Acoustic Imaging Of Sources Located Either External, Internal Or On The Surface Of An Arbitrary Body, Irsan Soemantri Brodjonegoro
Acoustic Imaging Of Sources Located Either External, Internal Or On The Surface Of An Arbitrary Body, Irsan Soemantri Brodjonegoro
Open Access Dissertations
In the present study, a new non-contact remote method is developed to reconstruct the location and amplitude of a harmonic source distribution in a fluid based on the associated acoustic pressure field on a measurement surface which is in contact with the fluid. An inverse or backward projection method based on the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method is utilized to reconstruct the source distribution that created the acoustic pressure field. Point source distributions located above an axisymmetric rigid plane and line source distributions located outside infinite rigid circular and elliptical cylinders are investigated. Numerical results show that the backward projection …
Genealogy Of A State-Engineered “Model Minority”: “Not Quite/Not White” South Asian Americans, Tayyab Mahmud
Genealogy Of A State-Engineered “Model Minority”: “Not Quite/Not White” South Asian Americans, Tayyab Mahmud
Faculty Articles
This is review essay based on Vijay Prashad, The Karma of Brown Folk (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press 2000). It engages the saga of immigration of South Asian to the United States. A primary focus is on the matrix of identity formation within the grammar of imperialism. It explores how modern regimes of power/knowledge constitute racialized subjects. The deployment of the "model minority" discourse is examined as it relates to South Asian Americans. Structures of power and strategies of resistance among South Asian Americans are highlighted and it is argued that building solidarities among all subordinated is the only viable …
Antitrust Divestiture In Network Industries, Howard A. Shelanski, J. Gregory Sidak
Antitrust Divestiture In Network Industries, Howard A. Shelanski, J. Gregory Sidak
University of Chicago Law Review
The landmark Microsoft case raises challenging questions concerning antitrust remedies. In this Article, we propose a framework for assessing the costs and benefits of different remedies, particularly divestiture, in monopolization cases involving network industries. Our approach can assist a court or enforcement agency not only in analyzing the welfare effects of divestiture, but also in choosing more generally among alternative kinds of remedies. The framework would, for example, apply to a court's choice between damages and injunctive remedies or between behavioral injunctions and structural injunctions. After developing our framework, we apply it to the divestiture proposals made by the government …
The Cycles Of Statutory Interpretation, Adrian Vermeule
The Cycles Of Statutory Interpretation, Adrian Vermeule
University of Chicago Law Review
This Article advances an explanation of interpretive change--the fact that the Supreme Court frequently changes the nominal formulation of its rules for statutory interpretation, and to some degree changes its actual interpretive practice as well. The prevailing styles of explanation attribute interpretive change to exogenous shocks such as a change in the party composition of the legislature or a string of judicial appointments. The Article criticizes the exogenous explanatory style on methodological grounds, and advances an alternative model that attributes interpretive change to endogenous shifts in the expectations of actors in the interpretive system. In particular, the Article develops a …

Moral Nuisances, John Copeland Nagle
Moral Nuisances, John Copeland Nagle
Journal Articles
Nuisance law provides a remedy for activities that substantially interfere with the use and enjoyment of one's land. Most nuisance cases today involve environmental pollution or unwanted noises, sights, or smells. Historically, though, nuisance law had a much broader application that regulated brothels, saloons, and gambling parlors - what I call moral nuisances.
I articulate a theory of moral nuisances that applies when (1) a substantial and legally cognizable interference with a landowner's use or enjoyment of his or her land is caused by (2) an action that is regarded as immoral by a reasonable person within the community (3) …
The Effect Of Sesamoid Mobilization And Flexor Hallucis Strengthening On Reducing Pain And Improving Function In The Great Toe, Jennifer Shamus
The Effect Of Sesamoid Mobilization And Flexor Hallucis Strengthening On Reducing Pain And Improving Function In The Great Toe, Jennifer Shamus
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of standard physical therapy when combined with sesamoid mobilization, flexor hallucis strengthening and gait training for reducing pain and increasing function in the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ) in persons with functional hallux limitus. Sprains of the first MPJ are common in athletics. Push off, forward drive and running can be significantly impaired after this injury. More importantly, MPJ sprains can also result in persistent pain and loss of range of motion. Given the debilitating nature of this injury, it is important to determine the most effective treatment for hallux limitus. …
Lochner, Liquor, And Longshoremen: A Puzzle In Progressive Era Federalism, Barry Cushman
Lochner, Liquor, And Longshoremen: A Puzzle In Progressive Era Federalism, Barry Cushman
Journal Articles
In 1890, the Supreme Court shocked and thrilled the civilized world with the announcement that dry states could not prohibit the sale of liquor shipped in from outside the state. So long as the out-of-state goods remained in their "original packages," the Court held they retained their character as interstate commerce subject only to federal regulation. The consequences for the cause of local sobriety were, predictably, catastrophic. The proliferation in temperance territory of "original package saloons," at which one could purchase liquor free from the superintendence of local liquor authorities, was appalling to dry eyes. Members of Congress immediately proposed …
Transforming The Debate: Why We Need To Include Transgender Rights In The Struggles For Sex And Sexual Orientation Equality, Taylor Flynn
Transforming The Debate: Why We Need To Include Transgender Rights In The Struggles For Sex And Sexual Orientation Equality, Taylor Flynn
Faculty Scholarship
The Author observes that sex and sexual orientation equality jurisprudence is premised upon the traditional understanding of "sex" as determined by anatomy at birth. The presumption typically following from this reduction of sex to anatomy is the notion that certain gendered attributes are inherent in biological male- or femaleness. The Author asserts that these erroneous and unduly narrow views significantly hamper courts' ability to address the core of sex and sexual orientation discrimination-hostility based on failure to conform to conventional gender norms. Surveying workplace, public accommodation, asylum, marriage, and custody cases, Flynn explains how conventional jurisprudence fails a wide array …
Internet Property Rights: E-Trespass., John D. Saba Jr.
Internet Property Rights: E-Trespass., John D. Saba Jr.
St. Mary's Law Journal
Plaintiffs whose Internet property rights were violated have depended on the common law tort of trespass to chattels. Plaintiffs in Thrifty-Tel, Inc. v. Bezenek and CompuServe Inc. v. Cyber Promotions, Inc. successfully argued defendants trespassed their chattels. In Thrifty-Tel, defendants hacked into plaintiff’s system to obtain long-distance access codes. The court reasoned that electronic signals were tangible and indirect interference in the form of electronic trespass could support a claim for trespass to chattels. In CompuServe Inc., defendants used plaintiff's internet server to send out mass emails to plaintiff’s clients. The court upheld a permanent injunction holding that electronic signals …

