The Bioenergetics And Behaviour Of The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) When Feeding On A Copper Contaminated Diet, Hamish Alistair Campbell Jan 2001

The Bioenergetics And Behaviour Of The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) When Feeding On A Copper Contaminated Diet, Hamish Alistair Campbell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The long-term effects of sub-lethal dietary Cu-exposure were investigated in relation to consequential energy shifts and resultant locomotory adaptation in 0. mykiss. This study represents the first to attempt to quantify the physiological cost of dietary heavy-metal exposure, the timing and extent of daily behavioural adaptation and resultant significance, in terms of ecologically important behaviours to the fish. Two long-term (2 & 3 months) dietary exposures of 730 mg Cu kgˉ¹ mg d.w. feed showed exposed fish to have a 3-fold increase in liver [Cu] and 10-fold increase in intestinal [Cu] compared to control fish. Consequently exposed fish elicited a …

Physiological And Biochemical Factors Affecting Carotenoid Utilization In Salmonid Fish, Gregory Ian Page Jan 2001

Physiological And Biochemical Factors Affecting Carotenoid Utilization In Salmonid Fish, Gregory Ian Page

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Carotenoid utilization in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) has been investigated with respect to tissue distribution of carotenoids and the role of the liver on the bioavailability of the lipid soluble carotenoids, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin. Species-specific and tissue-specific accumulations were noted for astaxanthin and canthaxanthin in the rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon, possibly indicating fundamental differences in their utilization in these species. The liver and the kidney were revealed to be the major tissues involved in carotenoid metabolism in both rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon. Apparent digestibilities (-96% and -30% for rainbow trout and …

A Low-Cost Intervention For Cleaner Drinking Water In Karachi, Pakistan, S Luby, M Agboatwalla, A Raza, J Sobel, E Mintz, K Baier, M Rahbar, S Qureshi, Rumina Hassan, F Ghouri

Community Health Sciences

Objective: To pilot test an inexpensive, home-based water decontamination and storage system in a low-income neighborhood of Karachi. Methods: Fifty households received a 20-L plastic water storage vessel with a high-quality spout and a regular supply of diluted hypochlorite solution. Twenty-five control households were recruited. Water samples were collected at baseline and during unannounced follow-up visits 1, 3, 6, and 10 weeks later. Results: Baseline drinking water samples among intervention households were contaminated with a mean 9397 colony-forming units (cfu)/100 mL of thermotolerant coliforms compared with a mean 10,990 cfu/100 mL from controls. After intervention the mean concentration of thermotolerant coliforms decreased …

Dynamics Of The Fragmentation Of D2 By Fast Protons And Slow Highly Charged Xe26+, I. Ali, Robert D. Dubois, C. L. Cocke, S. Hagmann, C. R. Feeler, Ronald E. Olson Jan 2001

Dynamics Of The Fragmentation Of D2 By Fast Protons And Slow Highly Charged Xe26+, I. Ali, Robert D. Dubois, C. L. Cocke, S. Hagmann, C. R. Feeler, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy, combined with a multihit detector system, the full momentum vectors of both fragment ions produced by fragmentation of D2 by fast 50-kV protons and slow (9.56–0.191 keV/u) keV/u! Xe26+ ions have been measured. The data are kinematically complete and make it possible to separate the laboratory momentum of the center of mass of the molecule from the momentum of each fragment in the center-of-mass system of the molecule. Using this separation, we find that, for higher collision velocities, the overall reaction can be described as double-electron capture, followed in a second and separate step …

Magnetization And Heat Capacity Of R1/3sr2/3feo3-Δ (R = La And Pr), V. P.S. Awana, M. Karppinen, H. Yamauchi, S. K. Malik, William B. Yelon, Apurva Mehta, A. V. Narlikar Jan 2001

Results of magnetization and heat capacity (CP) measurements are presented for R1/3Sr2/3FeO3-δ compounds with R = La and Pr. The change in entropy (ΔS) near the magnetic transition amounts to only 15% of the theoretically expected value for the Fe3+ or Fe5+ spins magnetic ordering. The lower value of ΔS is explained on the basis of reported Mössbauer studies, which revealed a substantial amount of nonmagnetic Fe4+ in the compound across the magnetic transition. The CP peak height across the magnetic transition increases substantially after annealing the …

The electronic and magnetic properties of the ABO3 type manganite's (A = rare earth, B = Mn) depend sensitively on the ratio of divalent and trivalent atoms on the A sublattice. The substitution of rare-earth by Ca or Sr not only affects the total valence, but also the lattice spacing, which, in turn may affect the structure and magnetic ordering temperature. If these compounds are synthesized with less than stoichiometric amounts of the A site constituents, (relative to the Mn content), three possible outcomes may be considered: a) single phase materials with vacancies on the A sublattice may be formed, …

A Neutron Diffraction Study Of The Deuterium Site Occupancy In Nd5fe17d15.5, Z. Chu, William B. Yelon, R. K. Murakami, P. S.M. Da Silva, V. Villas-Boas, F. P. Missell

