Jesters Freed From Their Jack-In-The-Boxes: Or Springing Creativity Loose From Traditionally Entrenched Honors Students, Leslie Donovan
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Many people in our society manage adequately all their lives without ever flexing a creative muscle. Yet, most of us involved in Honors education expect and want more for our students. We know that those who resist using creativity in their lives and work will be unlikely to push beyond the traditional boundaries of scholastic analysis. Further, we reason that, by operating beyond such boundaries, our students may someday find a cure for cancer, recognize signs marking sentient life on other planets, or move people to leave hatred of differences behind. We realize that such dreams are possible only if …

An Architect’S Foray Into Honors, Betsy West
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
In universities across the country, faculty struggle with the task of bringing creative arts education into the Honors curriculum. I am, therefore, only one of many who have attempted this, and as an Architecture faculty member I can only truly speak to the introduction of visual material and visual awareness. In the course of teaching an Honors seminar, however, I have come to believe that there are, indeed, strategies which make teaching creative arts in an Honors curriculum both possible and enjoyable. I also believe it can be done in such a way as to make the information both accessible …
"No Place To Hide" Wright Morris's Great Plains, Joseph J. Wydeven
"No Place To Hide" Wright Morris's Great Plains, Joseph J. Wydeven
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Perhaps echoing Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach," Wright Morris begins his finest novel, Ceremony in Lone Tree (1960), with an invitation to the reader: "Come to the window," we are beckoned, and then we are told what is there to be seen: not much. But what is there is a view of the Great Plains that is highly conceptual and paradoxically suggestive in its emptiness. Outside the window, "[t]he view is to the west. There is no obstruction but the sky." With us inside the hotel is an old man, Tom Scanlon, who, soured on experience and addicted to nostalgia, has …
Land, Justice, And Angie Debo Telling The Truth To-And About-Your Neighbors, Patricia Nelson Limerick
Land, Justice, And Angie Debo Telling The Truth To-And About-Your Neighbors, Patricia Nelson Limerick
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
When Angie Debo was an old woman, she lived in her hometown of Marshall, Oklahoma, where she had warm and close ties with her neighbors. She also had a more geographically dispersed network: a list of several hundred people, scattered around the nation, whom she would mobilize to write senators and congressmen, or to the president, on behalf of particular campaigns for Indian rights. She sent the members of her network mimeographed letters and in urgent circumstances made phone calls to them. She got her network geared up to write in support of Alaskan Native land claims, an enlargement of …

Review Of Contested Classrooms: Education, Globalization, And Democracy In Alberta Edited By Trevor W. Harrison And Jerrold L. Kachur, Veronika Bohac Clarke
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Contested Classrooms is a collaboration of fourteen authors, most of whom hold doctorates in either educational administration, sociology, political science, psychology, or the humanities. They represent a broad range of educational stakeholders-professors, leaders in the province-wide Alberta Teachers' Association, associates of research institutes, and administrators in the province's public school systems. Together, they contribute experience, expertise, and scholarship to the volume.
The editors' intent is "not only to increase public understanding of education and the deep social, political, and economic change occurring in Alberta, but to goad readers into action and to shape the future direction of public education." Cautioning …
Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - “You Don’T Have To Hear, Just Interpret!”: How Ethnocentrism In The California Courts Impedes Equal Access To The Courts For Spanish Speakers, Roxana Cardenas
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
This article analyzes the legal field’s apparent lack of interest in interpreter-related problems as a major barrier to ensuring equal access to the courts for Spanish speakers. It also seeks to dispel certain myths or misinformation about the function of interpreters by delving into a particular infamous case that involved the misuse of interpreters: the O.J. Simpson case.

