Of Time, Space, And The History Of Sociology: Methodological Rules In Archives And Archival Research, Michael R. Hill Jan 2001

Of Time, Space, And The History Of Sociology: Methodological Rules In Archives And Archival Research, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The "archival turn" that characterizes much new and recent work in the disciplinary history of sociology is institutionally situated and replete with professional obligations and scholarly expectations, some less visible than others. Unlike our colleagues in academic departments of history, we are relative newcomers to archives and their riches. Pandora-like, enough sociologists have now opened the archival door to make this a propitious moment to reflect methodologically on what we are doing when we ask archival questions and report archival discoveries. This essay invites our corporate consideration of three vital features of archival research into the history of sociology: (1) …

A Methodological Comparison Of Harriet Martineau’S Society In America (1837) And Alexis De Tocqueville’S Democracy In America (1835-1840), Michael R. Hill Jan 2001

A Methodological Comparison Of Harriet Martineau’S Society In America (1837) And Alexis De Tocqueville’S Democracy In America (1835-1840), Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

It is commonplace in american intellectual circles to cite Alexis De Tocqueville's (1835-40) Democracy in America as an insightful work by an astute foreign observer who carefully assayed the character of American politics and social institutions. Year after year, Tocqueville's Democracy in America receives, by far, many more citations in Social Sciences Citation Index than does Harriet Martineau's (1837) Society in America. Few essays on "democracy" appear in popular outlets such as The New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, and Newsweek without including an homage to Tocqueville and his presumably well-founded insights. At the same time, Harriet Martineau's …

The effectiveness of a peer mediation program implemented in a small, low income elementary school (520 students grades kindergarten through fifth) was examined. Twelve fifth grade students were trained in the fall of 1998 to mediate conflicts during the 1998–1999 school year and twelve fourth grade students were trained in the spring of 1999 to serve as conflict managers during the 1999–2000 school year. All conflict managers were trained using the San Francisco Community Boards Program. During the mediation session, conflict managers completed a report form which outlined the research questions and described the types of conflict brought to mediation, …

Memory Recall Among Individuals Reporting Child Sexual Abuse: The Role Of Suggestibility, Dissociation, And Closeness With The Perpetrator, Tammy M. Schultz Jan 2001

Memory Recall Among Individuals Reporting Child Sexual Abuse: The Role Of Suggestibility, Dissociation, And Closeness With The Perpetrator, Tammy M. Schultz

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade, a contentious debate regarding delayed memories of child sexual abuse (CSA) has existed. Advocates on one side of the debate (Williams, 1994) maintain that common sequelae to traumatic events include memory disturbances. Dissociation and the dependent relationship between the victim and perpetrator are used to explain these memory disturbances. In contrast, proponents from the other end of the continuum (Loftus, 1993) argue abusive events are memorable, and suggestible clients adopt erroneous traumatic memories, as a result of leading questions used in therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiology of CSA, and address …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-method research study focused on successful first-generation college students enrolled at a mid-sized public university. The study's purpose was to explore factors that help explain academic persistence and progress among first-generation college students at Indiana State University. Quantitative analyses tested the predictive power of student characteristics associated with academic success that are commonly found in research literature. The study's 17 predictor variables together accounted for 21% of the variance in first-generation college student success. The independent variables of (1) high school grade point average, (2) SAT total score, (3) hours spent on high school homework, (4) gaining a college …

The Psychological And Social Characteristics Among College Students Who Binge Drink, Mary Elizabeth Grigar

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined whether personality type and social variables predict: (a) binge drinking behavior, and (b) alcohol related consequences. Two hundred thirty-seven first year students from a private, Midwest, engineering college were administered the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, a Student Information Questionnaire, a Drinking Questionnaire, and the Young Adult Alcohol Problems Screening Test. Binge drinking was defined as the successive consumption of four or more drinks for women and five or more drinks for men in one sitting. Logistical and multiple regression analyses were performed. The judgment-perception personality type predicted binge drinking behavior. The social variables which predicted binge drinkers …

A Comparison Of Early Childhood Recollections Of Repetitive Self -Mutilators And Non-Self-Mutilators In A State Prison Population, Elena V. Merenova

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The psychological disorder of repetitive self-mutilation represents a significant clinical problem. In spite of the growing interest in this problem, insufficiency of information does not allow listing self-mutilation as a separate disorder in DSM-IV. The present research was aimed to add to an understanding the phenomenon of self-mutilating behavior from the point of view of Adler's individualPsychology. The early childhood recollections (ERs) of 32 self-mutilators (SM) drawn from the population of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF) were compared to the ERs of 37 non self-mutilators (NSM) drawn from the same population. The participants completed the Demographic Questionnaire and the …

A Test Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change With Adolescent Sex Offenders In Treatment, Stephen Leonce Mailloux Jan 2001

A Test Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change With Adolescent Sex Offenders In Treatment, Stephen Leonce Mailloux