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The intermetallic compound Nd5Fe17 has potentially important magnetic properties and is being investigated as a possible permanent magnetic material. As with many other rare-earth transition metal compounds, this phase can absorb significant quantities of H(D) and lesser amounts of N. Gravimetric measurement indicate that ∼14-16H(D) atoms can be absorbed per formula unit leading to roughly a 20% increase in saturation magnetization and Curie temperature. We have carried out powder neutron diffraction studies to determine the location of D atoms in a sample of Nd5Fe17 containing approximately 15.5D/f.u. The large, complex unit cell of Nd …

Long-Term Working Memory In Text Production, Ronald Thomas Kellogg Jan 2001

Long-Term Working Memory In Text Production, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In reading and other high-level cognitive tasks, Ericsson and Kintsch (1995) proposed that the limited capacity of short-term working memory (STWM) is supplemented by long- term working memory (LTWM) for individuals with a high degree of domain-specific knowledge. In Experiment 1, college students (N = 80) wrote persuasive and narrative texts concerning baseball; domain-specific knowledge about baseball and verbal ability was assessed. The results showed that verbal ability and domain-specific knowledge independently affected writing skill, supporting the view that literacy depends on both knowledge sources and refuting one argument raised in support of the LTWM hypothesis. Experiment 2 (N = …

A Comparison Of Health Curricula At Selected Rural Iowa Secondary Schools To A Recommended Model, Lowen Paul Anderson Jan 2001

A Comparison Of Health Curricula At Selected Rural Iowa Secondary Schools To A Recommended Model, Lowen Paul Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

The importance of educating the youth of today about healthy lifestyles cannot be overstated. In the United States the top four causes of death in 1998, each lifestyle-related, were (1) heart disease - 724,859 deaths, (2) cancer - 541,532, (3) stroke - 158,448, and (4) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - 112,584, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2001 ). Fifteen years ago Kolbe (1986) identified the same top three leading causes of death and reported that they develop mainly from lifestyle habits.

The first encounter youth usually have with formal health education is in school. …

The Effect Of Moderate +Gz On Cervical Muscle Strength Of Raaf Trainee Pilots Flying Pc-9 Aircraft, Elissa Jane Burton Jan 2001

The Effect Of Moderate +Gz On Cervical Muscle Strength Of Raaf Trainee Pilots Flying Pc-9 Aircraft, Elissa Jane Burton

Theses : Honours

External stimulus/loading initiates adaptations within skeletal muscle. Whilst performing flying manoeuvres under +Gz it has been previously found that the cervical area has the highest loading. The purpose of this study was to examine cervical muscle response to moderate +Gz force (+4-6Gz) loading generated during RAAF pilot training. Cervical muscle strength was monitored in nine RAAF pilots completing an eight-month flight training course and ten controls matched for gender, age, height and weight. Cervical muscle strength and range of movement were measured at baseline and at eight months using the Multi-Cervical Rehabilitation Unit (Hanoun, Canada). Also measured, using EMG, was …

The Effect Of The Moon Phase On The Daily Catch Rate Of King, Tiger And Endeavour Prawns In The Shark Bay And Exmouth Gulf Fisheries, Tenniel Harman Jan 2001

The Effect Of The Moon Phase On The Daily Catch Rate Of King, Tiger And Endeavour Prawns In The Shark Bay And Exmouth Gulf Fisheries, Tenniel Harman

Theses : Honours

Two of the major commercial prawn fisheries in Western Australia arc located in Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay. Prawn fishing is the third most valuable fishing industry in WA, producing an annual income of $62 million. These two fishing regions are considered fully exploited (Fisheries WA Home Page) and careful management is needed to produce and maintain them as sustainable fisheries. The Western Australian Marine Research Laboratories have developed detailed computer models which estimate the stock abundance of the prawn fisheries. This provides information on what sort of restrictions should be made to maintain a stainable fishery. The impact of …

The Wto And The Rights Of The Individual, Steve Charnovitz Jan 2001

The Wto And The Rights Of The Individual, Steve Charnovitz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization (WTO) is silent regarding its relationship to the individual. One might presume that an international organization set up to emancipate trade could have no purpose other than upholding trading rights of private actors. But the WTO was not established to achieve "free trade". That goal is absent from the Marrakesh Agreement. Instead, the goals of the Agreement are "reciprocal and mutually advantageous arrangements directed to the substantial reduction of tariffs and other barriers to trade" and the "elimination of discriminatory treatment in international trade relations". The term "reciprocal arrangements" makes clear that …

Relationships Of Stemborer Damage And Plant Physical Conditions To Maize Yield In A Semi-Arid Zone Of Eastern Kenya, Josephine Moraa Songa, Zhou Guofa, William Allan Overholt Jan 2001

