Kentucky and Ohio counties tracing the Ohio River are composed of the same soil and face similar weather conditions (Blanford, 2001; Barnhisel, 2001; Foster, 2001). Both regions likewise claim the same geographical access to outside markets.
Relationships Among Wine Prices, Ratings, Advertising, And Production: Examining A Giffen Good, Carol Miu
Relationships Among Wine Prices, Ratings, Advertising, And Production: Examining A Giffen Good, Carol Miu
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
It has become increasingly popular for statistics to be used in the prediction of wine prices. In fact, the prices of mature wines produced in the Bordeaux region of France have been accurately predicted by vintage growing-season characteristics. This paper analyzes the relationships among wine prices, ratings, advertising, and production, using data obtained from a wine ratings magazine, Wine Spectator. It presents a model of wine price based on information about production quantity, vintage, country of origin, and wine type. This paper then examines the scoring method of Wine Spectator by evaluating the effects of wine price on wine rating. …
The Effects Of Fiscal Decentralization On Health Care In China, Emily Yee
The Effects Of Fiscal Decentralization On Health Care In China, Emily Yee
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
From my analysis, I conclude that decentralization has not been detrimental to health care when health care performance is measured by the number of doctors per 10,000 people, mortality rates, and local health care expenditure. However, the effects of decentralization on health care are inconclusive when health care performance is measured by the number of hospital beds per 10,000 people.
This paper is divided into five sections. The first section discusses theories of federalism. The second section presents an overview of China’s economic reforms since 1980. The third section discusses the current state of health care in China and its …

Resistance Theory And The Transculturation Hypothesis As Explanations Of College Attrition And Persistence Among Culturally Traditional American Indian Students, Terry Huffman
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This paper reports the findings of a qualitative research investigation on the educational experiences of 69 American Indian college students. Specifically, the data involving two groups of culturally traditional students (estranged students and transcultural students) are considered. Estranged students are culturally traditional American Indian students who experienced intense alienation while in college and, subsequently, fared poorly academically. Conversely, transculturated students are also culturally traditional students. However, these students overcame acute alienation and generally experienced successful college careers. After an examination of the dominant theoretical perspectives on American Indian educational achievement and attrition, the findings of the research are extended to …

From Pronatalism To Social Welfare? Extending Family Allowances To Minority Populations In France And Israel, Leslie King
From Pronatalism To Social Welfare? Extending Family Allowances To Minority Populations In France And Israel, Leslie King
Sociology: Faculty Publications
An inherent tension exists between the goals of pronatalism and the actual policies through which law makers have often attempted to raise birth rates. Proponents of pronatalism often prefer to raise births only to specific racial/ethnic or national groups; yet in modern democracies, it is unacceptable for social policies to explicitly discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, or national origin. Social benefits, such as family allowances, must be accessible to all citizens. The recent extension of certain previously denied family benefits to minority populations in France and Israel illustrates this tension and points to a future direction in which …

Coastal Effects Of Hurricane Floyd On San Salvador Island, Bahamas, H. Allen Curran, Priscilla Delano, Brian White, Meredith Barrett
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Hurricane Floyd, a Category 4 storm with winds up to I 55 mph, made a close encounter with San Salvador Island on September 13-14, 1999. In addition to inflicting severe damage to homes, tourist facilities, businesses, and infrastructure on the island, the storm also caused considerable beach erosion and coastal modification, mostly on the western and northern coasts. This paper reports and documents with photos the findings of a survey of coastal erosion effects on four areas of the San Salvador coastline: Coast Guard Beach, Rocky Point south to Cockburn Town and Fernandez Bay, South of Sugarloaf toward Grotto Bay, …

Neurocysticercosis, Ahmed E. Hamad, Mahmoud F. Fawzi
Neurosciences
Cysticercosis is a helmenthic infection involving pigs and man. Most cases of cysticercosis occur in developing countries. The disease is very rare in Islamic countries, as moslems are supposed to abstain from eating pork meat. In the last 10 years, reports of cysticercosis among moslems were published. Imigrants from endemic countries, who work as housemaids and food handlers played a role in transmitting the disease. Man becomes a definitive host if he ingests insufficiently cooked pork meat, which contains viable Iarvae of Taenia Solium or cysticerci. Neurocysticercosis denotes presence of a Taenia Solium larva cysts (Cysticercus cellulosae) in the brain …

Concise Outline Of The Nervous System Examination For The Generalist, Mohammedm. S. Jan, Amira R. Al-Buhairi, Saleh S. Baeesa
Neurosciences
Many students, residents and generalists consider examining the nervous system as one of the most difficult parts of the physical examination. Certain problems frequently face the junior physician including organizing a complete examination in a short period, and consistently eliciting the physical signs. Certainly, repeated examinations and experience play an important role, however, solid knowledge and use of proper techniques are crucial for eliciting and interpreting neurological signs. In this paper we present an outline for the examination of the nervous system based on the medical literature and author’s personal experience. Various techniques of eliciting physical signs and possible pitfalls …
