Redshifts And Luminosities For 112 Gamma-Ray Bursts, Bradley E. Schaefer, Ming Deng, David L. Band Dec 2001

Redshifts And Luminosities For 112 Gamma-Ray Bursts, Bradley E. Schaefer, Ming Deng, David L. Band

Faculty Publications

Two different luminosity indicators have recently been proposed for gamma-ray bursts that use gamma-ray observations alone. They relate the burst luminosity (L) with the time lag between peaks in hard and soft energies (τlag) and the spikiness or variability of the burst's light curve (V). These relations are currently justified and calibrated with only six or seven bursts with known redshifts. We have examined BATSE data for τlag and V for 112 bursts. (1) A strong correlation between τlag and V exists, and it is exactly as predicted from the two proposed relations. This is proof that both luminosity indicators …

Surveys Of Calling Amphibians In North Dakota, Douglas H. Johnson, Ronald D. Batie Dec 2001

Surveys Of Calling Amphibians In North Dakota, Douglas H. Johnson, Ronald D. Batie

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Amphibians have received increased attention in recent years from the scientific community and general public alike. Many populations throughout the world have declined or have been extirpated, often without an apparent cause. Concern about the status of amphibians has translated into a growing interest in systematic and statistically sound monitoring programs. Several extensive efforts to monitor populations of calling amphibians are in place, and more are under development. Necessary for the design of appropriate surveys is an understanding of the behavior, especially vocalization, of the various species, and how it varies by geographic location and environmental conditions. In 1995 we …

Horses Damp The Spring In Their Step, Alan M. Wilson, M. Polly Mcguigan, Anne Su, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Dec 2001

Horses Damp The Spring In Their Step, Alan M. Wilson, M. Polly Mcguigan, Anne Su, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The muscular work of galloping in horses is halved by storing and returning elastic strain energy in spring-like muscle–tendon units1, 2.These make the legs act like a child's pogo stick that is tuned to stretch and recoil at 2.5 strides per second. This mechanism is optimized by unique musculoskeletal adaptations: the digital flexor muscles have extremely short fibres and significant passive properties, whereas the tendons are very long and span several joints3, 4. Length change occurs by a stretching of the spring-like digital flexor tendons rather than through energetically expensive length changes in the muscle5 …

Employee Ownership After Privatization: Governance Institutions And Firm Performance In Romania, John S. Earle, ÁLmos Telegdy Dec 2001

Employee Ownership After Privatization: Governance Institutions And Firm Performance In Romania, John S. Earle, ÁLmos Telegdy

Reports

This paper studies the governance institutions and performance consequences of privatization through management-employee buyout (MEBO) in Romania. Detailed firm-level survey data are used to analyze ownership rights practices concerning voting, dividend payment, and sales of shares, and to study the continued role of the state through restructuring restrictions in the privatization contracts, difficulties in installment payment, and possible renationalization of shares. Comprehensive privatization and registry data are used to estimate the productivity performance of industrial MEBOs, compared with mass transfers to dispersed individuals, sales to domestic and foreign blockholders, and continued ownership by the state. We find that the ownership …

Two-Dimensional Fast Evanescent Wave Algorithm, W. C. Chew, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang, S. Velamparambil

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new fast evanescent wave algorithm (FEWA) is introduced in the two-dimensional (2-D) case. It expands the Green's function into propagating waves and directional evanescent waves. Applying the evanescent wave correction technique, a procedure similar to the traditional MLFMA can be expedited. No buffer region is necessary anymore, and fewer translators are needed. Numerical examples are given to show the features of this method.