Relationships Of Stemborer Damage And Plant Physical Conditions To Maize Yield In A Semi-Arid Zone Of Eastern Kenya, Josephine Moraa Songa, Zhou Guofa, William Allan Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A field survey on maize stemborers, stemborer damage, maize plant physical conditions, and maize yield was conducted in eastern Kenya under natural conditions. Chilo partellus was the dominant stemborer accounting for 89.5 % of all borers. Stemborer damage greatly reduced maize yield, with tunnel lengths greater than 20 cm causing a 40 % reduction of potential yield. A 33 % yield loss was found in plants with more than one stemborer exit hole. Each stemborer (at harvest time) was correlated with a 8-10 % yield loss. Good plant physical characteristics significantly increased grain yield. Principle component analysis showed that stemborer …

Polymorphism For Wolbachia Infections In Eastern And Southern African Cotesia Sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Populations, Adele J. Ngi-Song, Moses B. Mochiah Jan 2001

Polymorphism For Wolbachia Infections In Eastern And Southern African Cotesia Sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Populations, Adele J. Ngi-Song, Moses B. Mochiah

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an indigenous, gregarious, larval endo/parasitoid which is widely distributed in Africa and attacks mid- to late instars of stemborers. There is renewed interest in using Co. sesamiae for biological control to reduce the problems caused by stemborers. However, Wolbachia sp., a bacterial symbiont of some populations of Co. sesamiae, poses some threat to the successful use of the parasitoid for stemborer control. This bacterium's common effect is cytoplasmic incompatibility, between infected males and uninfected females. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were carried out on parasitoid samples collected from 5 locations in Kenya and 8 …

Synthesis In Trial Procedures? The Experience Of The International Criminal Tribunals, Mark Findlay Jan 2001

Synthesis In Trial Procedures? The Experience Of The International Criminal Tribunals, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Critical to analysing the recent synthesis of criminal trialprocedures is an understanding of the internationalisation of criminal law andprocedure. As well as the creation of international tribunals to investigateand try crimes of world significance, there is emerging an internationaljurisprudence on criminal law (and procedural hybrids to support and developthis) which require integrated analysis.

A Bayesian Decision Approach For Sample Size Determination In Phase Ii Trials, Denis H. Y. Leung, You-Gan Wang Jan 2001

A Bayesian Decision Approach For Sample Size Determination In Phase Ii Trials, Denis H. Y. Leung, You-Gan Wang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Stallard (1998, Biometrics54, 279–294) recently used Bayesian decision theory for sample-size determination in phase II trials. His design maximizes the expected financial gains in the development of a new treatment. However, it results in a very high probability (0.65) of recommending an ineffective treatment for phase III testing. On the other hand, the expected gain using his design is more than 10 times that of a design that tightly controls the false positive error (Thall and Simon, 1994, Biometrics50, 337–349). Stallard's design maximizes the expected gain per phase II trial, but it does not maximize the rate of gain or …

Statistical Methods For Clinical Studies In The Presence Of Surrogate End Points, Denis H. Y. Leung Jan 2001

Statistical Methods For Clinical Studies In The Presence Of Surrogate End Points, Denis H. Y. Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

The use of surrogate end points has become increasingly common in medical and biological research. This is primarily because, in many studies, the primary end point of interest is too expensive or too difficult to obtain. There is now a large volume of statistical methods for analysing studies with surrogate end point data. However, to our knowledge, there has not been a comprehensive review of these methods to date. This paper reviews some existing methods and summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of each method. It also discusses the assumptions that are made by each method and critiques how likely these …

Do Stock Returns Follow A Finite Variance Distribution?, Q. M. Shao, H. Yu, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we propose a test statistic to discriminate between models with finite variance and models with infinite variance. The test statistic is the ratio of the sample standard deviation and the sample interquartile range. Both asymptotic and finite sample properties of the test statistic are discussed. We show that the test has good power properties against infinite-variance distributions and has small size distortions in finite samples. The statistic is applied to compare the competing models for S&P 500 index returns. Our test cannot reject most distributions with finite variance for both a pre-crash sample and a post-crash sample, …

An Empirical Investigation Into Long- And Short-Term Indebtedness, Hing-Man Leung Jan 2001

An Empirical Investigation Into Long- And Short-Term Indebtedness, Hing-Man Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

The external debt position of a country often lies at the heart of her financial crisis. While it is well-known that indebtedness and in particular a surge in short-term debts often precipitate a debt crisis that is often made worse by runs on a country’s foreign exchange, the reasons why a country takes a particular debt position is rarely formally explained. This paper investigates the long-term determinants of international indebtedness, the time-rates of change of indebtedness, and a nation’s short- to long term debt ratio. The data set used is the World Data CD-ROM. Six potential explanatory variables are: size, …

Red Light, Green Light: Has China Achieved Its Goals Through The 2000 Internet Regulations?, Clara Liang

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In the mid-1990s, when the Internet began to burgeon in China, many thought that the rule of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) would finally come to an end. The combination of foreign capital and trans-border information exchange promised a potential influx of democratic ideas and ideals. The CCP responded with both physical and regulatory limits on the use of the Internet by the Chinese people. Some commentators characterized these limits as feeble attempts by the CCP to control a nebulous medium. Others viewed the limits as ineffective steps by the government to become a highly developed authoritarian state.
