The Effectiveness Of Positive Behavior Support With Children Diagnosed Adhd, Lisa K. Smell Jan 2001

The Effectiveness Of Positive Behavior Support With Children Diagnosed Adhd, Lisa K. Smell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Much controversy is centered on treatment options for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Problems finding an appropriate treatment involve the lack of understanding of ADHD, the failure to teach alternative skills, and the lack of parental compliance and consistency with the behavior procedures. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Positive Behavior Support (PBS), with children diagnosed with ADHD, when parents are consistent and compliant with PBS procedures. Two children participated in this study. Three assessment instruments were used as predictor variables, the PBS and ADHD Pre-test/Post-test Questionnaire, the Observation Rating Checklist of Compliance, and the …

Landpower And Crises: Army Roles And Missions In Smaller-Scale Contingencies During The 1990s, Conrad C. Crane Dr. Jan 2001

Landpower And Crises: Army Roles And Missions In Smaller-Scale Contingencies During The 1990s, Conrad C. Crane Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author analyzes the role of landpower in the 170 smaller-scale contingencies conducted by the United States during the last decade. He divides such contingencies into engagement, enhanced deterrence, hostility, and stabilization phases, and discusses the military's role in each one. The author especially emphasizes the recurring problems in the planning, execution, and force structure for stabilization tasks, including nation-building. He concludes that, despite the desire of American leaders to limit military involvement in such missions, it is unavoidable because of the capability mismatch between military and civilian organizations, combined with the requirements of peace operations and the character of …

The American Army In The Balkans: Strategic Alternatives And Implications, Steven Metz Dr. Jan 2001

The American Army In The Balkans: Strategic Alternatives And Implications, Steven Metz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

U.S. strategy in the Balkans and the Army's role there is examined. The author recommends continued U.S. involvement, consideration of a long-term American military presence in the region, and some significant changes in role of the U.S. Army. The goals that led the United States into the Balkans have not yet been fully met. To do so requires both sustained involvement in that region and a continued refinement at the Army's peace operations capabilities. From a broader perspective, he argues that, if U.S. political leaders decide that involvement in protracted peace operations will be an enduring part of American strategy, …

Differential Effects Of Incentive Motivators On Work Performance, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans Jan 2001

Differential Effects Of Incentive Motivators On Work Performance, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

In this field experiment, we first compared the performance effects of money systematically administered through the organizational behavior modification (O.B. Mod.) model and routine pay for performance and then compared the effects of O.B. Mod.- administered money, social recognition, and performance feedback. The money intervention based on the O.B. Mod. outperformed routine pay for performance (performance increase = 37% vs. 11%) and also had stronger effects on performance than social recognition (24%) and performance feedback (20%).

Way-Finding And Landmarks: The Multiple Bearings Hypothesis, Alan C. Kamil, Ken Cheng Jan 2001

Way-Finding And Landmarks: The Multiple Bearings Hypothesis, Alan C. Kamil, Ken Cheng

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) are capable of very precise searching using the metric relationships between a goal and multiple landmarks to relocate the goal location. They can judge the direction more accurately than the distance to a landmark when the landmark is distant from the goal. On the basis of these findings, we propose that nutcrackers use a set of bearings, each a measure of the direction from the goal to a different landmark, when searching for that goal. The results of a simulation demonstrate that increasing the number of landmarks used results in increasingly precise searching. This …

Review Of Evolution And Cognition, Edited By Cecilia Heyes And Ludwig Huber., Alan Kamil Jan 2001

Review Of Evolution And Cognition, Edited By Cecilia Heyes And Ludwig Huber., Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Heyes and Huber have edited a volume that surveys much of the current research into cognition in animals, reflecting the strengths and weaknesses of this field. The book is divided into five sections. In the first part, titled “Orientations,” four authors lay out their basic general views of the field. The first two chapters in this section are by the editors. First, Heyes makes the case for an approach to evolutionary psychology that she labels “in the round,” an approach that would encompass studies of human and nonhuman animals alike and include a broad range of contemporary evolutionary approaches. This …

A Study Of Factors That Influence Academic Success Of Black American Middle School Males, Harvey S. Hicks Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The Black American male has had to face and endure many physical, emotional, and psychological hardships since his ancestors arrived in this country as slaves. One of those hardships has been his constant status as a second-class citizen. Throughout his history in America, the Black male has received unequal pay, unequal justice, unequal medical care, unequal treatment, and unequal education. Yet, despite the circumstances and the odds, there have been Black males who have achieved in many fields. However, even today, in the field of education, achieving academically is not an endeavor most Black males pursue.

This study investigated some …

Gaba-A Receptor Subunit Alterations Following Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury And The Effects Of An Nmda Antagonist: A Western Blot Analysis, Cynthia J. Gibson Jan 2001

Gaba-A Receptor Subunit Alterations Following Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury And The Effects Of An Nmda Antagonist: A Western Blot Analysis, Cynthia J. Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) produces an acute phase of neuronal excitation followed by a chronic phase of depressed neuronal function. Alterations in excitatory and inhibitory receptor interactions may be dynamically involved in subsequent long-term detriments in neuronal and cognitive functioning. TBI- induced elevations in intracellular calcium concentrations ([Ca2+]i) are mediated primarily by the NMDA receptor. Elevated [Ca2+]i may trigger intracellular mechanisms which drive changes in GABA-A receptor protein synthesis and expression, ultimately resulting in receptor dysfunction.

Western blot analysis was used to investigate alterations to GABA-A receptor subunits α1 and β33 in the …

Criminalizing "Virtual" Child Pornography Under The Child Pornography Prevention Act: Is It Really What It "Appears To Be?", Wade T. Anderson Jan 2001

Criminalizing "Virtual" Child Pornography Under The Child Pornography Prevention Act: Is It Really What It "Appears To Be?", Wade T. Anderson

University of Richmond Law Review

Years after his death, John Wayne sells beer in television commercials. Eons after their extinction, lifelike dinosaurs continue to terrorize actors and thrill moviegoers. The highest- grossing film of all time4 employs "virtual" passengers aboard the Titanic, worrying some members of the Screen Actors Guild. All of these feats have been accomplished using sophisticated computer graphics software that blurs the distinction between imagination and reality. This manipulative digital power has raised concerns about such things as "digital kidnapping," the unauthorized misuse of digital images. For example, such digital misuse could include, as intellectual property professor Joseph Beard notes, "a star …
