The Study Of Biological Membranes Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Brandy L. Perkins

In the past research, when a carbon nanotube enhanced cantilever was probed along a living cell membrane, carboxylic acid groups located at the tips of the nanotubes would interact with various groups on the surface of the membrane causing it to rupture. A method to re-derivatize the tips of the nanotubes through covalent bonding by allowing the amine groups to attach to the carboxylic acid groups was developed. This chemical change perhaps will allow one to probe a cell surface without rupturing it. There are over seventy genotypes of Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs), some cause benign warts and others are risk factors for the development of carcinomas of the respiratory and genital tract. Research has proven that the high risk HPV 16 E5 protein in the presence of epidermal growth (EGF) acts as a survival factor resulting in elevated levels of activated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and activated levels of ERK 1/2 and Akt, two signaling molecules downstream of EGFR, in UVP irradiated human foreskin keratinocytes (HFKs). This leads to the protection of the cells from UVB induced apoptosis. The purpose of this …

Over the past several decades, health and environmental risks of pollution have become apparent. As a result, environmental regulations have been created to remediate areas where environmental contamination is tremendous, therefore, a low-cost alternative to the already existing technology is needed. Using plants to eliminate hazardous organic compounds from contaminated soils has been proposed as an efficient means of remediation. Phytoremediation is the direct use of living green plants to remediate soil, sludge, sediments and ground water contaminated with toxic compounds. The four processes of phytoremediation are rhizofiltration, phytoextraction, phytostabilization and phytodegradation. As they 'grow and develop, plants will use …

Detection Of Progressive Deterioration In Early Onset Schizophrenia With A New Statistical Method, Ying Qing Chen, Mei-Cheng Wang, William W. Eaton
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Much controversy exists over whether the course of schizophrenia, as defined by the lengths of repeated community tenures, is progressively ameliorating or deteriorating. This article employs a new statistical method proposed by Wang and Chen (2000) to analyze the Denmark registry data in Eaton, et al (1992). The new statistical method correctly handles the bias caused by induced informative censoring, which is an interaction of the heterogeneity of schizophrenia patients and long-term follow-up. The analysis shows a progressive deterioration pattern in terms of community tenures for the full registry cohort, rather than a progressive amelioration pattern as reported for a …

The Devolution Of Managed Care Contractor Duties: Analysis And Implications For Public Policy In Managed Behavioral Health Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Anne R. Markus, Joel B. Teitelbaum
Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs
This Issue Brief analyzes the devolution of the legal duties assumed by managed care organizations (MCOs) in their contracts with group purchasers. Specifically, this brief examines the delegation of MCO contractual duties related to member care and services to individual network providers by comparing the language used in master contracts between purchasers and MCOs with the language contained in agreements with network health care providers who serve members covered under the master contract.
