Hanford Radioactivity In Salmon Spawning Grounds, Government Accountability Project, Norm Buske Dec 2001

Hanford Radioactivity In Salmon Spawning Grounds, Government Accountability Project, Norm Buske

Government Accountability Project (GAP)

The public has expressed concern that radioactivity from Hanford’s wartime nuclear weapons production might contaminate salmon spawning grounds in the Columbia River. Salmon hatchlings (alevin) grow among the gravels in the riverbed, where they are susceptible to environmental stresses that include toxic chemicals and radioactivity. Some people worry that radioactivity from Hanford will damage the alevin genetically and slowly reduce the strength of the salmon stock.

In 2001, The RadioActivist Campaign (TRAC) found a radioactive fingerprint (europium-152) of old Hanford nuclear waste in 60% of sediments lying under the Hanford Reach and in 7 of 10 major salmon spawning areas. …

Measuring The Speed Of Sound Of Quintessence, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Joel K. Erickson, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt, V. Mukhanov Dec 2001

Measuring The Speed Of Sound Of Quintessence, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Joel K. Erickson, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt, V. Mukhanov

Physics - All Scholarship

Quintessence, a time-varying energy component that may account for the accelerated expansion of the universe, can be characterized by its equation of state and sound speed. In this paper, we show that if the quintessence density is at least one percent of the critical density at the surface of last scattering the cosmic microwave background anisotropy can distinguish between models whose sound speed is near the speed of light versus near zero, which could be useful in distinguishing competing candidates for dark energy.

A Study To Determine The Impact Of The Picture Exchange Communication System On Challenging Behaviors In Adults With Autism, Stephanie M. Belsanti Dec 2001

A Study To Determine The Impact Of The Picture Exchange Communication System On Challenging Behaviors In Adults With Autism, Stephanie M. Belsanti

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if an increase in communication skills, over an 80 week period, in adults with autism would decrease challenging behaviors. The sample in this study consisted of 3 adult males diagnosed with autism and no verbal communication skills. The participants were between the ages of 24 and 27 and attended a data treatment center, which was used as the training environment in the current study.

The Picture Exchange Communication System was the primary treatment for three adults who have no verbal language and are diagnosed with autism. Treatment sessions were conducted throughout the …

Magnetic Field Effects On Neutron Diffraction In The Antiferromagnetic Phase Of Upt3, Juana Moreno, J. A. Sauls Dec 2001

Magnetic Field Effects On Neutron Diffraction In The Antiferromagnetic Phase Of Upt3, Juana Moreno, J. A. Sauls

Faculty Publications

We discuss possible magnetic structures in UPt3 based on our analysis of elastic neutron-scattering experiments in high magnetic fields at temperatures T < TN. The existing experimental data are compatible with a true antiferromagnetic order displaying a single-q antiferromagnetic structure with three independent domains. For modest in-plane spin-orbit interactions, the Zeeman coupling between the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the magnetic field induces a rotation of the magnetic moments, but not an adjustment of the propagation vector of the magnetic order. A triple-q magnetic structure is also consistent with neutron experiments, but in general leads to a nonuniform magnetization in the crystal. New experiments involving higher fields and polarized neutrons could decide between these structures. © 2000 The American Physical Society.
