An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock
An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock
Economics: Faculty Publications
U.S. states during the 1977-1986 business cycle are found to have small but significant technical inefficiency in the private sector. Inefficiency is influenced by several factors, including prior economic performance, location, Hicks labor augmenting technical progress in the manufacturing sector in an earlier 1970s period, college graduation, and income inequality. The existence of a monetary channel, urban agglomeration, and a high school diploma "sheepskin" effect for improved technical efficiency are rejected. Results from earlier studies using noneconometric methods to measure technical efficiency are independently confirmed, indicating that interstate technical inefficiency exists and can be measured using both parametric and nonparametric …
Two Views Of The River: A Critique Of The Liberal Defense Of Affirmative Action, Charles R. Lawrence Iii
Two Views Of The River: A Critique Of The Liberal Defense Of Affirmative Action, Charles R. Lawrence Iii
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In response to the attack on affirmative action at educational institutions, the argument that the benefits of diversity necessitate keeping affirmative action has emerged as the dominant defense of race-conscious admissions policies. Describing this argument as the “liberal defense of affirmative action,” Professor Lawrence critiques the liberal defense because it fails to challenge the manner in which traditional standards of merit perpetuate race and class privilege, and pushes aside more radically, substantive defenses of affirmative action which articulate the need to remedy past and ongoing discrimination. While recognizing the difficulties and ambivalence inherent in advancing a new vision for defending …

Spontaneous, Non-Aqueous Electrochemical Deposition Of Copper And Palladium On Al And Al(Cu) Thin Films, R. Fang, H. Gu, Matthew O'Keefe, Thomas J. O'Keefe, W. S. Shih, K. D. Leedy, R. Cortez
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Copper and palladium seed layers have been successfully deposited from organic solutions onto patterned and unpatterned pure aluminum and Al (0.5%Cu) thin films using an immersion displacement process. The reaction occurs at ambient temperature and pressure by a spontaneous electrochemical mechanism. Copper and palladium deposition using the organic solution was studied as a function of reaction time and Cu or Pd concentration in the solution. It was found that both time and the initial ionic metal concentration significantly influence deposit morphology, particle size and shape, and adherence. Nucleation of Cu or Pd sub-micron particles on both Al and Al (Cu) …

We studied the exclusive reaction ep → e' p' ᵠ using the ᵠ →K+K- decay mode. The data were collected using a 4.2 GeV incident electron beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Our experiment covers the range in Q2 from 0.7 to 2.2 GeV2and W from 2.0 to 2.6 GeV. Taken together with all previous data, we find a consistent picture of ᵠ production on the proton. Our measurement shows the expected decrease of the t slope with the vector-meson formation time c Δ t …

Development Of A Workshop To Prepare Nursing Students At Northwest College To Communicate Effectively With Low Literate Patients, Leslie A. Oja
Development Of A Workshop To Prepare Nursing Students At Northwest College To Communicate Effectively With Low Literate Patients, Leslie A. Oja
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The problem existing at Northwest College was effective communication with low literate patients was not integrated into the nursing curriculum. The purpose of this study was the development of a workshop for nursing students to learn effective communication skills with low literate patients. There were six research questions. First, "What is the best model for developing a workshop including the assessment of educational needs?" Second, what are the components of a needs assessment for low literate patients? Third, what content is needed for developing a workshop? Fourth, what format will be needed for a workshop? Fifth, what is the best …

Team Player Styles, Team Design Variables And Team Work Effectiveness In Egypt, Ghada Awed Hassan El-Kot
Plymouth Business School Theses
The literature has revealed few studies of management in Arab countries in general and particularly in Egypt. Many Egyptian organisations implemented the team concept a number of years ago, however, there do not appear to be any studies investigating team work effectiveness in Egypt. The literature review and the findings of a pilot study emphasised the need for empirical research in team work in Egypt. Team effectiveness models are examined in order to identify the factors that may enhance team effectiveness in Egypt. Team behavioural models are also examined to identify the importance of balanced team membership and its relationship …

Introducing Integrated Performance Measurement Into Small And Medium Sized Enterprises, Melanie Hudson
Plymouth Business School Theses
The thesis extends current knowledge and understanding of integrated performance measurement (PM) development into the context of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The research builds on existing knowledge of integrated PM development approaches and identifies the context-specific factors which affect its introduction into SMEs. These are used to design, develop and validate a new, continuous improvement based approach for the development of integrated PM systems, which is specifically designed for use in SMEs. First, a conceptual model of criteria for integrated PM development is synthesised from the literature and the characteristics of SMEs are established. An evaluation of current …

Racial discrimination in any form and in any degree has no justifiable part whatever in our democrati way of life. It is unattractive in any setting but it is utterly revolting among a free people who have embraced the principles set forth in the Constitution of the united States. All residents of this nation are primarily and necessarily a part of the new and distinct civilization of the United States. They must accordingly be treated at all times as the heirs of the American experiment and as entitled to all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.

Technology Infrastructure Supporting Digital Library Developments, Nancy K. Dennis
Technology Infrastructure Supporting Digital Library Developments, Nancy K. Dennis
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
This chapter provides an overview of the technology infrastructure upon which digital libraries are created and accessed. Host servers, system and application software, desktop workstation requirements, interconnecting networks, and the creation and conversion of data, are summarized. A case study of the Online Archive of New Mexico is discussed where more than one thousand finding aids to manuscript and oral history collections from four institutions were converted to SGML-formatted documents according to the EAD standards.
