El Indiano En Tres Comedias De Lope De Vega, Jaime Martínez Tolentino Dec 2001

El Indiano En Tres Comedias De Lope De Vega, Jaime Martínez Tolentino

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

The Isolation Of America: The Ideological And Poetic Purpose Of Misrepresentation, Robert M. Shannon Dec 2001

The Isolation Of America: The Ideological And Poetic Purpose Of Misrepresentation, Robert M. Shannon

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Lo Peor De Ambos Mundos: Dos Entremeses Americanos De Luis Quiñones De Benavente Y Vicente Suárez De Deza, Héctor Brioso Santos Dec 2001

Lo Peor De Ambos Mundos: Dos Entremeses Americanos De Luis Quiñones De Benavente Y Vicente Suárez De Deza, Héctor Brioso Santos

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

La Imagen De Las Indias En El Teatro Breve Del Siglo De Oro, Héctor Urzáiz Tortajada Dec 2001

La Imagen De Las Indias En El Teatro Breve Del Siglo De Oro, Héctor Urzáiz Tortajada

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Andanzas Americanas De Pedro Ordóñez De Ceballos En Dos Comedias Del Siglo De Oro, Miguel Zugasti Dec 2001

Andanzas Americanas De Pedro Ordóñez De Ceballos En Dos Comedias Del Siglo De Oro, Miguel Zugasti

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Ezra Pound's Comparative Poetics, Naikan Tao Dec 2001

Ezra Pound's Comparative Poetics, Naikan Tao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Ezra Pound's Comparative Poetics," Naikan Tao concentrates on Pound's theories regarding comparison and examines the significance of his comparative studies to the formulation of his poetics, an aspect that has not been sufficiently investigated. On the basis of Pound's work, Tao observes that the conception of comparison Pound shaped through his comparative studies is the internal principle that governs the presentation of details and particulars, the method Pound advocated as a reader-oriented approach to truth and as an efficient, self-reliant means to avoid others' generalization and discursive presentation. Pound's view of comparison as an epistemological norm -- …

Adversary Use Of Nbc Weapons: A Neglected Challenge, John F. Reichart Dec 2001

Adversary Use Of Nbc Weapons: A Neglected Challenge, John F. Reichart

Strategic Forums

Understanding has evolved in the last decade about how an adversary might use nuclear, radiological, biological, or chemical weapons against the United States. Increasingly, America is concluding that potential adversaries view these not as “weapons of last resort” but rather as tactically and strategically useful. The United States can expect their use early in a conflict as well as throughout the extended battlefield, including on U.S. territory itself.

Serving The Homeless: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Homeless Shelter Services, Robert L. Fischer Dec 2001

Serving The Homeless: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Homeless Shelter Services, Robert L. Fischer

Faculty Scholarship

The effects of homeless assistance services at the local level are tremendously difficult to ascertain. In this study, a four-month sample of homeless persons served by a local homeless shelter and case management program were contacted nine to eleven months after receiving services. The findings suggest that the program had some initial success in assisting the homeless clients to locate housing within the first year after leaving the shelter. However, the housing costs paid by these formerly homeless were quite high, with nearly three-quarters of them spending forty percent or more of their income on housing.

Behavioral Changes In Adult C57bl/6j Mice Following Prenatal Exposure To Ethanol., Kevin Wade Nunley Dec 2001

Behavioral Changes In Adult C57bl/6j Mice Following Prenatal Exposure To Ethanol., Kevin Wade Nunley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) labels children with physical, mental and behavioral deficits exposed to alcohol in utero. Current research indicates that timing of alcohol exposure of the embryo/fetus is a critical determinant of the behavioral deficits associated with FAS. This study represents a model for binge drinking, in which C57BL mouse embryos were exposed to alcohol during 2 separate critical periods of brain development, gestational day (GD) 7 or 8. As adults, the offspring were tested to determine if loco-motor activity and emotional reaction to a novel environment had been affected. Significant differences due to treatment and sex were …

The National Domestic Workers Union And The War On Poverty, Elizabeth Beck Dec 2001

