Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Co/Srtio3/Co Tunnel Junctions, Ivan I. Oleinik, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, David G. Pettifor

First-principles density-functional calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of Co/SrTiO3 /Co (001) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ’s) are performed. Different interface terminations are considered and the most stable structure with the TiO2 termination is identified based on energetics of adhesion. The calculated electronic structure of the TiO2-terminated MTJ shows an exchange coupling between the interface Co and Ti atoms mediated by oxygen. This coupling induces a magnetic moment of 0.25 µB on the interface Ti atom, which is aligned antiparallel to the magnetic moment of the Co layer. We argue that this might cause an …

The 'Lack Of Separation' Revisited: Small Business Owners And Risk, Susan Coleman, Richard Cohn
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
The close link between the personal financial affairs of a small business owner and his or her firm has been noted in prior research. This article compares attitudes toward risk on the part of small business owners (SBOs) and non-small business owners (NSBOs). In addition, it compares the personal balance sheets of SBOs to those of NSBOs to determine if SBOs hold a higher level of risky assets. Results reveal that small business owners express a greater willingness to accept risk and hold a higher level of risky assets in their personal portfolios. An Empirical Examination Of Sba Guaranteed Loans: Rates, Collateral, Agency Costs, And The Time To Obtain The Loan, James C. Brau, Jerome S. Osteryoung
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
We empirically examine a sample of over 350 entrepreneurial firms that successfully receive an SBA guaranteed loan. The first portion of the paper contains descriptive statistics that lend anecdotal evidence concerning the organization type of borrowers, the incidence of collateral, the reasons for choosing the financial institution in which the SBA loan is secured, the main purpose for the SBA loan, and alternative actions that would have been undertaken had the SBA guaranteed loan not been obtained. The second portion of the paper poses theoretical predictions and tests them via multivariate models. Issues that are considered include the number of …

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
The nature and role of early stage equity financing in the development of emerging entrepreneurial ventures in the software industry is examined. To provide an understanding of the relationship between the suppliers of capital and the ventures they bankroll, issues concerning equity positions and holding periods are addressed. Given the unique position of private investors in the early stage equity market, particular attention is given to the characteristics of these investors and the investor characteristics germane to the software industry. Results for the software sector are compared with technology-based companies in an attempt to uncover any discernable differences between the …

The hybrid peptide–polyketide backbone of bleomycin (BLM) is assembled by the BLM megasynthetase that consists of both nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) and polyketide synthase (PKS) modules. BlmIX/BlmVIII/BlmVII constitute a natural hybrid NRPS/PKS/NRPS system, serving as a model for both hybrid NRPS/PKS and PKS/NRPS systems. Sequence analysis and functional comparison of domains and modules of BlmIX/BlmVIII/BlmVII with those of nonhybrid NRPS and PKS systems suggest that (1) the same catalytic sites appear to be conserved in both hybrid NRPS–PKS and nonhybrid NRPS or PKS systems, with the exception of the KS domains in the hybrid NRPS/PKS systems that are unique; (2) …

Although the national media has given increased attention to the venture capital process, misconceptions continue to proliferate. One often hears about the incredible capital gains of IPO share prices. This paper refutes the myth that investors demand very high rates of return to compensate for the risks involved in financing ventures. The paper investigates actual performance of 3,063 Initial Public Offerings of companies that were backed by venture capital from 1968 until 1998 stratified by current actively and inactively traded companies and by stages of financing. The importance of an accurate sales forecast to financial management in general is well documented. Although large firms' forecasting practices as they relate to financial management have been surveyed, this is the first such study on small (manufacturing) firms. Surprisingly, the two groups are highly similar with respect to accuracy desired accuracy achieved, the uses of the sales forecast, and in the importance of the sales forecast. However, large and small firms do differ significantly in methods, perceived sophistication of methods, and in the commitment of resources to the sales forecasting effort.

The Impact Of Bank Structure On Small Business And Small Farm Lending, Steven G. Craig, Polly T. Hardee

This paper empirically explores the impact of bank size, holding company affiliation and the degree of branching on small business and farm lending through a conceptual analysis encompassing private information asymmetries inherent in these bank dependent borrowers. The study expands the literature by removing the influence of capital constraints in bank dependent lending through comparing real estate secured to non real estate loans in a reduced form model. Furthermore, it encompasses an allocation analysis over bank dependent loans, its large loan counterpart and other assets. Venture Financing And Role Of Certification: A Theoretical Perspective, Rassoul Yazdipour

This paper attempts to extend the Certification Paradigm--mainly used in the literature as an explanation for IPO underpricings--to provide guidelines to entrepreneurs in their efforts to secure funding for new ventures. After extending the model to cases of pre-venture-capital start-up firms, along with the practical implications that would follow, efforts are made to derive some testable hypotheses for further research on the topic.

Where Do We Stand On Closely-Held Firm Valuation?, William P. Dukes

This paper contains a review of issues pertaining to the valuation of privately held businesses, noting significant inconsistencies in the rationale and approaches taken in the valuation process. In addition to suggesting that appraisers stay with the "tried and true" rather than testing the obsolete, it may be desirable for an experiment to be conducted with a "friends of the Tax Court" idea, in which a few select extremely well qualified appraisers offer assistance in the Tax Court's deliberations on valuation issues.
