Arachidonate Metabolism And The Signaling Pathway Of Induction Of Apoptosis By Oxidized Ldl/Oxysterol, Sankhavaram R. Panini, Lin Yang, Antonio E. Rusinol, Michael S. Sinensky, Joseph V. Bonventre, Christina C. Leslie

Owing at least in part to oxysterol components that can induce apoptosis, oxidized LDL (oxLDL) is cytotoxic to mammalian cells with receptors that can internalize it. Vascular cells possess such receptors, and it appears that the apoptotic response of vascular cells to the oxysterols borne by oxLDL is an important part of the atherogenic effects of oxLDL. Thus, an analysis of the signaling pathway of apoptotic induction by oxysterols is of value in understanding the development of atherosclerotic plaque. In a prior study, we demonstrated an induction of calcium ion flux into cells treated with 25-hydroxycholesterol (25-OHC) and showed that …

Musicnet & Pressplay: To Trust Or Antitrust?, Kelly Donohue
Duke Law & Technology Review
Efforts by leading record labels to fill the void they created by shutting down Napster led several to develop their own subscription online music service. The author of the following iBrief assesses the viability of those services in light of a Justice Department antitrust investigation into the practices of the labels in allegedly quashing smaller distributors and colluding to stifle competition, and considers the ramifications of an antitrust suit for both the major labels and their competitors.

Why The Corporate Amt Should Be Retained, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah
Why The Corporate Amt Should Be Retained, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah
Articles
The corporate AMT is under attack. Repeal has been proposed by the White House, endorsed by the ABA/AICPA/TEI tax simplification project, and included in the stimulus bill passed by the House of Representatives. Repeal is supported on two principal grounds: That the corporate AMT increases complexity, and that it is pro-cyclical.

Patriotism Post 9/11 And Contraction, Richard C. Crepeau
Patriotism Post 9/11 And Contraction, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Now back in the country among My Fellow Americans, but still wandering the highways and byways, I watch with some interest the spectacle of the baseball playoffs and the World Series in the new Post-9/11 World. I am struck by the intensity of the patriotic pageantry prior to each game. The often beautiful and moving singing of the National Anthem; the excessive displays of the red, white and blue; President Bush throwing out the first ball at the World Series; all conspire to mark these events as great moments of communal remembrance and/or celebration.
Aspects Of A Basic Training Course Comparatively Rated In Retrospective Evaluation By Girl Scout Leaders, Diana Jane Curtin
Aspects Of A Basic Training Course Comparatively Rated In Retrospective Evaluation By Girl Scout Leaders, Diana Jane Curtin
Master's Theses
One hundred and ninety-one volunteer Girl Scout leaders at a midsize northern California council participated in this study to determine the most and least valuable aspects of their new leader training, which was based on Kolb's experiential learning model (1984). The following were the top five aspects that leaders identified as most valuable: (a) trainer's knowledge; (b) using Safety-wise; (c) where to buy Girl Scout supplies; (d) Girl Scout Promise and Law; and (e) information on council events. The top five aspects which respondents identified as least valuable were: (a) troop government; (b) age-appropriate behavior; (c) performing ceremonies; (d) getting …

The Employer failed to place the Grievor on "leave for injury on duty" with full salary after she became ill, allegedly as a result of workplace conditions which aggravated her asthma. The Union requests the Grievor be paid her full salary and benefits for the sick leave period and that all sick leave, used by her for this purpose, be restored. The issues are whether the Grievor's asthma and/or its aggravation was an "injury in the performance of her duties" and , if so, whether that injury prevented the Grievor from working. The Employer agrees the Grievor was ill, but …

Cyclic Changes In Estradiol Regulate Synaptic Plasticity Through The Map Kinase Pathway, Ruifen Bi, Michael R. Foy, Rose-Marie Vouimba, Richard F. Thompson, Michel Baudry
Psychological Science Faculty Works
Hippocampal synaptic structure and function exhibit marked variations during the estrus cycle of female rats. Estradiol activates the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway in numerous cell types, and MAP kinase has been shown to play a critical role in the mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity. Here, we report that endogenous estrogen produces a tonic phosphorylation/activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 (ERK2)/MAP kinase throughout the female rat brain and an increase in tyrosine phosphorylation of NR2 subunits of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. Moreover, cyclic changes in estrogen levels during the estrus cycle of female rats are associated with corresponding changes in the levels …
