The Development Of The Teacher As A Professional In An Alternative Teacher Education Program, Joseph T. Pascarelli, Blaine C. Ackley, Gerald M. Balaban

Recruitment and retention strategies are a growing concern for Catholic educational leaders. This article offers a glimpse into the dynamics of a leading teacher recruitment effort, the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) sponsored by the University of Notre Dame. After surveying the first two cohorts who taught in Catholic schools through ACE, the authors uncover significant and meaningful components of this alternative teacher preparation program with a view to challenging traditional teacher education efforts and preservice requirements.

This study analyzes a range of professional beliefs held by a sample of incoming teacher candidates in the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), a service-learning teacher education program at the University of Notre Dame, and a sample of preservice teachers in a traditional teacher education program at a state university. The key dependent variables in this study are preservice teachers’ sense of professional responsibility and self-efficacy beliefs regarding the intellectual and moral aspects of their teaching. Findings indicate that ACE teacher candidates hold a greater sense of responsibility for helping disadvantaged students academically and for fostering all children’s moral growth …

Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff

How does one talk about moral thought and moral action as a religious naturalist? We explore this question by considering two human capacities: the capacity for mindfulness, and the capacity for virtue. We suggest that mindfulness is deeply enhanced by an understanding of the scientific worldview and that the four cardinal virtues—courage, fairmindedness, humaneness, and reverence—are rendered coherent by mindful reflection. We focus on the concept of mindful reverence and propose that the mindful reverence elicited by the evolutionary narrative is at the heart of religious naturalism. Religious education, we suggest, entails the cultivation of mindful virtue, in ourselves and …

Pastors hear the same story too many times. The faces are different, and the circumstances have new twists, but the story of another marriage breaking apart is too familiar. The consequences are always the same, a ripping and tearing apart of a family. There are wounded hearts, crushed self-esteem, and plenty of blame to go around. The frustration is that those people breaking up are Christians. Often they are a part of the church, and in many cases the church or their faith didn't seem to be a part of the equation for making a decision to divorce. Many do …

Thoughts. on appropriate conceptualization, measurement and accurate characterization of determinants of poverty has a long history. From analytical perspective, thinking about poverty can be traced back at least to the codification of poor laws in medieval England, through to the pioneering empirical studies, at the tum of the century, by Booth in London and by Rowntree in York. Rowntree's study, published in 1901, was the first to develop a poverty standard for individual families, based on estimates of nutritional and other requirements. It is well known that the adaptive algorithm is simple and easy to program but the results are not fully competitive with other nonlinear methods such as free knot spline approximation. We modify the algorithm to take full advantages of nonlinear approximation. The new algorithms have the same approximation order as other nonlinear methods, which is proved by characterizing their approximation spaces. One of our algorithms is implemented on the computer, with numerical results illustrated by figures and tables.

"Black Behind The Ears" — And Up Front Too? Dominicans In The Black Mosaic, Ginetta Candelario Dr

This article considers the formation and representation of Washington, D.C.'s Dominican community in the Anacostia Museum's 1994 -1995 exhibit, Black Mosaic: Community, Race and Ethnicity Among Black Immigrants in D.C. The exhibit successfully pointed to the extensive historical presence of African Diaspora peoples in Latin America and explored the development of subsequent Diaspora from those communities into Washington, D.C. The case of Dominican immigrants to D.C., however, illustrates the continued privileging of a U.S.- or Anglo-centric ideation of African-American history and identity. I argue that a more accurate and politically useful formulation would call for an understanding that the African …

OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of transfusion associated infection for human immunodeficiency virus and Hepatitis C virus using nucleic acid testing. METHODS: During March 1998, 400 donor blood samples from the Saudi population that were negative by serology were further tested for human immunodeficiency virus 1 and 2 and Hepatitis C virus using nucleic acid testing. RESULTS: A total of 400 were tested by nucleic acid testing, 381 of these were negative, 4 were indeterminate but were found to be negative on repeat testing and one seronegative sample was found to be positive for Hepatitis C virus. OBJECTIVE: The aim and purpose of this study was to find out the protective effect of garlic oil in liver toxicity induced by acetaminophen overdose and the comparison of its effect with N-acetylcysteine in albino male mice (18-22g). METHODS: This study was undertaken during the period from January 1999 through to August 2000, at the School of Pharmacy, Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences, Ahwaz, Iran. This article posits a framework that shows how market-based assets and capabilities are leveraged via market-facing or core business processes to deliver superior customer value and competitive advantages. These value elements and competitive advantages can be leveraged to result in superior corporate performance and shareholder value and reinvested to nurture market-based assets and capabilities in the future. The article also illustrates how resource-based view (RBV) and marketing considerations in the context of generating and sustaining customer value can refine and extend each other's traditional frames of analysis. The description of Nigeria as a paradox by the World Bank (1996) bas continued to be confirmed by events and official statistics in the country. The paradox is - that the poverty level in Nigeria contradicts the country's immense wealth. Among other things, the country is enormously endowed with human, agricultural, petroleum, gas, and large untapped solid mineral resources. Particularly worrisome is that the country earned over USS300 billion from one resource - petroleum - during the last three decades of the twentieth century.
