Surprise And Sense-Making: The Organizational Socialization Of First -Year Teachers In Intermediate Grades Four Through Six, Kathleen Joanne Daley Peterson Dec 2001

Surprise And Sense-Making: The Organizational Socialization Of First -Year Teachers In Intermediate Grades Four Through Six, Kathleen Joanne Daley Peterson

Student Work

This qualitative dissertation study used grounded theory methodology modified to accept received theory to examine organizational and professional socialization as experienced by a group of ten first-year teachers in grades four through six. Stage model theory and surprise and sense-making theory supplied the study's conceptual framework. The first-year teachers were interviewed three times during the 2000–2001 school year to identify elements of their organizational socialization experience.

Performance -Based Assessment: Teacher Perceptions Of Implementation And Related Potential Outcomes, Gary Martin Shudak Dec 2001

Performance -Based Assessment: Teacher Perceptions Of Implementation And Related Potential Outcomes, Gary Martin Shudak

Student Work

The purposes of this study were to determine: (a) whether and to what extent teachers' perceptions of a district-wide performance-based student assessment program (PBA) correlated with teacher demographics (sex, age, years in the district, years teaching, regular or special education, grade level/subject area taught, elementary or secondary assignment, year of undergraduate degree, and highest level of education attained); (b) whether and to what extent teachers' perceptions of the implementation of PBA correlated with their perceptions of PBA's effects on teaching behaviors, professional identity, relationships with others in the profession, and student achievement; (c) the extent to which teachers felt the …

Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff Dec 2001

Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff

Biology Faculty Research

How does one talk about moral thought and moral action as a religious naturalist? We explore this question by considering two human capacities: the capacity for mindfulness, and the capacity for virtue. We suggest that mindfulness is deeply enhanced by an understanding of the scientific worldview and that the four cardinal virtues—courage, fairmindedness, humaneness, and reverence—are rendered coherent by mindful reflection. We focus on the concept of mindful reverence and propose that the mindful reverence elicited by the evolutionary narrative is at the heart of religious naturalism. Religious education, we suggest, entails the cultivation of mindful virtue, in ourselves and …

Constitutional Doctrine As Paring Tool: The Struggle For "Relevant" Evidence In University Of Alabama V. Garrett, Pamela Brandwein Dec 2001

Constitutional Doctrine As Paring Tool: The Struggle For "Relevant" Evidence In University Of Alabama V. Garrett, Pamela Brandwein

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article examines the difficulties involved in translating the social model of disability into the idiom of constitutional law. The immediate focus is University of Alabama v. Garrett. Both parts of this Article consider how disability rights claims collide with a discourse of legitimacy in constitutional law. Part I focuses on the arguments presented in several major Briefs filed in support of Garrett. Constitutional doctrines are conceived as paring tools and it is shown how the Court used these doctrines to easily pare down the body of evidence Garrett's lawyers sought to claim as relevant in justifying the ADA …

Disability, Equal Protection, And The Supreme Court: Standing At The Crossroads Of Progressive And Retrogressive Logic In Constitutional Classification, Anita Silvers, Michael Ashley Stein Dec 2001

Disability, Equal Protection, And The Supreme Court: Standing At The Crossroads Of Progressive And Retrogressive Logic In Constitutional Classification, Anita Silvers, Michael Ashley Stein

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article compares current disability jurisprudence with the development of sex equality jurisprudence in the area of discrimination. It demonstrates that current disability law resembles the abandoned, sexist framework for determining sex equality and argues that disability equality cases should receive similar analysis as the more progressive, current sex equality standard. As such, the Article attempts to synthesize case law (14th Amendment Equal Protection jurisprudence) and statutory law (Title VII and the ADA) into a comprehensive overview of the state of current disability law viewed within the context of discrimination law in general.

