A Review Of The Research Literature Pertaining To The Effects Of Student Nutrition Upon Cognitive And Behavioral Performance In The Classroom In Support Of Nutritious Snack Interventions During The School Day, Patricia Annette Winblade

Graduate Research Papers

Many educators know from anecdotal experience that when students are hungry or undernourished, they tend to be irritable, apathetic, and lethargic. They often have little energy and have difficulty concentrating. All of these factors can interfere with learning as well as initiate inappropriate classroom behavior. This study reviews the available body of published research pertaining to the effects of nutrition upon cognitive and behavioral performance in the classroom. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to describe the effects of proper and improper nutrition of students on cognitive and behavioral performance in the context of examining the need for and …

Group Contingencies And Classroom Applications, Eric Weichers Jan 2001

Group Contingencies And Classroom Applications, Eric Weichers

Graduate Research Papers

Group contingency is a method of behavior control which is usually used unknowingly on a daily basis in the classroom. And more than likely, its result was success. So why is it that so few teachers use group contingencies as a formal intervention? One possibility is a lack of understanding concerning the principles involved. Another possibility is an erroneous belief that it is a difficult intervention. It may be the lack of knowledge concerning the power of a group contingency. Whatever the reason, group contingencies are not often employed by teachers as formal interventions.

The Correlation Between Scholastic Reading Counts™ And Middle School Students' Reading Motivation, Lana Pitstick

Graduate Research Papers

Many middle school students have little desire to read independently and struggle with reading achievement. The use of computerized reading programs is being widely used in schools to help improve this problem. The researcher intended to investigate the effect that Scholastic Reading Counts™ has on middle school students' reading motivation during and after participation in the program. The study consisted of two phases in which students kept reading logs of the minutes they read for pleasure during school and outside of school. During the first phase, students participated in the Scholastic Reading Counts™ program as part of their reading classes. …

Heart Failure: Its Impact On Women's Lives, Diane L Rhodes Jan 2001

Heart Failure: Its Impact On Women's Lives, Diane L Rhodes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research has shown women are affected by heart failure differently than men, having different risk factors for heart failure (HF), a higher increase in mortality per decade, and longer survival after diagnosis. Women have also been greatly under-represented in studies of HF. A search of the literature revealed only one (Swedish) study examining the overall impact of HF on women's conception of their own lives; This phenomenological study examined the changes in the lives since diagnosis of five women with Stage II HF. Four one-hour, semi-structured interviews were held with each. Colaizzi's steps were used to assess the verbatim transcripts …

A Primer On Learning Styles: Reaching Every Student, M.H. Sam Jacobson Jan 2001

A Primer On Learning Styles: Reaching Every Student, M.H. Sam Jacobson

Seattle University Law Review

Many authors and researchers have written extensively about learning styles, but the literature can be daunting to the uninitiated. This article establishes a framework that will put the literature into perspective, will allow professors to evaluate what is meant by "learning syle," and will give them guidance for how to be more effective teachers both in the classroom and out. Part I discusses how knowledge of learning styles will help professors achieve their pedagogical goals. Part II discusses the personal characteristics that contribute to learning style. Finally, Part III applies the learning styles to the learning cycle and discusses how …

Re-Imagining International Human Rights Education In Our Time: Beyond Three Constitutive Orthodoxies, Obiora Chinedu Okafor, Shedrack C. Agbakwa Jan 2001

Re-Imagining International Human Rights Education In Our Time: Beyond Three Constitutive Orthodoxies, Obiora Chinedu Okafor, Shedrack C. Agbakwa

Articles & Book Chapters

This article seeks to show that both the conceptualization and practice of international human rights education within the mainstream human rights community has been shaped and framed, with mostly negative consequences, by at least three constitutive orthodoxies: a heaven-hell binary distinction between an all but "perfect" West and an all but "hellish" Third World, a consequent unidirectional traffic of human rights teaching from the West to the rest, and a reliance on the abolitionist paradigm of human rights education. It starts by mapping these orthodoxies, and proceeds thereafter to challenge them as fundamentally problematic and as capable of frustrating the …

Women Writing Auto/Biography: Anna Banti’S Artemisia And Eunice Lipton’S Alias Olympia, Claire Marrone

Languages Faculty Publications

Neat definitions of biographical and autobiographical writing have been challenged in the twentieth century. This essay offers a comparative study of two texts which may be classified as autobiography or biography or both, and which, because of their blurred generic boundaries, bring to light several theoretical questions about life writing.

