Relational And Overt Aggression In Middle Childhood: A Comparison Of Hypothetical And Reported Conflicts, Jillian M. Denoma '01

Honors Projects

Following recent research patterns in childhood conflict, the current study examined individual differences and gender trends in conflict resolution styles. Relational and overt aggression were investigated in 31 fourth and fifth graders by use of a multi-method evaluation that included peer and teacher ratings, and hypothetical conflict vignettes and reported conflicts. It was hypothesized that girls would use relational aggression more often than boys and that boys would display overt aggression more often than girls. Teacher and peer measures were convergent in corresponding ratings of overt aggression, but no convergence was apparent for either overt or relational aggression between hypothetical …

Listening For A Change: The Courts And Oral Tradition, John Borrows

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Aboriginal oral history is a valuable source of information about a people's past. It can constitute important evidence as proof of prior events, and/or it can shed light on meanings groups give to their past. Despite its value, however, oral tradition presents particular challenges of admissibility and interpretation because of its unique source and transmission. This article outlines and discuses these challenges and suggests various approaches to better understand the insights contained within aboriginal history.

New Modes Of Assessment, Greg Sergienko Jan 2001

New Modes Of Assessment, Greg Sergienko

San Diego Law Review

are extremely burdensome to grade. The purpose of this Article is to call attention to a variety of alternatives to this traditional format that are more accurate and less burdensome than traditional essay exams.2 Increasing accuracy makes it

possible to determine whether the instruction has been effective, allowing the instructor to address areas of weakness before the course ends and to improve future classes. Decreasing the burden of assessment of student learning allows for faster feedback, which is more effective.' Faster assessment also makes possible frequent assessment, and frequent assessment provides students with the information they need to improve, promoting …

The Influence Of Family Dynamics On Women’S Pay Expectations, Kelly Kristine Fredericks Jan 2001

The Influence Of Family Dynamics On Women’S Pay Expectations, Kelly Kristine Fredericks

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Several reasons for why the gender wage gap exists have been proposed. These include differences in education between men and women, differences in career paths, and bias against women in the workplace. Another potential explanation is that women simply expect to earn less than men do and they enter a job with lower pay expectations than men. This lower pay expectation may result in lower actual pay for women because they will be less likely to engage in pay seeking behaviors, such as asking for higher pay at hire and aggressively seeking raises than men. The present study was done …

Typographic Legibility For Retinitis Pigmentosa Readers, Carla Benedetti Jan 2001

Typographic Legibility For Retinitis Pigmentosa Readers, Carla Benedetti

Masters

Although numerous papers have been written on the subject of legibility, there appears to be a lack of research into the relationship between printed matter and visual impairment in this context. The research aim of this thesis is to conduct a comprehensive study on the reading performance of those suffering from a particular impairment, namely Retinitis Pigmentosa and to identify typographic considerations that would improve this performance. The work confirms the importance of specially designed material and the need for specific guidelines to ensure optimum legibility for particular eye deficiencies.

Smart Growth And Other Infirmities Of Land Use Controls, Bernard H. Siegan Jan 2001

Smart Growth And Other Infirmities Of Land Use Controls, Bernard H. Siegan

San Diego Law Review

The great lesson of our time is that the forces of production, conservation, and creativity exist principally in the marketplace and not in government. To be sure, private entrepreneurs act largely in their own self-interest, but probably no more so than government officials, and their endeavors in the economic area are much more beneficial to the public.

The Trusteeship Of Legal Rulemaking, Edward S. Adams, Richard A. Saliterman Jan 2001

The Trusteeship Of Legal Rulemaking, Edward S. Adams, Richard A. Saliterman

Articles

Professor Robert D. Putnam's work is, in many respects, the contemporary companion to Democracy in America.' It comprehensively surveys and tests common presumptions held about our democracy with apparently very reliable quantitative data. Until recently, a work of this depth and breadth has been unavailable. Putnam sets forth a well supported thesis suggesting that even though American financial capital may be at a high, its "social capital" has perhaps reached a record low, or at least a level similar to the social, economic, and legal bottleneck of a century ago.' His use of empirical and combined data, however, probes into …

How To Plot Love On An Indifference Curve, Brian H. Bix

Articles

This review of June Carbone's book, "From Partners to Parents: The Second Revolution in Family Law" (Columbia U. Pr., 2000), considers not only the title theme-- how societal norms regarding the family and legal regulation of the family have changed their focus from the way adult partners treat one another to parents' rights and duties regarding their children-- but also additional themes raised by the book's discussions. In particular, the Review emphasizes the way in which Family Law writers have resisted or adapted economic approaches to law, and the problem of legal reform in Family Law at a time of …

Preferred Leadership Of Ncaa Division I And Ii Intercollegiate Student-Athletes, Joel W. Beam Jan 2001

Preferred Leadership Of Ncaa Division I And Ii Intercollegiate Student-Athletes, Joel W. Beam

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of student-athletes' preferred leadership behavior for their coaches based on gender, competition level, task dependence, and task variability. Four hundred and eight male and female student-athletes from four NCAA Division I and six Division II universities expressed their preferences using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS) (Zhang, Jensen, & Mann, 1997). The preference version of the RLSS included six behavior dimensions, autocratic, democratic, positive feedback, situational consideration, social support, and training and instruction behaviors.

A split-plot ANOVA was performed on the individual preference scores grouped by gender, competition level, …

Juror's Perception Of Recovered Memory, Type Of Trauma And Adult Witness Demeanor, Donna Marie Vigilante

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

College students judged the testimony in a civil trial in which a childhood memory had been recovered after 20 years. Participants were 108 students (n = 79 female and 29 male) enrolled in undergraduate psychology courses. The design was a 2 X 2 X 2 between subjects factorial design which investigated effects of the type of incident (sexual abuse/hit-and-run), how the memory was recovered (therapy/wedding), and type of testimony (assertive/emotional). The study determined that mock jurors were likely to perceive the plaintiff's testimony as credible when she testified she was sexually abused as a child rather than when she was …

Long-Term Working Memory In Text Production, Ronald Thomas Kellogg Jan 2001

Long-Term Working Memory In Text Production, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In reading and other high-level cognitive tasks, Ericsson and Kintsch (1995) proposed that the limited capacity of short-term working memory (STWM) is supplemented by long- term working memory (LTWM) for individuals with a high degree of domain-specific knowledge. In Experiment 1, college students (N = 80) wrote persuasive and narrative texts concerning baseball; domain-specific knowledge about baseball and verbal ability was assessed. The results showed that verbal ability and domain-specific knowledge independently affected writing skill, supporting the view that literacy depends on both knowledge sources and refuting one argument raised in support of the LTWM hypothesis. Experiment 2 (N = …