Civil War Pension Attorneys And Disability Politics, Peter Blanck, Chen Song Dec 2001

Civil War Pension Attorneys And Disability Politics, Peter Blanck, Chen Song

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Professor Blanck and Dr. Song provide a detailed examination of the pension disability program established after the Civil War for Union Army Veterans. They use many original sources and perform several statistical analyses as the basis for their summary. They draw parallels between this disability program and the ADA, and they point out that current ADA plaintiffs encounter many of the same social, political and even scientific issues that Union Army veterans dealt with when applying for their disability pensions. The Article demonstrates that history can help predict the trends within, and evolution of the ADA--essentially leading to a better …

The Death Of Section 504, Ruth Colker Dec 2001

The Death Of Section 504, Ruth Colker

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article argues that the passage of the ADA had an unexpected consequence, namely the narrowing of the rights that were understood to exist under Section 504. Section 504 covered two broad areas of the law: the law of employment for individuals employed by entities receiving federal financial assistance and the law of education for students attending primary, secondary or higher education. The effect on the law of employment, which I will discuss in Part II, has been immediate and dramatic. The effect on the law of education, discussed in Part III, cannot yet be fully documented. Recent decisions, however, …

Reforming Disability Nondiscrimination Laws: A Comparative Perspective, Stanley S. Herr Dec 2001

Reforming Disability Nondiscrimination Laws: A Comparative Perspective, Stanley S. Herr

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Comparing the law and policies of other countries concerning disability rights to ours can help us understand how we may strengthen those rights and heighten compliance with nondiscrimination laws. Since it took effect in 1992, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been a leading example of such comprehensive legislation on behalf of people with disabilities. Along with the United Nations Standard Rules on Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities, the ADA has inspired many countries to develop their own disability nondiscrimination laws and remedial agencies. This process must work in both directions, however, and laws and agencies from …

Evidence On The Effectiveness Of Using Tax Credits To Promote Energy Conservation, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Michael R. Kinney, Jack Robison Dec 2001

Evidence On The Effectiveness Of Using Tax Credits To Promote Energy Conservation, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Michael R. Kinney, Jack Robison

Accounting

The country seems to have quickly embarked on a new energy crisis. "From Manhattan to Montana, worries are mounting that skyrocketing power prices and rolling blackouts will soon spread from their epicenter in California.... Concern about the power picture extends to the top levels of the Bush Administration as it attempts to hammer out a new energy policy." As politicians search for possible solutions to the current crisis, incentives for energy conservation are often mentioned as a possible remedy. A recent Congressional Research Service Issue Brief describes several potential bills. Two create a refundable tax credit for up to 50% …

Throwing Good Money After Bad? Board Connections And Conflicts In Bank Lending, Philip E. Strahan, Randall S. Kroszner Dec 2001

Throwing Good Money After Bad? Board Connections And Conflicts In Bank Lending, Philip E. Strahan, Randall S. Kroszner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper investigates the frequency of connections between banks and non-financial firms through board linkages and whether those connections affect lending and borrowing behavior. Although a board linkages may reduce the costs of information flows between the lender and borrower, a board linkage may generate pressure for special treatment of a borrower not normally justifiable on economic grounds. To address this issue, we first document that banks are heavily involved in the corporate governance network through frequent board linkages. Banks tend to have larger boards with a higher proportion of outside directors than non- financial firms, and bank officer-directors tend …

Ccd Photometry Of The Classic Second-Parameter Globular Clusters M3 And M13, Soo-Chang Rey, Suk-Jin Yoon, Young-Wook Lee, Brian Chaboyer, Ata Sarajedini Dec 2001

Ccd Photometry Of The Classic Second-Parameter Globular Clusters M3 And M13, Soo-Chang Rey, Suk-Jin Yoon, Young-Wook Lee, Brian Chaboyer, Ata Sarajedini

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present high-precision V, B-V color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for the classic second-parameter globular clusters M3 and M13 from wide-field, deep CCD photometry. The data for the two clusters were obtained during the same photometric nights with the same instrument, allowing us to determine accurate relative ages. Based on a differential comparison of the CMDs using the Δ(B-V) method, an age difference of 1.7 ± 0.7 Gyr is obtained between these two clusters. We compare this result with our updated horizontal-branch (HB) population models, which confirm that the observed age difference can produce the …

Dual Heuristic Programming For Fuzzy Control, George G. Lendaris, Thaddeus T. Shannon, Larry J. Schultz, Steven Hutsell, Alec Rogers

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Overview material for the Special Session (Tuning Fuzzy Controllers Using Adaptive Critic Based Approximate Dynamic Programming) is provided. The Dual Heuristic Programming (DHP) method of Approximate Dynamic Programming is described and used to the design a fuzzy control system. DHP and related techniques have been developed in the neurocontrol context but can be equally productive when used with fuzzy controllers or neuro-fuzzy hybrids. This technique is demonstrated by designing a temperature controller for a simple water bath system. In this example, we take advantage of the TSK model framework to initialize the tunable parameters of our plant model with reasonable …