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - On The Importance Of Suggestibility Research In Assessing The Credibility Of Children’S Testimony, David A. Martindale
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
In the spring of 1999, Professor Thomas Lyon of the University of Southern California Law School published a lengthy law review article in which he argued that the introduction into evidence of research on the suggestibility of child witnesses was not of assistance to triers of fact.1 Lyon’s article has found its way into judicial training packets and has been posted to electronic bulletin boards sponsored by organizations with interest in custody evaluations, psychology and law, and related topics. Because judges are soon likely to encounter arguments based upon Lyon’s article, I wish to alert judges to what I believe …

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
Our issue begins with Judge Procter Hug, Jr.’s thoughts on judicial independence under pressure. We reprint the remarks he gave as the featured speaker at the American Judges Association’s annual educational conference in October 2001. Judge Hug’s comments, as well as those of AJA president Bonnie Sudderth in her president’s column, deal with issues faced by judges in times of crisis, including in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 3 - Let’S Not Exaggerate The Suggestibility Of Children, Thomas D. Lyon
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
I’m grateful to Dr. Martindale for introducing the reader to an important and lively debate among practitioners and academics over the relevance of recent research on children’s suggestibility. In my Cornell Law Review article, I argued that the recent research on suggestibility was inspired by highly coercive interviewing techniques in widely publicized cases that are not the norm in child sexual abuse investigations. These techniques include telling children that they have been abused, telling children that a particular person is the abuser, and asking children to imagine details regarding how abuse could have taken place. Moreover, I argued that the …

Teachers' Perceptions Of And Interventions In Episodes Of Bullying In Schools, Carynn Townsend Wiggins
Teachers' Perceptions Of And Interventions In Episodes Of Bullying In Schools, Carynn Townsend Wiggins
Doctoral Dissertations
Bullying, defined as the repeated exposure of a less powerful person to negative actions by a more powerful person or group of people, is a serious problem in schools. There are often severe negative consequences, both short-term and long-term, for both the victim and the bully. The attitudes of teachers play a major role in determining the extent and the acceptance of bullying in schools.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the perceptions of selected teachers in reference to bullying. Six teachers were chosen from regional and state teacher of the year competition during 1998–2000. In addition, six …

Just Deserts: An Experimental Study Of Distributive Justice Norms, John T. Scott, Richard E. Matland, Philip A. Michelbach, Brian H. Bornstein
Just Deserts: An Experimental Study Of Distributive Justice Norms, John T. Scott, Richard E. Matland, Philip A. Michelbach, Brian H. Bornstein
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
We present a theoretically Informed experimental study of distributive justice norms concerning income distribution. Our study consists of three related experiments that examine how individuals use four distinct allocation principles derived from both normative and empirical research— equality, merit, need, and efficiency— under a condition of impartiality. Our experiments are designed to investigate these principles and to determine how independent factors influence how individuals use them. We find that individuals tend to use all or most of these principles simultaneously in making distributive justice judgments, but that they weigh them differently according to various factors. In particular, we find an …
Mormonism And Islam Through The Eyes Of A “Universal Historian”, James K. Lyon
Mormonism And Islam Through The Eyes Of A “Universal Historian”, James K. Lyon
BYU Studies
In 1912 the internationally known German historian Eduard Meyer published a book that ranked as a curiosity among his writings to that point. In it this remarkably prolific scholar, who in the previous thirty years had published a monumental five-volume history of the ancient world and 274 other books, treatises, and articles, explored two topics that were so alien to the mainstream of his previous work that it baffled his learned peers. Those topics were Mormonism and Islam. Entitled Ursprung und Geschichte der Mormonen, mit Exkursen über die Anfänge des Islâms und des Christentums (The origin and history of the …

A Comprehensive Approach To Conflicts Between Antidiscrimination Laws And Freedom Of Expressive Association After Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale, Adrianne K. Zahner
A Comprehensive Approach To Conflicts Between Antidiscrimination Laws And Freedom Of Expressive Association After Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale, Adrianne K. Zahner
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This Comment examines the United States Supreme Court decision in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, which held that New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination violated the First Amendment by preventing the Boy Scouts from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation in the selection of members and troop leaders. Zahner analyzes the Dale decision in light of prior freedom of expressive association case law, and reconciles inconsistencies by proposing a comprehensive framework for dealing with conflicts between antidiscrimination laws and freedom of expressive association. The proposed framework provides absolute protection for freedom of association for purely expressive groups, very …