Making Laws Moral: A Defense Of Substantive Canons Of Construction, Andrew C. Spiropoulos
Making Laws Moral: A Defense Of Substantive Canons Of Construction, Andrew C. Spiropoulos
Utah Law Review
Judges play a central, and difficult, role in our regime. The difficulty arises from our expectations for them. Judges, we demand, should both ensure that justice is done and be neutral arbiters of the laws enacted by the people. These two responsibilities are in constant tension, and it is all too easy for judges to emphasize one responsibility at the expense of the other. Judges should be neither mere minions of the legislature nor our Platonic Guardians. We do not need enlightened despots to impose justice upon us or to trick us into doing justice by pretending that they are …

The Design Of Web Sites With Quality User Interface, Amery L. Moultry
Graduate Research Papers
Usability engineering focuses on how well Web sites are structured. Many designers are unaware of the diversity of usability engineering and what it can offer the developer in efforts to produce a usable Web site. Three researchers in the field, Borges, Morales, and Rodriquez (1998), have created a style guide of content, which recommends essentials for user-friendly Web sites. They included in their list Common Look and Feel (CL&F), Information Display, Navigation, and Labels. This research paper goes through the steps it took to create a quality Web site using the style guides of the noted researchers.

Advances In Computer And Information Sciences: From Abacus To Holonic Agents, Tuncer Ören
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The shift of paradigm emphasizing the importance of the ability to process knowledge rather then being knowledgeable is stressed. A taxonomy of knowledge processing tools, machines, or systems is offered. Major possibilities for future achievements that the author would like to underline are listed with emphasis on agent technology, agent-directed simulation, holonic agents, holonic-agent simulation, and contribution of system theories for cognitive abilities such as understanding, learning, adaptation, and anticipation in computerization.
The Temperature Dependence Of Dark Conductivity In Hydrogenated Amorphous Sin_X Films, Hüseyi̇n Tolunay, İlker Ay
The Temperature Dependence Of Dark Conductivity In Hydrogenated Amorphous Sin_X Films, Hüseyi̇n Tolunay, İlker Ay
Turkish Journal of Physics
Thin film samples of hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride with varying nitrogen content were prepared by conventional plasma deposition from a mixture of SiH_4 and NH_3 . The dark conductivity (\sigma_d) of the films have been measured in the temperature range 420 K - 100 K. The conductivity is thermally activated with a single activation energy down to 250 K and conduction is dominated by electrons in extended states. A strong decrease is observed sigma _d when the nitrogen content is increased.

Effect Of Nitriding On Phase Transformations In The Fe-Mn Alloys, K. G. Binnatov, I. I. Ali-Zade, A. O. Mekhrabov
Turkish Journal of Physics
We present results concerning the nitriding effects on phase transformations in Fe -- 40 at. % Mn and Fe -- 50 at. % Mn alloys. These alloys were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer-effect spectroscopy methods at room temperature. Results indicate that, after nitriding, in the absorption spectra of these alloys appears lines with hyperfine field H\sim 330 kOe which corresponds to the field on the ^{57} Fe nuclei in the \alpha -Fe. Annealing of the alloys at 650 ^oC temperature (nitriding temperature) in argon atmosphere do not change the form of the M\\"{o}ssbauer absorption spectra. It appears …

Near The Lewis & Clark Trail, Chad Colin Husted
Near The Lewis & Clark Trail, Chad Colin Husted
LSU Master's Theses
Near the Lewis & Clark Trail is a creative writing thesis that contains two distinct parts. Part one is a short story cycle: a collection of interlinked narratives that together, tell a larger, cohesive story. Many different points of view, narrative techniques, and non-linear time sequences are used in order to provide a pastiche of different voices, points in time, and perspectives, that ultimately form an overall narrative structure. In addition to the stories, there are several fictional documents that are used to separate the work at critical times, and to provide subtext. In between the stories are: a letter …
The Problem Of A Viscoelastic Cylinder Rolling On A Rigid Half-Space, John Murrough Golden, G.A.C. Graham
The Problem Of A Viscoelastic Cylinder Rolling On A Rigid Half-Space, John Murrough Golden, G.A.C. Graham
Articles
The problem of a viscoelastic cylinder rolling on a rigid base, propelled by a line force acting at its centre, is solved in the noninertial approximation. The method used is based on a decomposition of hereditary integrals developed by the authors in previous work, and on the viscoelastic Kolosov-Muskhelishvili equations which are used to generate a Hilbert problem. In this formulation, the problem reduces to a nonsingular integral equation in space and time, which simplifies under steady-state conditions and for exponential decay materials, to algebraic form. There are also two subsidiary conditions.
In the case of a standard linear model, …
