Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Nature journaling is hands-on learning at its best. The students are not punching keyboards, responding to questions in a book, or answering questions made up by someone else. They are outdoors, looking at grasses, weeds, ants, earthworms, blue jays, sugar maples, poison ivy, and seeing for themselves connections they never noticed before. The proof of their observation is their own journal page.

According to military figures, most mine incidents occurred during the latter part of the 1960s and early 1970s, when the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict spilled into Jordan. Incidents rose again during the early part of the 1990s due to heavy rains and floods that shifted landmines from their originally marked and mapped fields into unrecorded areas.

Efficacy Of Sucker Control Method And Effect Of Topping Height On Axillary Bud Growth In Dark Fire-Cured Tobacco, Leslie Thompson

The removal of terminal buds (topping) and sucker control are two practices that have an impact on yield and quality of dark tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Topping breaks apical dominance and encourages the growth of axillary buds (suckers). Following topping, growth regulator chemicals known as suckercides are commonly used to prevent axillary bud growth. Research has demonstrated that topping time, height, and sucker control method influence the quality and yield of the final product. Delaying topping past a critical developmental stage has been shown to reduce leaf yield. Topping height varies among geographical regions with most dark tobacco producers topping …

Tuberculosis is the leading cause of infectious disease in Nepal. An estimated 60% of the adult population aged between 15-45 years is infected with tuberculosis, and 45% of the total population is infected. Ten percent of people infected with TB progress to active disease. To combat tuberculosis, Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) was adopted in Nepal in 1996. DOT was administered at four national demonstration sites in 1996 and expanded over time so that 56% of the population to date have been covered by DOT. Field experiments were established in 2000 and 2001 at the Agricultural Research and Education Complex in Bowling Green, Kentucky to evaluate herbicide efficacy on annual morningglory (Ipomoea spp.) species and other weeds. A randomized complete block design was utilized in each study with each treatment being replicated three times. Plots consisted of four 76 cm rows, 9.1 m in length. The two center rows of each plot were treated, with the outside rows of each plot serving as a weedy check. Crop response, weed control, and grain yield data were collected. The widespread occurrence of psychiatric comorbidity among patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has been well documented. However, there is a paucity of studies examining the impact comorbid disorders have on the clinical course of GAD. In this study, 179 patients with GAD at intake, 12 patients with a past history of GAD, and 109 patients who subsequently onset a first episode of GAD during the course of follow-up were followed for 8 years in this naturalistic, prospective study of anxiety disorders. Results indicate that comorbid anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders are very common with GAD and increased during …

The rock-dwelling cichlids (mbuna) of Lake Malawi have undergone an explosive evolution, giving rise to an assemblage of 300-500 species within the last one million years. Most widespread mbuna 'species' are characterized by the presence of local endemic populations, differing primarily in coloration and often of uncertain taxonomic rank. The recency and rapidity of speciation within the mbuna have led to difficulties in reconstructing an accurate species-level phylogeny, in turn limiting our ability to elucidate the evolutionary dynamics associated with divergence of coloration and other characters. This thesis represents the first known study to investigate the equivalency of paper vs. electronic survey data collection formats in an upward feedback application. Findings are similar to recent research utilizing employee opinion survey data. Format explained less than 1% of variance in managers' total scores over that of ratee and rater demographic variables.

This study of Dadié's poetry, focusing on Hommes de tous les continents, uncovers the traditional and biblical roots of this cross-cultural writing. The study of imagery, symbols and rhythm highlights the writer's exploration of time and space, his perception of the poet's role as a soldier and inspired guide, and reveals his poetry as a militant powerfully word pointing towards a future yet unborn.