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rationale for treating adolescent sex offenders is based on the expectation that change will occur. Yet, not all adolescent sex offenders are ready or willing to change. The Transtheoretical model describes a person's readiness for change and predicts the likelihood of change based on level of readiness. While the model has been successfully applied to adults, it has never been applied to adolescent sex offenders in treatment. Thus one of the goals of the study was to provide descriptive information on the applicability of the model's stage of change to adolescent sex offenders in treatment. A second goal was …

Cognitive, Academic, And Behavioral Differences Between Children With Different Subtypes Of Adhd, Gregory Scott Howell Jan 2001

Cognitive, Academic, And Behavioral Differences Between Children With Different Subtypes Of Adhd, Gregory Scott Howell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated cognitive, academic, and behavioral differences among clinic-referred children diagnosed with different subtypes of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Children diagnosed with ADHD Predominantly Inattentive Type (ADHD-I), children diagnosed with ADHD Combined Type (ADHD-C), children in a clinical control group, and children in a nonreferred control group were compared on measures of cognitive ability, academic achievement, and behavior. It was hypothesized that the nonreferred control group would outperform the other groups on some of these measures. It was also hypothesized that few of these measures would distinguish among the ADHD groups. The results showed that there were no significant differences …

Impact Of A Court -Ordered Psychoeducational Course On Stepfamily Adaptability And Cohesion, Heather Jo Henderson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the impact of court-ordered participation in a psychoeducational course on stepfamily adaptability and cohesion. Thirty parental dyads, consisting of one biological parent and one stepparent of an adjudicated adolescent, were randomly assigned to the treatment or control group. Treatment dyads participated in a 5-session workshop based on the Strengthening Stepfamilies” psychoeducational program (Albert & Einstein, 1986). Both groups were administered a demographic data questionnaire and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale-III (FACES-III; Olson, Portner, & Lavee, 1985). Additionally, the treatment group participated in a follow-up interview. Results of plotting the FACES-III scores on the Family Circumplex …

The Relationships Among Personality Factors, Gender, White Racial Consciousness Types, And Birth Order, Elan Adam Cohen Jan 2001

The Relationships Among Personality Factors, Gender, White Racial Consciousness Types, And Birth Order, Elan Adam Cohen

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Helms (1989) theorized that a person's racial identity is impacted by personality and family-of-origin experiences. Research studies have indicated that gender (Kopinak, 1987), the Five Factor Model (FFM) personality factors (Trapnell, 1994), and the family level variable of birth order (Sulloway, 1996) are associated with constructs similar to racial identity. This study considered Helms' theory and the related research. The purpose was to examine how gender and Achieved White Racial Consciousness (WRC; Rowe et al., 1994) types differed on personality factors and to predict membership in one of the four Achieved WRC types based on one's birth order, while considering …

Is Napster A Vcr? The Implications Of Sony For Napster And Other Internet Technologies, Stacey Dogan

Faculty Scholarship

The staple article of commerce doctrine must strike a balance between a copyright holder's legitimate demand for effective-not merely symbolic-protection of the statutory monopoly, and the rights of others freely to engage in substantially unrelated areas of commerce.

In Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, the Supreme Court created the copyright version of the so-called "staple article of commerce doctrine."'2 Its stated objective was to strike a balance between the incentive objectives of copyright3 and the interests of the public in access to new technology.4 As defined by the Court, the doctrine prevents copyright holders from interfering with …

Using Systems Perspectives In Supervision, Marilyn J. Montgomery, C. Bret Hendricks, Loretta J. Bradley Jan 2001

Using Systems Perspectives In Supervision, Marilyn J. Montgomery, C. Bret Hendricks, Loretta J. Bradley

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This article emphasizes the important contributions of systems theory in the supervision process. A case study is used to illustrate how attention to the systemic contexts of the client, the supervisee, and the supervision process itself enlarges the possibilities for helpful change. The unifying themes of many systems theories are identified (diagnosing the system, viewing problems in context, and focusing on systemic change), and techniques for keeping supervision systemically focused are suggested. The usefulness of systems perspectives for conceptualizing diverse cultural influences and for framing advocacy efforts is explored. In addition, the supervision goals of three common systems-based approaches (structural, …

Opportunity Knocks Only Once? Challenging Common Beliefs About Adulthood, Marilyn Montgomery, Camille Debell, Patricia R. Mccarthy, Gerald Parr Jan 2001

Opportunity Knocks Only Once? Challenging Common Beliefs About Adulthood, Marilyn Montgomery, Camille Debell, Patricia R. Mccarthy, Gerald Parr

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Growth-oriented groups for adults are designed to help individuals learn about themselves for the purpose of making constructive life changes. While the success of such groups always depends to some extent on individual characteristics (e.g., motivation, openness to experience), group success can also be affected by members' beliefs or stereotypes about appropriate age-related behaviour. In this article, proverbs such as Don't change horses mid-stream or Opportunity knocks only once are targeted for discussion by group participants as a means of identifying irrational beliefs, confronting stereotypes, promoting flexible thinking, and examining acceptable adult behaviour.

