Japanese Women With A U.S. Education: Lives In Japan After A U.S. Sojourn, Yukiko Ebara Jan 2001

Japanese Women With A U.S. Education: Lives In Japan After A U.S. Sojourn, Yukiko Ebara

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to examine Japanese women's experiences, to interpret the data within a feminist and sociological framework, and, finally, to develop a theoretical understanding of Japanese women who have studied in the United States, and returned to Japan. Unlike groups in the majority of earlier studies, these women are neither children of Japanese corporate employees nor their wives. They came to the United States for the sole purpose of pursuing English study or higher education. The research was conducted through qualitative research methods: a survey with open-ended questions via e-mail and telephone interviews. The data were …

Teaching The Origins Controversy: Science, Or Religion, Or Speech?, David K. Dewolf, Stephen C. Meyer, Mark Edward Deforrest Jan 2001

Teaching The Origins Controversy: Science, Or Religion, Or Speech?, David K. Dewolf, Stephen C. Meyer, Mark Edward Deforrest

Utah Law Review

One can hardly imagine a more contentious issue in the American culture wars than the debate over how biological origins should be taught in the public schools. On the one hand, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Center for Science Education, and the American Civil Liberties Union have insisted that any departure from a strictly Darwinian approach to the issue constitutes an attack on science itself, and even an unconstitutional intrusion of religion into the public school science curriculum. On the other hand, many parents and religious activists have long rebelled against what they perceive as a dogmatic attack …

The Right To Genetic Privacy? Are We Unlocking The Secrets Of The Human Genome Only To Risk Insurance And Employment Discrimination?, Nathalie Smith

Utah Law Review

Imagine the following: you are a healthy middle-aged adult. Breast, ovarian, or prostate cancer runs in your family. Knowing of your potential increased susceptibility to these diseases, your physician recommends that you participate in an ongoing, local research project. As your physician explains, the research project, which encourages enrollment of high-risk individuals and their families, bases participation on those with family histories such as yours. Upon enrollment, the research project uses a DNA based genetic test to detect the mutated gene' that increases your likelihood of developing the tested-for disease by eighty percent. Your physician is careful to point out …

Working Across Borders: Global Restructuring And Women's Work, Donna E. Young Jan 2001

Working Across Borders: Global Restructuring And Women's Work, Donna E. Young

Utah Law Review

In the last quarter century, economic globalization has intensified. Multinational corporations have increased their global influence to an astonishing degree. Global restructuring aids corporations in crossing national borders in search of conditions that increase production and profit. Access to cheap, unregulated or underregulated labor is critical to this process. Corporate interests have used domestic and international laws to their benefit. It is essential that women do the same. Immigrants, women, people of color, gays and lesbians, and poor people, are all at a marked disadvantage vis-a-vis multinational corporations and financial institutions. The latter have shaped and benefitted from laws fundamentally …

The Right To Information Self-Determination, Edward J. Eberle Jan 2001

The Right To Information Self-Determination, Edward J. Eberle

Utah Law Review

We have examined how the rise of the computer, and the accompanying information revolution it has triggered, can pose serious threats to human freedom. There is, accordingly, a need to safeguard the inviolability of personhood amidst this ongoing technological revolution. Determining how to respond to this challenge is a major test for the American legal system. At present, the legislative response has been inconsistent and episodic. No farreaching measures have been taken to address the needs of human security and freedom. The debate over what to do continues. Perhaps the specter of Big Brother will spur legislation more protective of …

Dual Heuristic Programming Excitation Neurocontrol For Generators In A Multimachine Power System, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The design of optimal neurocontrollers that replace the conventional automatic voltage regulators for excitation control of turbogenerators in a multimachine power system is presented in this paper. The neurocontroller design is based on dual heuristic programming (DHP), a powerful adaptive critic technique. The feedback variables are completely based on local measurements from the generators. Simulations on a three-machine power system demonstrate that DHP based neurocontrol is much more effective than the conventional PID control for improving dynamic performance and stability of the power grid under small and large disturbances. This paper also shows how to design optimal multiple neurocontrollers for …

Dynamic Re-Optimization Of A Fed-Batch Fermentor Using Adaptive Critic Designs, Donald C. Wunsch, M. S. Iyer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traditionally, fed-batch biochemical process optimization and control uses complicated off-line optimizers, with no online model adaptation or re-optimization. This study demonstrates the applicability of a class of adaptive critic designs for online re-optimization and control of an aerobic fed-batch fermentor. Specifically, the performance of an entire class of adaptive critic designs, viz., heuristic dynamic programming, dual heuristic programming and generalized dual heuristic programming, was demonstrated to be superior to that of a heuristic random optimizer, on optimization of a fed-batch fermentor operation producing monoclonal antibodies

The purpose of this paper is the investigation of the main Gunn diode oscillator characteristics with a hemispherical dielectric resonator which is shielded by a metal cylinder. The frequency, output power and electronic tuning of frequency, the steepness of which allows one to estimate the frequency stability in relation to the parasitic change of the Gunn diode voltage, and their comparative analysis with the characteristics of generation in a similar open dielectric resonator.