The National Domestic Workers Union And The War On Poverty, Elizabeth Beck

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article explores values, strategies, and tensions found within the War on Poverty and examines a War on Poverty-supported initiative, the National Domestic Workers Union (NDWU). The article makes the argument that the NDWU is illustrative of the War on Poverty in that each held structurally based descriptions of poverty and individually based prescriptions. The article explores the relationship of domestic service to the institutions of racism, classism, and sexism and how the ND WU strategies of training, service, and, advocacy-like those of the War on Poverty-sought to address the needs of individual domestic workers while circumventing larger and more …

Concepts, Measurement And Causes Of Poverty, D. O. Ajakaiye, V. A. Adeyeye Dec 2001

Concepts, Measurement And Causes Of Poverty, D. O. Ajakaiye, V. A. Adeyeye

Economic and Financial Review

Thoughts. on appropriate conceptualization, measurement and accurate characterization of determinants of poverty has a long history. From analytical perspective, thinking about poverty can be traced back at least to the codification of poor laws in medieval England, through to the pioneering empirical studies, at the tum of the century, by Booth in London and by Rowntree in York. Rowntree's study, published in 1901, was the first to develop a poverty standard for individual families, based on estimates of nutritional and other requirements. In the 1960s, the main focus of poverty debate was on the level of income, reflected in macro …

Modified Adaptive Algorithms, Yingkang Hu, Kirill A. Kopotun, Xiang Ming Yu

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

It is well known that the adaptive algorithm is simple and easy to program but the results are not fully competitive with other nonlinear methods such as free knot spline approximation. We modify the algorithm to take full advantages of nonlinear approximation. The new algorithms have the same approximation order as other nonlinear methods, which is proved by characterizing their approximation spaces. One of our algorithms is implemented on the computer, with numerical results illustrated by figures and tables.

"Black Behind The Ears" — And Up Front Too? Dominicans In The Black Mosaic, Ginetta Candelario Dr Dec 2001

"Black Behind The Ears" — And Up Front Too? Dominicans In The Black Mosaic, Ginetta Candelario Dr

Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article considers the formation and representation of Washington, D.C.'s Dominican community in the Anacostia Museum's 1994 -1995 exhibit, Black Mosaic: Community, Race and Ethnicity Among Black Immigrants in D.C. The exhibit successfully pointed to the extensive historical presence of African Diaspora peoples in Latin America and explored the development of subsequent Diaspora from those communities into Washington, D.C. The case of Dominican immigrants to D.C., however, illustrates the continued privileging of a U.S.- or Anglo-centric ideation of African-American history and identity. I argue that a more accurate and politically useful formulation would call for an understanding that the African …

Venture Capitalists And Closely Held Ipos: Lessons For Family-Controlled Firms, Joseph H. Astrachan, Daniel L. Mcconaughy Dec 2001

Venture Capitalists And Closely Held Ipos: Lessons For Family-Controlled Firms, Joseph H. Astrachan, Daniel L. Mcconaughy

Faculty Articles

This study examines how the presence of venture capitalists (VCs) in closely held IPOs relates to their performance. It also identifies other factors that are related to the performance of closely held IPOs. Closely held firms in this study had an average of 88% insider ownership before the IPO. In general, we find that closely held IPOs benefit from associations with VCs. This finding suggests that VCs' outside expertise and connections are valuable assets. Because it takes time for VCs to effect changes and because beneficial changes generally occur gradually, firms contemplating IPOs must plan well in advance to maximize …

Poverty Reduction In Nigeria: The Way Forward, Mike I. Obadan Dec 2001

Poverty Reduction In Nigeria: The Way Forward, Mike I. Obadan

Economic and Financial Review

The description of Nigeria as a paradox by the World Bank (1996) bas continued to be confirmed by events and official statistics in the country. The paradox is - that the poverty level in Nigeria contradicts the country's immense wealth. Among other things, the country is enormously endowed with human, agricultural, petroleum, gas, and large untapped solid mineral resources. Particularly worrisome is that the country earned over USS300 billion from one resource - petroleum - during the last three decades of the twentieth century. But rather than record remarkable progress in national socio-economic development, Nigeria retrogressed to become one of …