Determinants Of Educational Attainment Among Adolescents In Egypt: Does School Quality Make A Difference?, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Sahar El Tawila, Wesley H. Clark, Barbara Mensch Jan 2001

Determinants Of Educational Attainment Among Adolescents In Egypt: Does School Quality Make A Difference?, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Sahar El Tawila, Wesley H. Clark, Barbara Mensch

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The paper explores empirically the relationship between school quality in Egyptian preparatory (middle) schools and the likelihood of school dropout either during preparatory school or before the completion of secondary school. Despite strong empirical evidence for the many positive social and economic returns associated with more years of schooling, there has been little research exploring how the quality of particular schools might influence grade levels attained. The authors address this research gap using detailed data on Egyptian preparatory schools (grades 6-8, the last three years of the eight years of basic schooling) that are linked with a national survey of …

Petitions For Life: Executive Clemency In Missouri Death Penalty Cases, Cathleen Burnett Jan 2001

Petitions For Life: Executive Clemency In Missouri Death Penalty Cases, Cathleen Burnett

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The thesis of this article is that low reversal rates mean serious errors are not being detected and corrected. The research will focus on Missouri, which has very low reversal rates of 15% in federal court and 20% in state court. The data to address this question comes from the clemency petitions submitted to the governor as the last step in the process of executing the death penalty. These petitions illustrate the range and magnitude of the claims of legal problems in one state. The clemency petitions provide the most complete and full statement of the condemned's case, because these …

Effects Of Immigrant Status On Mexicans In The United States, Michelle Monique Balan Jan 2001

Effects Of Immigrant Status On Mexicans In The United States, Michelle Monique Balan

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes the relationship between immigration and mental health. I used data from a health and migration study of Mexican immigrant women in a Houston community. I found a statistically significant negative relationship between family social support and feelings of depression. Thus, family social support may have buffered some harmful effects of immigrating to the United States. However, I found inconsistent results with labor market variables that may be due to a measurement problem. Both employment variables were statistically significant (p<.05) for models (predictor, predictor and control) including loss of interest and these variables remained significant after control variables were added. Unfortunately, only one of the work variables--the number of months the respondent worked--was in the predicted direction. Contrary to expectations, the other employment variable (ever worked) was negatively related to a loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities.

Signs Sense: Exploring Signs In Urban Place Making, Amy Elizabeth Pecquet Jan 2001

Signs Sense: Exploring Signs In Urban Place Making, Amy Elizabeth Pecquet

LSU Master's Theses

Signs are prominent elements of the urban landscape; they display messages to the public, orient people in complex environments, act as social landmarks, and serve as a means of cultural expression. Despite the omnipresence of signs, designers have yet to capitalize on their potential urban spaces as creative design tools for enhancing a sense of place. Using literature and urban case studies, this thesis explores several quantitative methods to learn about effects produced by signs in the urban landscape. Case studies in New Orleans, Louisiana locate every sign in defined areas on Bourbon, Royal, and Canal Street to compare and …

The Effect Of Diet/Supplement Intake And Competitive Swimming/Gymnastics Upon The Bone Mineral Density Of Collegiate Females, Teresa Christine Jones Jan 2001

The Effect Of Diet/Supplement Intake And Competitive Swimming/Gymnastics Upon The Bone Mineral Density Of Collegiate Females, Teresa Christine Jones

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if there was a relationship between dietary/supplemental intake and competitive activity (swimming and gymnastics), on the bone mineral density of 18-21 year old females. Five swimmers, 4 gymnasts, and 12 control subjects were recruited from the university student body. All subjects completed a 3-day diet/supplement record, 3-day activity record, past calcium intake form, and a medical history form. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured for the whole body, L1-L4, the proximal femur and body composition by DEXA. Results indicated the control subjects reported a significantly greater percent of the RDA for …

Finding A Sense Of Self In The World: A Process For Overcoming Personal And Collective Alienation After Institutional Abuse, Seetal Kaur Sunga Jan 2001

Finding A Sense Of Self In The World: A Process For Overcoming Personal And Collective Alienation After Institutional Abuse, Seetal Kaur Sunga

LLM Theses

The author examines three aspects of dispute resolution involving cases of physical and sexual abuse in institutions and other environments. She focuses on judicial and alternative processes that deal with identity formation, empowerment and monetary compensation. She argues that sexual abuse and physical abuse create specific harms to the identity and power of abused persons. These harms should be addressed through a process that can allow for identity-formation and re-configuration of the power relationship between the parties. The author concludes that judicial processes recognize identity formation that occurs outside the legal arena, and are capable of recognizing the power of …
