Search For Gluinos And Squarks Using Like-Sign Dileptons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S= 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present results of the first search for like-sign dilepton (e±e±, e± μ±, μ± μ±) events associated with multijets and large missing energy using 106 pb-1 of data in pp̅ collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV collected during 1992–1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we examine pair production of gluinos () and squarks () in a constrained framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At tanβ =2 and μ = -800 GeV/c2, we set 95% confidence …

Diets Of Juvenile Flatfishes Near Kodiak Island, Alaska, Brenda A. Holladay Dec 2001

Diets Of Juvenile Flatfishes Near Kodiak Island, Alaska, Brenda A. Holladay

Fisheries

Flathead sole, Pacific halibut, rock sole, and yellowfin sole were found co-existing near Kodiak Island as juveniles (<200 mm) during late summer. Dietary differences were attributed to fish species, size, and depth-sediment characteristics of their habitat. Two to three size classes were assigned within each species. Across all habitats, significant differences in dietary composition, stomach fullness, and diet diversity were found between size classes of different flatfish species. Within a single depth-sediment habitat, flatfishes of different species and size classes ate similar prey. Seven of nine species size classes had similar prey composition across multiple habitats. Significant differences in dietary composition across habitats were detected only for small Pacific halibut and small rock sole. The juvenile flatfishes near Kodiak were opportunistic feeders, and appeared to select habitat based on parameters other than the presence of specific prey taxa.

The Ecology Of Age-1 Copper Rockfish (Sebastes Caurinus) In Vegetated Habitats Of Sitka Sound, Alaska, Michael M. Byerly Dec 2001

The Ecology Of Age-1 Copper Rockfish (Sebastes Caurinus) In Vegetated Habitats Of Sitka Sound, Alaska, Michael M. Byerly

Fisheries

Variables that may indicate habitat quality were measured to assess the relative value of shallow subtidal vegetated habitats to age-1 copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus). All habitats studied appeared beneficial to fish with respect to the particular variable measured. Relative growth rate was significantly higher in kelp than in other habitats while energy content was highest in eelgrass. Though fish in eelgrass had lower growth rates, they were significantly larger, and had high densities. Mixed kelp and eelgrass habitat was suboptimal with respect to growth and energy content but also had high densities. Fish in mixed habitat moved the least both …

An Economic Appraisal Of Hole Cleaning Using Hydraulic Horsepower And Jet Impact Force, James Alfred Wright Dec 2001

An Economic Appraisal Of Hole Cleaning Using Hydraulic Horsepower And Jet Impact Force, James Alfred Wright

Engineering

In today's competitive business environment, reducing operating cost means dollars to the bottom line. One way that a drilling company can reduce operating cost is by optimizing energy use at the mud pumps. The mud pumps are massive pieces of equipment that are the backbone of the cutting's removal system. Optimizing the hydraulics program is one way to reduce mud pump operating cost. Big hydraulics play an important role in the drilling process. The beneficial action of the fluid's cleaning the bottom hole and the bit teeth, and carrying particles into the annulus is well-established. A variety of hydraulic optimization …

A Window To The Past: Macrofossil Remains From An 18,000 Year-Old Buried Surface, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Victoria Goetcheus Wolf Dec 2001

A Window To The Past: Macrofossil Remains From An 18,000 Year-Old Buried Surface, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Victoria Goetcheus Wolf

Geosciences

Macrofossil remains and pollen from an 18,000 year old buried surface from the northern Seward Peninsula enable a reconstruction of the full-glacial environment of an upland portion of the Bering Land Bridge. The buried surface represents a dry meadow and herb-rich tundra. Prostrate shrubs were rare on the landscape, but abundant locally. A large and diverse insect fauna populated the surface, preying on the plants and each other. Small mammals and their predators lived on the surface. Large mammals, such as caribou and bison, were present as well. The productivity of the surface was maintained by a continual influx of …

Despite High-Tech Entertainment Age, Books Still Enthrall Young Children, Deidra Jackson

University of Mississippi News

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- When classic stories such as "Charlotte's Web," "Goodnight Moon," and "The Snowy Day" are passed on from one generation to another, they continue to prove at least one concept unrivaled by CD burners, video games, and other high-tech toys: books stand the test of time. Whether bought as presents or borrowed or purchased to fill idle vacation time before and after the holidays, a traditional page-turner can still hold a child's interest and help establish firm reading habits, said Dr. Martha Chambless, coordinator of elementary education in The University of Mississippi (UM) School of Education's Curriculum and …

Visual Spatial Memory Is Enhanced In Female Rats (But Inhibited In Males) By Dietary Soy Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Timothy W. West, Lilyan Y. Tian, Lihong H. Bu, Daniel L. Simmons, Kenneth Setchell, Herman Adlercreutz Dec 2001

Visual Spatial Memory Is Enhanced In Female Rats (But Inhibited In Males) By Dietary Soy Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Timothy W. West, Lilyan Y. Tian, Lihong H. Bu, Daniel L. Simmons, Kenneth Setchell, Herman Adlercreutz

Faculty Publications

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined. Results: Female rats receiving lifelong exposure to a high-phytoestrogen containing diet (Phyto-600) acquired the maze faster than females fed a phytoestrogen-free diet (Phyto-free); in males the opposite diet effect was identified. In a separate experiment, at 80 days-of-age, animals fed the Phyto-600 …

Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diodes At 340 Nm Using Quaternary Alingan Multiple Quantum Wells, V. Adivarahan, A. Chitnis, J. P. Zhang, M. Shatalov, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur

Faculty Publications

An ultraviolet light-emitting diode with peak emission wavelength at 340 nm is reported. The active layers of the device were comprised of quaternary AlInGaN/AlInGaN multiple quantum wells, which were deposited over sapphire substrates using a pulsed atomic-layer epitaxy process that allows precise control of the composition and thickness. A comparative study of devices over sapphire and SiC substrates was done to determine the influence of the epilayer design on the performance parameters and the role of substrate absorption.

Laser Intensity Scaling Through Stimulated Scattering In Optical Fibers, Timothy H. Russell Dec 2001

Laser Intensity Scaling Through Stimulated Scattering In Optical Fibers, Timothy H. Russell

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of stimulated scattering on laser intensity in fiber optic waveguides is examined. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in long, multimode optical waveguides is found to generate a Stokes beam that propagates in the fiber LP01 mode. Additionally, the same process is found to combine multiple laser beams into a single spatially coherent source. Limitations in beam cleanup and combining are also investigated to identify ways to overcome them. The last portion of the dissertation theoretically examines suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in fibers to eliminate the restriction this imposes on the power of a fiber laser or amplifier. The …

Voting Rules In Insolvency Law: A Simple-Game Theoretic Approach, Matthew Braham, Frank Steffen Dec 2001

Voting Rules In Insolvency Law: A Simple-Game Theoretic Approach, Matthew Braham, Frank Steffen

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

A chief characteristic of modern insolvency law in the Canada, Germany, the UK, and the US is its provision for ‘workouts’ or ‘schemes of arrangement’ by which insolvent companies can attempt to rehabilitate the business. If reorganization is chosen, the debtor has to devise a plan of action which will be voted upon by claimants. The voting rules, however, differ in each jurisdiction to a greater or lesser extent and as yet have not been analysed in any rigorous manner. This paper provides an approach based upon the theory of simple games to analyse the rules in terms of the …