Determining The Termination Percentage Of Heart Rate Maximum For Submaximal Testing, Julia A. Valentour Jan 2001

Determining The Termination Percentage Of Heart Rate Maximum For Submaximal Testing, Julia A. Valentour

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

BACKGROUND: In the Fourth Edition of the American College of Sports Medicine's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (1991). the protocol for the ACSM's submaximal bike test was to terminate the test at 65-70% of the age predicted maximal heart rate. In the Fifth Edition, this was changed to 85% of the age-predicted maximal heart rate.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to find out, by using the ACSM submaximal cycle ergometer test (see Appendix A) if the 85% heart rate maximum termination provides a more accurate estimate of maximal aerobic capacity than the 70% heart rate maximum termination. …

Women In Public Middle School Administration In Georgia: A Feminist Analysis Of The Perceptions Of Women In Power, Karen L. Doty Jan 2001

Women In Public Middle School Administration In Georgia: A Feminist Analysis Of The Perceptions Of Women In Power, Karen L. Doty

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The field of educational leadership is currently experiencing an era of educational change. Women who work in primarily male-dominated careers as principals of middle schools have experienced a variety of complex issues related to their leadership roles and their gender roles. There has been a notable increase in the number of female principals in Georgia, and in the nation, therefore the role of the principal was studied to determine how much this role has changed. Feminist standpoint theory was used to provide different insights and perspectives about the problem of marginalization of women in educational administration. Georgia middle school principals …

The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Previous research has found contradictory results when examining the possible relationship between jealousy and self-esteem (Guerrero & Afifi, 1998, Mathes & Severa, 1981; Mikulincer, Bizman, & Aizenberg, 1989, Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Stewart & Beatty, 1985; White, 1981). Jealousy has been most often researched in romantic relationships (Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Salovey & Rodin, 1986) and social comparison situations (Bers & Rodin, 1984, Mikulincer, Bizman, & .Aizenberg, 1989). Few studies have examined jealousy in an athletic setting. Sport jealousy has received little attention because until recently, there was no reliable instrument to measure jealousy in sport. Pease (1987) investigated the …

Two Views Of The River: A Critique Of The Liberal Defense Of Affirmative Action, Charles R. Lawrence Iii Jan 2001

Two Views Of The River: A Critique Of The Liberal Defense Of Affirmative Action, Charles R. Lawrence Iii

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In response to the attack on affirmative action at educational institutions, the argument that the benefits of diversity necessitate keeping affirmative action has emerged as the dominant defense of race-conscious admissions policies. Describing this argument as the “liberal defense of affirmative action,” Professor Lawrence critiques the liberal defense because it fails to challenge the manner in which traditional standards of merit perpetuate race and class privilege, and pushes aside more radically, substantive defenses of affirmative action which articulate the need to remedy past and ongoing discrimination. While recognizing the difficulties and ambivalence inherent in advancing a new vision for defending …

The Emergence Of Dialogic Identities: Transforming Heteroglossia In The Marquesas, F.P., Kathleen C. Riley Jan 2001

The Emergence Of Dialogic Identities: Transforming Heteroglossia In The Marquesas, F.P., Kathleen C. Riley

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Te 'Enana 'the people' of the Marquesas, French Polynesia, have been engaged for some time in the dialogic negotiation of their heteroglossic identity. Based on an ethnographic study of language socialization in the Marquesas, this dissertation examines how communicative forms are acquired within a changing socio-cultural matrix, as well as on how cultural habits and beliefs are produced and reproduced via verbal interaction.

My first two months of fieldwork were spent in Tahiti (the capital of French Polynesia), living and studying the language use and cultural patterns of an 'enana family. Subsequently, I spent ten months in a village in …

Crime Legends In Old And New Media, Pamela Donovan Jan 2001

Crime Legends In Old And New Media, Pamela Donovan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project explores the contemporary meanings and persistence of the "crime legend." A case study approach was used: three crime legends with a considerable history of public debunking were chosen. These cases were: the market in snuff films, the theft of vital organs for black-market transplant, and the abduction of children from theme park restrooms. Current versions circulating in Internet newsgroups and via electronic mail lists were collected. Discussions in Internet newsgroups were examined and twenty regular newsgroup participants were interviewed. The public newsgroup communication environment is such that salience is established by the interlocutors themselves, rather than by the …

The Influence Of An Active Postvention On The Length Of Time Elapsed Before Survivors Of Suicide Seek Treatment., Frank Ray Campbell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Those who are significantly impacted by the death of someone to suicide are known as survivors of suicide. This study examined two groups of suicide survivors, one group received an active postvention model (APM), and the other group received no active postvention model. The study utilized both t-test and chi-square to compare the groups based on key demographic characteristics. The study compared model of postvention (active versus passive) for the time elapsed between the suicide and the survivors seeking treatment. The two groups studied were survivors who sought treatment at a well established metropolitan crisis intervention center in the southern …
