The Consequences Of School Desegregation: The Mismatch Between The Research And The Rationale, Amy Stuart Wells
The Consequences Of School Desegregation: The Mismatch Between The Research And The Rationale, Amy Stuart Wells
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
This article challenges the narrow way in which the "consequences" of school desegregation have been defined - namely as measured by standardized test scores alone. This article serves as a reminder that in the early, pre-Brown cases, the Supreme Court argued that the purpose of school desegregation was to assure "wider association" for African American students who had been cut off from high-status educational institutions and the honor and social networks they confer. The bulk of social science research on school desegregation has ignored this rationale as researchers mostly examined students' test scores after only one or two years of …
Anti-Vibrator Legislation: The Law Is On Shaky Ground, Nicole Schilder
Anti-Vibrator Legislation: The Law Is On Shaky Ground, Nicole Schilder
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
This Note confronts the absurdity of laws that ban the sale and production of sexual devices. These laws are imbedded in the obscenity statutes of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia. The Note commences with a history of sexual devices in the United States. The Note proceeds to use the 11th Circuit case of Williams v. Pryor and cases from Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, and Texas to demonstrate that anti-sexual device statutes are unconstitutional because they infringe on the privacy right or, in the alternative, are overbroad and thus must fail under the rational basis test.

Reovirus 1/L As A Model To Study The Induction Of Optimal Immunity At Mucosal And Systemic Sites, Sherry Renee Crowe
Reovirus 1/L As A Model To Study The Induction Of Optimal Immunity At Mucosal And Systemic Sites, Sherry Renee Crowe
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Achieving protective immunity at mucosal sites is critically important for effective immunization against pathogens that colonize the host via the wet epithelium. We utilized reovirus 1/L infection of mice to study immunization strategies for the induction of optimal humoral and cell-mediated immunity at mucosal surfaces. The humoral and cell-mediated responses at mucosal and systemic sites were monitored following upper respiratory tract, or systemic inoculation. Utilizing these models, we found that the combined upper and lower respiratory tract inoculation resulted in optimal humoral immunity proximally (in the respiratory tract), distrally (in the oral, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts), and systematically. This immune …
Consequences Of E.U. Airline Deregulation In The Context Of The Global Aviation Market, Moritz Ferdinand Scharpenseel
Consequences Of E.U. Airline Deregulation In The Context Of The Global Aviation Market, Moritz Ferdinand Scharpenseel
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
The objective of this article is to show the background of the airline liberalization process in the E.U. and to evaluate its economic effects in context of the global aviation market. To understand the pressures for change and the forms that the changes are taking, it is first necessary to ap-preciate why market regulation was thought important and how the U.S. de-regulated its airline industry. Therefore, Section II of this paper will analyze the different market structures in the U.S. and the E.U. In Section III, the discussion will continue with a consideration of the effects of U.S. airline deregulation. …

Electronic Resources: A Wolf In Sheep’S Clothing?, Bradley L. Schaffner
Electronic Resources: A Wolf In Sheep’S Clothing?, Bradley L. Schaffner
Staff and Faculty Work
This article examines the impact of electronic technology on libraries and scholarship. It focuses on some of the challenges of using electronic resources in research libraries, which include the cost of acquiring electronic formats and the effect that such expenditures have on other library services and collection development practices. The article also explores how electronic resources have changed the way students and scholars conduct research. The goal of this essay is not to criticize or condemn electronic formats but, rather, to illustrate that electronic technology is simply one tool, among others, for the dissemination of information. As such, electronic resources …

What We Know About Minnesota's First Endangered Fish Species: The Topeka Shiner, Jay T. Hatch
What We Know About Minnesota's First Endangered Fish Species: The Topeka Shiner, Jay T. Hatch
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The Topeka shiner, Notropis topeka, is the first of Minnesota's native ichthyofauna to be classified as federally endangered. The species is in serious decline in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa but is far more common in Minnesota than once was thought. At present, it is known from 89 sites in 17 streams of the Missouri River Drainage. Topeka shiners are multiple-clutch spawning nest associates of sunfishes and reproduce over an eight- to ten-week period between late May and early August. Mean clutch size is 261 to 284. Longevity is three years. Males grow faster than females, reaching longer mean total …

Karst Occurrence In Kentucky, Randall L. Paylor, James C. Currens
Karst Occurrence In Kentucky, Randall L. Paylor, James C. Currens
Map and Chart--KGS
This map was compiled from a digital version of the 1:500,000-scale geologic map of Kentucky (Noger, M.C., comp., 1988, Geologic map of Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey). The areas of potential karst development were delineated using stratigraphic units mapped on the geological map. The classification of the potential for karst development was based on the field experience of the authors and other data. A number of isolate carbonated unites that would not have otherwise been differentiated on the geologic map were newly digitized for this map.

Generalized Block Diagram Of The Pine Mountain Karst, James C. Currens
Map and Chart--KGS
Karst occurs where limestone or other soluble bedrock is near the earth's surface, and fractures in the rock become enlarged when the rock dissolves. Sinkholes and sinking streams are two surface features that indicate karst development. In karst areas most rainfall sinks underground, resulting in fewer streams flowing on the surface than in non-karst settings. Instead of flowing on the surface, the water flows underground through caves to eventually discharge at a base-level spring along a major stream or at the top of an impermeable strata. The development of karst features is influenced by the type of soluble rock and …

Exploring A Small Thrust Fault And Related Features On U.S. Highway 62/68, Near Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, Paul Edwin Potter, John Grover, Gregory A. Schumacher
Map and Chart--KGS
One of the most unusual highway cuts in all of Kentucky is located approximately 395 ft (120 m) south of the high bridge that crosses Lawrence Creek on U.S. Highway 62/68, near Maysville, Mason County (see Figs. 1-2). The Carter coordinate location of the outcrop is 400 FSL x 900 FEL, 24-AA-69, which corresponds to 38°40'3" N latitude, 83°48'10" W longitude. The roadcut is approximately 1,315 ft (400 m) long, and rises in benches to a height of almost 110 ft (33 m). About 30 to 36 ft (9 to 11 m) of the Grant Lake Limestone is exposed at …

Mineral And Fuel Resources Map Of Kentucky, Warren H. Anderson, Garland R. Dever Jr.
Mineral And Fuel Resources Map Of Kentucky, Warren H. Anderson, Garland R. Dever Jr.
Map and Chart--KGS
The production of minerals and fuels in Kentucky is a multibillion dollar industry. Historically, coal, oil, natural gas, limestone, sand and gravel, clay, fluorite, barite, lead, iron, phosphate, zinc, and brines have been produced in the state. These resources have greatly influenced the development of Kentucky by providing raw materials for the early settlers who settled the state and for current industrial and economic development. Electrical power for homes, businesses, and factories; materials for constructing houses, buildings, automobiles, and roads; and products we consume in everyday life come from the earth's mineral and fuel resources.

In karst areas most rainfall sinks underground, resulting in fewer streams flowing on the surface than in non-karst settings.
