Focal Point, Volume 15 Number 02, Portland State University. Regional Research Institute

Research and Training Center - Focal Point

This issue of Focal Point begins from the idea that enrichments, far from being frivolous, are instead essential. The joy and meaningfulness which enrichments provide make a direct, positive contribution to quality of life. What is more, enriching experiences add to our reserves of strength and purpose, and these reserves in turn enable us to adapt, cope, recover and even thrive in the face of challenges and stresses. Specifically, this issue of Focal Point looks at research related to sources of enrichment, and at innovative programs that promote enrichment and achieve positive outcomes for children with emotional and behavioral challenges, …

Rural Community Economic Leadership By People With Disabilities, Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Oct 2001

Rural Community Economic Leadership By People With Disabilities, Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

The lack of employment opportunities for people with disabilities is a major problem according to vocational rehabilitation (VR) service providers, American Indian Section 121 employment programs, and people with disabilities (Arnold, Seekins, & Nelson, 1997). This is particularly true in rural areas where local businesses struggle to create enough quality jobs for community members, including people with disabilities. In the face of this challenge, rural residents with and without disabilities frequently opt to pursue self-employment. Yet, VR and Section 121 programs are often confused about existing business opportunities and their potential for success. There are established procedures to analyze markets …

The Sanctification Of Fear: Images Of The Religious In Horror Films, Bryan Stone Oct 2001

The Sanctification Of Fear: Images Of The Religious In Horror Films, Bryan Stone

Journal of Religion & Film

Horror film functions both as a threat and a catharsis by confronting us with our fear of death, the supernatural, the unknown and irrational, ''the other" in general, a loss of identity, and forces beyond our control. Over the last century, religious symbols and themes have played a prominent and persistent role in the on-screen construction of this confrontation. That role is, at the same time, ambiguous insofar as religious iconography has become unhinged from a compelling moral vision and reduced to mere conventions that produce a quasi-religious quality to horror that lacks the symbolic power required to engage us …

The Decline And Fall Of Saint Mary's Of The Barrens: A Case Study In Contraction Of An American Catholic Religious Order - Part One, Richard J. Janet Ph.D. Oct 2001

The Decline And Fall Of Saint Mary's Of The Barrens: A Case Study In Contraction Of An American Catholic Religious Order - Part One, Richard J. Janet Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The closing of Saint Mary’s of the Barrens Seminary offers an example of the reaction of religious orders to the Second Vatican Council. In the United States especially, there was conflict between orders’ missions and their members’ individual identity as tied to specific works. Saint Mary’s Seminary formed hundreds of churchmen and provided a “unifying spirit” to apostolates. It closed due to declining enrollment and changes in the American church’s culture. When it did, Vincentians disagreed on what to do with apostolates. Details on the decision to close Saint Mary’s and the apostolates’ fate are provided from surveys and reports.

Guarding The Sacred Fires: Elizabeth E. Farrell's Contributions To The Creation Of Special Education In New York City, Kimberly E. Kode

Dissertations (1934 -)

The department Farrell founded became a model for those that followed, causing a ripple effect in the practice of teaching and the organization of school systems across the United States. Further, Farrell's involvement in professional organizations such as the Council for Exceptional Children and the New York State Psychological Association established the basis for a special education professional network, still in existence---and thriving-- today. Although a few short biographical pieces on Farrell are available, and she is referenced in numerous journal articles in the area of special education history, there has been no detailed account of Farrell's life and accomplishments. …

Determinants Of Paternal Responsibility, Engagement, Accessibility, Suzanne Mischell Nangle

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The current study was designed to examine several variables that may influence three areas of paternal involvement with young children. Specifically, 75 couples with children between the ages of 1 and 4 completed questionnaires that assessed beliefs and reported fathers' involvement in three areas of childcare described by Lamb, Pleck, Charnov, and Levine ( 1985). Specifically, the three areas of paternal involvement measured were interaction/engagement, accessibility, and responsibility. Based on a review of the literature, the following variables were hypothesized to influence fathers' involvement: gender-role beliefs, paternal competence in the parenting role, marital satisfaction, job stress, work-family conflict, conflict in …

Scientific Ignorance And Reliable Patterns Of Evidence In Toxic Tort Causation: Is There A Need For Liability Reform?, Carl F. Cranor, David A. Eastmond

Law and Contemporary Problems

As a first step to preserving the central aims of tort law, courts will need to recognize the wide variety of respectable, reliable patterns of evidence on which scientists themselves rely for drawing inferences about the toxicity of substances. Courts may also need to take further steps to address the woeful ignorance about the chemical universe. This may necessitate changes in the liability rules.

Scientific Models Of Human Health Risk Analysis In Legal And Policy Decisions, Douglas Crawford-Brown

Law and Contemporary Problems

The quality of scientific predictions of risk in the courtroom and policy arena rests in large measure on how the two differences between normal practice and the legal/policy practice of science are reconciled. This article considers a variety of issues that arise in reconciling these differences, and the problems that remain with scientific estimates of risk when these are used in decisions.

The Empire Of The Lone Mother: Parental Rights, Child Welfare Law, And State Restructuring, Hester Lessard Oct 2001

The Empire Of The Lone Mother: Parental Rights, Child Welfare Law, And State Restructuring, Hester Lessard

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article uses the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in G.(J.) v. New Brunswick to frame a discussion of the historical and ideological character of Canadian child welfare regimes on the nature and experience of women’s citizenship within the liberal political order and, in particular, within the current neo-liberal restructuring of welfare provision. The article also analyzes traditional understandings of the political character of child welfare in terms of state intervention and non-intervention, by placing the state ordering of parent-child relations in the context of larger issues of colonialism, gendered parenting discourses, and the linkage between child neglect and poverty. …

Banks and financial institutions in Hong Kong are increasingly finding themselves facing rapid increases in turbulence and complexity, leading to greater uncertainty and increased competition. Customers are also becoming more demanding. Apart from the traditional type of banking services, customers today require more personalized products and services, and access to such services at any time, and at any place. Although there is no panacea for banks to stay competitive, Internet Banking is one of the advanced information technologies they can employ to achieve a high level of customer services.

Internet Banking is an emerging technology that permits conduct of banking …
