The East Greenwich Greenway Plan: A Strategy For The Commons, Greg S. Harris Jan 2001

The East Greenwich Greenway Plan: A Strategy For The Commons, Greg S. Harris

Open Access Master's Theses

This Greenway Plan has been prepared in response to increasing development pressure and a heightened local awareness of the need to conserve East Greenwich's open spaces, protect natural resources and water supplies, increase opportunities for passive outdoor recreation, and protect the town's historic rural and scenic characteristics. Changes are recommended to the Zoning Ordinance and the Development and Subdivision Review Regulations that will enhance the town's ability to preserve open space, including farms and ecologically significant corridors, and to incorporate interconnected trail networks between new subdivisions. Rapid changes to the town's character caused by residential growth have led to escalating …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

During the past 20 years (1982-2001) we have studied the biology, occurrence and distribution of LeConte's (Brazilian) free-tailed bat, Tadarida brasiliensis cynocephala, in Arkansas. Colonies and individuals were reported from man made structures only. Four new county records have been documented since 1988, extending the range from the central part of the state to Arkansas's northern-most tier of counties. Numerous nuisance maternity colonies were investigated during exclusion activities and one, year-round colony provided the majority of reproductive data. A total of 152 free-tailed bats was submitted to the Arkansas Department of Health Rabies Laboratory (1982-2001); most during February through April, …

Middle-Ear Function With Tympanic-Membrane Perforations. I. Measurements And Mechanisms, Susan E. Voss, John J. Rosowski, Saumil N. Merchant, William T. Peake

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Sound transmission through ears with tympanic-membrane ~TM! perforations is not well understood. Here, measurements on human-cadaver ears are reported that describe sound transmission through the middle ear with experimentally produced perforations, which range from 0.5 to 5.0 mm in diameter. Three response variables were measured with acoustic stimulation at the TM: stapes velocity, middle-ear cavity sound pressure, and acoustic impedance at the TM. The stapes-velocity measurements show that perforations cause frequency-dependent losses; at low frequencies losses are largest and increase as perforation size increases. Measurements of middle-ear cavity pressure coupled with the stapes-velocity measurements indicate that the dominant mechanism for …

Asymmetry And U.S. Military Strategy: Definition, Background, And Strategic Concepts, Douglas V. Johnson Dr., Steven Metz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This report gives a simple and comprehensive definition of strategic asymmetry reflecting the need for military doctrine which transcends today's specific issues. The authors assess the strategic situation of the United States in terms of positive and negative asymmetry and offer five strategic concepts as part of the response to asymmetry: maximum conceptual and organizational adaptability, focused intelligence, minimal vulnerability, full spectrum precision, and an integrated homeland security strategy.

Xenon Excimer Emission From Pulsed Microhollow Cathode Discharges, M. Moselhy, R. H. Stark, K. H. Schoenbach, U. Kogelschatz Jan 2001

Xenon Excimer Emission From Pulsed Microhollow Cathode Discharges, M. Moselhy, R. H. Stark, K. H. Schoenbach, U. Kogelschatz

Bioelectrics Publications

By applying electrical pulses of 20 ns duration to xenon microplasmas, generated by direct current microhollow cathode discharges, we were able to increase the xenon excimer emission by more than an order of magnitude over direct current discharge excimer emission. For pulsed voltages in excess of 500 V, the optical power at 172 nm was found to increase exponentially with voltage. Largest values obtained were 2.75 W of vacuum-ultraviolet optical power emitted from a single microhollow cathode discharge in 400 Torr xenon with a 750 V pulse applied to a discharge. Highest radiative emittance was 15.2 W/cm2. The …

Class Dismissed: The Conservative Class Action Revolution Of The Texas Supreme Court., Russell T. Brown Jan 2001

Class Dismissed: The Conservative Class Action Revolution Of The Texas Supreme Court., Russell T. Brown

St. Mary's Law Journal

Historically, Texas plaintiffs enjoyed tremendous flexibility in gaining certification for class action lawsuits because of a liberal approach employed by Texas trial courts. Because certification assignment occurred early in the judicial proceedings, Texas case law encouraged trial courts to grant certification of a class. Putative classes chose to seek relief in state court because of the state’s lax view regarding class actions, particularly when compared to federal courts. Concerns arose throughout Texas about the growing liberal methodology courts used to evaluate putative classes during certification. Federal influence, state lobbies, and legislative pressure led the Texas judiciary, through application of the …

The Global Governance Of “Good Governance”: Financial Regularization And The Construction Of Transparency And Accountability, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr Jan 2001

The Global Governance Of “Good Governance”: Financial Regularization And The Construction Of Transparency And Accountability, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

“Good governance” has increasingly become political-economic common sense — often articulated in the call for transparency and accountability. But the question is: transparency and accountability to whom and toward what end? This essay examines the normalization of “good governance,” particularly as it is expressed as a financial discourse of corporate governance that gives primacy to the maximization of “shareholder value” and the promotion of “investor confidence” in the capital markets. I argue that this global discourse privileges institutional investors who are empowered to hold all stakeholders accountable to market expectations and valuations. While the discourse is clearly not socially neutral, …

A Small Look At The Big Picture: Linking Geopotential Height Anomalies To Paleofloods On The Snake River, Idaho And Oregon, Gwendolyn Bernitha Rhodes Jan 2001

A Small Look At The Big Picture: Linking Geopotential Height Anomalies To Paleofloods On The Snake River, Idaho And Oregon, Gwendolyn Bernitha Rhodes

All Master's Theses

A combined paleoflood and flood hydroclimatology study on the Snake River in Idaho and Oregon suggests a link between floods and patters of geopotential height anomalies over the North Pacific Ocean. Examination of the paleoflood record in two 4-m (12 ft) tall terraces along the Hells Canyon reach of the Snake River in Idaho and Oregon shows evidence of at least twenty-two late-Holocene extreme floods that occurred approximately 5,000 years. The ages of paleoflood deposits at these sites fall into two time periods, from 5130 ± 40 to 1960 ± 40 yr BP and from 320 ± 40 yr BP …

Gulfstream Aerospace Aircraft Static Position Utility, Mark Eugene Ray Jan 2001

Gulfstream Aerospace Aircraft Static Position Utility, Mark Eugene Ray

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

My research project implements a Java based utility developed for commercial application by Gulfstream Aerospace employees and customers to determine static position data of Gulfstream aircraft. The static position data includes aircraft attitude, nose and main landing gear loads and aircraft ground clearance data.

The previous methods used to obtain this data were a family of spreadsheets. The spreadsheet solution has proven to be awkward and inaccessible for providing the required data. Therefore, Gulfstream Aerospace Management approved the design and implementation of a new aircraft static position utility.

The new utility is identified as the Gulfstream Aircraft Static Position (GASP) …
