The purpose of this thesis is to incorporate economics into lectures on environmental issues. This guide introduces several environmental issues, discusses the laws and regulations governing these issues, and discusses the economic instruments discussed in this guide are those that have been incorporated into environmental laws. These instruments allow environmental protection goals to be met at the least cost. Economic instruments are more flexible than command and control regulations and allow firms to choose the least cost method of reaching goals. Economic instruments also encourage advances in new technology. Students will be more receptive to the concept of using economics …

Ratio Of Isolated Photon Cross Sections In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 630 And 1800 Gev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in pp̅ collisions at √s = 630 GeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (ET) range from 7–49 GeV and have pseudorapidity∣η∣ < 2.5. This measurement is combined with the previous D0 result at √s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading-order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and the ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the ET range.

TRANSPORTATION. ALLOCATION OF SALES AND USE TAXES RAISED FROM SALEOR LEASE OF MOTOR VEHICLES. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Reallocates 30% of certain state revenues collected on motor vehicle sales or leases from the General Fund to the Traffic Congestion Relief and Safe School Bus Trust Fund. Allocates money for transportation programs including: highway expansion, specific freeway interchange improvements, mass transit improvements, purchasing buses, and expanding light and commuter rail. Provides funds for environmental enhancement, transportation impact mitigation programs, and transportation safety programs. Calving Ground Habitat Selection: Teshekpuk Lake And Western Arctic Caribou Herds, Rebecca A. Kelleyhouse

Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) exhibit relative fidelity to calving grounds each spring. The Western Arctic Herd (WAH) and Teshekpuk Lake Herd (TLH) calve separately on Alaska's north slope, each selective of the dominant vegetation type. The WAH consumed mostly sedges, though the TLH diet varied. Despite differing snow conditions between the calving grounds, both herds were selective of the lowest snow cover class. Rugged terrain was avoided by both herds. While the TLH selected a high rate of increase in biomass, the WAH selected high biomass at calving and at peak lactation. Joanne D’Arcangelo was born on April 20, 1954 in Haverill, Massachusetts. She attended state college in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, then received a teaching assistantship at the University of Maine at Orono and concurrently earned her master’s degree in English. She taught English at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, and worked on the town committee with Dick Davies, a local legislator. She also worked as a press aide to Jim Tierney, as a constituent case worker for House Speaker John Martin during early 1980s, and for Jerry Conley. She assisted with the Carter and Mondale presidential campaigns. D’Arcangelo was involved …

To facilitate detection of glycoprotein K (gK) specified by herpes simplex virus, a 12-amino-acid epitope tag was inserted within gK domain III. Recombinant virus gKprotC-DIII, expressing the tagged gK, was isolated. This virus formed wild-type plaques and replicated as efficiently as the wild-type KOS virus in Vero cells. Anti-protein C MAb detected high-mannose and Golgi complex-dependent glycosylated gK within cells as well as on purified virions. The gK-null virus ΔgK (gK-/-) entered Vero cells substantially more slowly than the wild-type KOS (gK+/+), while ΔgK virus grown in complementing VK302 cells (gK-/+) entered with entry kinetics similar to those of the …

Spatial Distribution And Temporal Variability Of Lithogenic Particles In First-Year Sea Ice And Conditions Responsible For Particle Entrainment, Aaron Patrick Stierle

Processes controlling the spatial and temporal variability of sea ice sediment inclusions in the shallow-marine environment of Elson Lagoon near Barrow, Alaska, were studied by modeling the potential for sediment resuspension during the 1998, 1999 and 2000 fall freeze-up events and examining sea ice cores from the post-freeze-up ice cover. Resuspension potential was controlled spatially by the local bathymetry and interannually by wind speed and fetch. Increases in resuspension potential corresponded to greater sea ice sediment content. Sediments occurred exclusively as aggregates confined to brine inclusions in the ice and exhibited a tendency toward a clustered spatial distribution, because of …

A Window To The Past: Macrofossil Remains From An 18,000 Year-Old Buried Surface, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Victoria Goetcheus Wolf

Macrofossil remains and pollen from an 18,000 year old buried surface from the northern Seward Peninsula enable a reconstruction of the full-glacial environment of an upland portion of the Bering Land Bridge. The buried surface represents a dry meadow and herb-rich tundra. Prostrate shrubs were rare on the landscape, but abundant locally. A large and diverse insect fauna populated the surface, preying on the plants and each other. Small mammals and their predators lived on the surface. Large mammals, such as caribou and bison, were present as well. The productivity of the surface was maintained by a continual influx of …

Since the Alaskan airshed north of the Alaska Range receives a substantial portion of its anthropogenic aerosol and gaseous pollutants through long-range transport, Alaskan air quality is influenced to an unusually high degree by the political and economic events of other countries. An understanding of the political and economic forces at work in the various circumpolar nations is key to an understanding of the observed decline in Arctic haze, the present state of Arctic air pollution, and likely future developments. This thesis examines Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) for an endangered species across geographically nested samples using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The samples range from the boroughs that contain critical habitat for the Steller sea lion to the state that contains these boroughs to the entire United States. Depending on the assumptions of the model, WTP varies tremendously from sample to sample. When WTP is unrestricted to the non-negative region, mean WTP for the United States is the highest and it is the lowest for the boroughs. Understanding The Lived Experience Of Racist Hate Speech On American University Campuses, Jonathan Andre Matusitz

This research employs narrative methodology in order to understand the lived experience of students who have experienced racist racist hate speech on American university campuses. Thematic analysis of in-depth, conversational interview capta (Kvale, 1996) was used to find commonalities in co-researchers' experiences. The literature review includes a contextual and historical section on racism, and a detailed, standard definition of racist hate speech. Emergent themes from these narrative interviews were found in regard to victims' experiences of racist hate speech on American university campuses. Those themes are discussed in the order of the co-researchers' experience: (1) indignation and anger, (2) stereotyping, …

We present results of the first search for like-sign dilepton (e±e±, e± μ±, μ± μ±) events associated with multijets and large missing energy using 106 pb-1 of data in pp̅ collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV collected during 1992–1995 by the CDF experiment. Finding no events that pass our selection, we examine pair production of gluinos (g̃) and squarks (q̃) in a constrained framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model.
