Delayed Reproduction Of Translocated Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, James R. Mccormick, Richard N. Conner, Daniel Saenz, Brent Burt

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Twelve pairs of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers were translocated to the Angelina National Forest from October to December 1998. Five breeding pairs produced eggs or nestlings in the first breeding season, but clutch initiation was delayed. Causes may include unfamiliar habitat, lack of experience, delayed bonding, or age-related factors.

The goal of this study was to investigate the subtle interrelationships between the insurance claim’s data and clinic performance of medical institutes. Because the medical claims data increase drastically, the review efforts and processes become rather complex and inefficient. The physicians of review committee should have an enterprise view of the claims.We create the performance indicators from consistent data & meta data established from the clinic performance of medical institutes. We adopted 16 outpatient review indicators. We collected rehabilitation claims in middle branch of NHIB since July 1996 till Feb 1997. The prediction model created using both the neural network …

Multiple sclerosis is a heterogeneous disease entity, and also the most common disabling neurological disorder of people in middle life in USA. The prevalence of multiple sclerosis in Asia is lower than that in Western countries of similar latitude. Besides, there are some different features, clinically as well as pathologically, between this disease in Asia and in Western countries. We collected 27 cases diagnosed as clinically definite MS at NTUH between 1990-2000, whose clinical presentations are restricted to optic nerves and spinal cord. We reported a 72 y/o male who had past history of old L1 compression fracture for 1 year. He suffered from falling down accidentally and was operated under impression of L1 burst fracture with cauda equina syndrome. He could ambulate with walker, but persistent back pain was still complained. Two months after operation, he became paralyzed rapidly in 2 days. Neurological examinations showed decreased motor strength of bilateral lower extremities to grade 0-1/5, sensory deficit below T10 dermatome and bilateral extensor plantar response. X-ray film showed an osteoblastic lesion in T9 vertebra body. Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) of thoracic spine …

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a condition affecting nearly 4% of the elderly population. It has a potential for producing a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal pain and back pain. It is rare that abdominal aortic aneurysm presents with paraplegia. From literature review there have been very few reports of patients who sustained lumbar disc herniation along with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. We reported a 68-year-old man with a previously undiagnosed abdominal aortic aneurysm presenting with acute paraplegia. This patient had a history of lumbar disc herniation and was receiving pelvic traction. He survived after operation, but some long-term sequelae, …

Etiology And Rehabilitation Effect Of Stroke In Child: A Casereport, Li-Chen Tung, Kwok-Tak Yeung, Chun-Hou Wang, Wen-I Liang, Liu-Ing Bih

The incidence of strokes in childhood is 2.5/100,000. Of these, occlusive stroke accounts for 57 to 85 percent, and hemorrhagic stroke accounts for 15 to 51 percent. Occlusive stroke is primarily caused by congenital heart defects, and the principal symptom is acute hemiplegia. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused mostly by abnormalities of blood vessels, and is characterized by headache and loss of consciousness. Compared to adults, children have better collateral circulation and incompletely developed brains. The clinical and recovery courses those in children are different from those of adults. The prognosis and the incidence of stroke recurrence are largely determined by …

In the fall of 2000 the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) began a planning study on behalf of the Kentucky Transporta tion Cabinet (KYTC) to investigate the bicycle and pedestrian access on KY 1968 (Parkers Mill Road) from Man O War Boulevard to New Circle Road in Lexington. The 1-mile section has a rural design with two 9-foot lanes, limited 3-foot earth shoulders and adjacent objects in the clear zone making travel on this road uncomfortable for pedestrians and cyclists. Cost savings can be achieved in a wide range of applications by replacing the current procedure for hydrostatic recertification of high-pressure composite gas cylinders with acoustic emission (AE) nondestructive testing. Advantages of AE recertification over the current hydrostatic method include: (1) no water contamination, since pressurization of the cylinders is done with air as opposed to water; (2) the risk of damage is decreased since the test pressure is reduced from 166% of design pressure to 110% of operating pressure; (3) the ability of acoustic emission to detect and locate flaws increases safety; and (4) the in-situ method will reduce …

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Interpretive methodology lies at the core of the Supreme Court's persistent modern debate about statutory interpretation. Supreme Court Justices have applied two fundamentally different methods of interpretation. One is the formalist method, which seeks to promote rule-of-law values and purports to constrain the discretion of judges by limiting them to the autonomous legal text. The second is the nonformalist or antiformalist method, which may consider the legislature's intent or purpose or other evidence as context for understanding the statutory text. The debate within the current Court is commonly framed and advanced by Justices Stevens and Scalia. Justice Scalia is now …