Memory And The Experience Of Hearing Music, W Jay Dowling, Barbara Tillman, Dan Ayers Dec 2001

Memory And The Experience Of Hearing Music, W Jay Dowling, Barbara Tillman, Dan Ayers

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report five experiments in which listeners heard the beginnings of classical minuets (or similar dances). The phrase in either measures 1-2 or measures 3-4 was selected as a target, tested at the end of the excerpt. A "beep" indicated the test item, which was a continuation of the minuet as written. Test items were targets (repetitions of the selected phrase), similar lures (imitations of targets), or different lures, and occurred after delays of 4-5, 15, or 30 s. We estimated the proportion of correct discriminations of targets from similar lures and targets from different lures. In Experiment 1, …

Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke Dec 2001

Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The European settlers who emigrated to America in the seventeenth century were decidedly patriarchal. Nevertheless, significant cultural differences in expressions of patriarchy among them existed. Specifically, the Dutch of New Netherland defined the gendered roles of women differently than did other European cultures. More than deputy-husbands, but less than full partner, seventeenth-century Dutch women in New Netherland were integral to the survival and promotion of their families' interests and preservation of the colony. English expropriation of New Netherland in 1664 and permanent acquisition in 1674 inaugurate a process of patriarchal acculturation that over time submerged the roles of Dutch women. …

Interactions Among Environmental Drivers: Community Responses To Changing Nutrients And Dissolved Organic Carbon, Jennifer L. Klug, Kathryn L. Cottingham Dec 2001

Interactions Among Environmental Drivers: Community Responses To Changing Nutrients And Dissolved Organic Carbon, Jennifer L. Klug, Kathryn L. Cottingham

Dartmouth Scholarship

Biological communities are frequently exposed to environmental changes that cause measurable responses in properties of the community (hereafter called environmental drivers). Predicting how communities respond to changing environmental drivers is a fundamental goal of ecology. Making predictions, however, can be very difficult, particularly when multiple environmental drivers change simultaneously and there are interactions among the drivers. We investigated the effects of the interaction between changes in nutrient loading and changes in colored dissolved organic matter (measured as dissolved organic carbon, DOC) on the dynamics of phytoplankton communities over a 7‐yr period. In 1991, Long Lake, a small seepage lake in …

Western Culture And The Ambiguous Legacies Of The Pig, Benton Jay Komins Dec 2001

Western Culture And The Ambiguous Legacies Of The Pig, Benton Jay Komins

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Western Culture and the Ambiguous Legacies of the Pig," Benton Jay Komins provides a cultural lineage of the pig by the example and reading of Piggies by the Beatles. Komins observes that Piggies enacts the possibilities of the ubiquitous pig in Western culture by juxtaposing swinish antics with interpretations of limitation and heartbreak thereby forcing listeners to blur the distinctions between struggle, unrequited love, and boorishness. Komins continues his discussion by locating this juxtaposition within the Western pantheon of real, metaphorical, and imaginary animals, where the pig is noted to have obsessively endured. Komins argues that through …

Aimé Césaire And Gestures Toward The Universal, Gary Leising Dec 2001

Aimé Césaire And Gestures Toward The Universal, Gary Leising

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Aimé Césaire and Gestures toward the Universal," Gary Leising argues that Césaire's Notebook of a Return to the Native Land presents a speaker struggling with his own identity, torn between a double consciousness of his black African heritage and his French-European education. This dichotomy appears in the poem in terms of his perceptions of his ancestry as well as in symbols of the masculine and feminine in the surrounding landscape. For the speaker, the African appears as the "real" around him, while the European is an "absent presence," and he confronts the two at the poem's climax, …

Avoiding Pitfalls In Administrative Internships, M. Scott Korpak Dec 2001

Avoiding Pitfalls In Administrative Internships, M. Scott Korpak

Masters Theses

Educational leaders and researchers are concerned about the number of qualified candidates for school leadership positions (Tracy, G. & Weaver, C. 2000). In response to this need, many school districts are promoting administrative internships. Through this project, the author sought to learn more about the following challenges: What does the current research literature say about administrative internships, and what are some of the common pitfalls that administrative interns face, especially in the area of journal preparation and the corresponding guidelines of the Human Subject Institutional Review Board.

Through this project, recommendations were formulated for future interns and their advisors. Common …