Detection And Classification Of Impact-Induced Damage In Composite Plates Using Neural Networks, Rohit Dua, Steve Eugene Watkins, Donald C. Wunsch, K. Chandrashekhara, Farhad Akhavan Jan 2001

Detection And Classification Of Impact-Induced Damage In Composite Plates Using Neural Networks, Rohit Dua, Steve Eugene Watkins, Donald C. Wunsch, K. Chandrashekhara, Farhad Akhavan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial neutral networks (ANN) can be used as an online health monitoring systems (involving damage assessment, fatigue monitoring and delamination detection) for composite structures owing to their inherent fast computing speeds, parallel processing and ability to learn and adapt to the experimental data. The amount of impact-induced strain on a composite structure can be found using strain sensors attached to composite structures. Prior work has shown that strain-based ANN can characterize impact energy on composite plates and that strain signatures can be associated with damage types and severity. This paper reports the extension of this approach for damage classification using …

Dynamic Resource Allocation For Network Echo Cancellation, T. Gansler, J. Benesty, M. Mohan Sondhi, Steven L. Grant Jan 2001

Dynamic Resource Allocation For Network Echo Cancellation, T. Gansler, J. Benesty, M. Mohan Sondhi, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Network echo canceler chips are designed to handle several channels simultaneously. With the processing speeds now available, a single chip might handle several hundred channels. In current implementations, however, the adaptation algorithm is designed for a single channel, and the computations are replicated N c times, where N c is the number of channels. With such an implementation, the computational requirement is N c times the peak load for a single channel. The number of computations required in each channel, however, varies widely over time. Therefore, a considerable reduction in computational load can be achieved by designing the system for …

High-Power Microwave Wideband Random Signal Measurement And Narrowband Signal Detection Against The Noise Background, Marina Koledintseva, Alexander A. Kitaytsev, V. A. Konkin Jan 2001

High-Power Microwave Wideband Random Signal Measurement And Narrowband Signal Detection Against The Noise Background, Marina Koledintseva, Alexander A. Kitaytsev, V. A. Konkin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method of both measurement of power parameters of a microwave wideband intense random signal and detection of a narrow-band signal with unknown frequency and power against a background of this wideband signal is presented. This method is based on nonheterodyne frequency and power conversion using a gyromagnetic converter that operates in two regimes: resonance detection and cross-multiplication. The wideband spectrum envelope of a random signal is visualized, and by switching two regimes and using correspondent filtration of the converted RF signal, the narrowband signals can be detected and measured. The block-scheme and operation of a two-channel measuring device combining …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of measurement and monitoring of reflection and transmission properties of cement-based specimens (blocks of mortar, concrete) during long time of their service lives, including hydration process, and different curing conditions at microwave frequencies (X-band) are presented. A simple and inexpensive measurement system that utilizes the nondestructive and contactless free space method is used. Dependencies of the reflection and transmission coefficients on water-to-cement ratio, preparing and curing conditions of the specimens are demonstrated. It is shown that the reflection coefficient is approximately stable after hydration process while the transmission coefficient changes during long time of the specimen''s service life. …

Multi-Level Voltage-Source Duty-Cycle Modulation: Analysis And Implementation, Keith Corzine, J. R. Baker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-level converters have become increasingly popular due to high power quality, high-voltage capability, low switching losses, and low EMC concerns. Considering these advantages, the multi-level converter is a suitable candidate for implementation of future naval ship propulsion systems. This paper focuses on modulation techniques for the multi-level converter. In particular, a novel voltage-source method of multi-level modulation is introduced and compared to existing methods. The proposed method is discrete in nature and can therefore be readily implemented on a digital signal processor (DSP). The method is also readily extendable to any number of voltage levels. Results of experimental implementation are …

Reduced Parts-Count Multi-Level Rectifiers, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker Jan 2001

Reduced Parts-Count Multi-Level Rectifiers, Keith Corzine, J. Yuen, J. R. Baker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-level power converters have gained much attention due to their high power quality, low switching losses, and high-voltage capability. These advantages make the multi-level converter a candidate topology for the next generation of naval ship propulsion systems. The primary disadvantage of these systems is the large number of semiconductors involved. This paper presents a reduced parts-count rectifier which is well suited for naval rectifier applications where bi-directional power flow is not required. The proposed converter is analyzed and experimentally verified on an 18 kW four-level rectifier/inverter system.

Whispering Gallery Mode Dielectric Resonators For The Millimeter Wave Near Field Sensing Applications, Sergey Kharkovsky, Yu Prokopenko, M. F. Akay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The resonance characteristics of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in parallel-plate type cylindrical dielectric resonators (DRs) are numerically considered to optimise their characteristics for sensing applications. Results for the dependency of the resonant frequency, Q-factor, slow-down factor and electric energy filling factor of the modes on resonator parameters for both isotropic and anisotropic DR are presented. The possible applications of the results for millimeter wave near field nondestructive measurements are discussed.

20-H Rule Modeling And Measurements, Todd H. Hubing, Hwan-Woo Shim Jan 2001

20-H Rule Modeling And Measurements, Todd H. Hubing, Hwan-Woo Shim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 20-H rule is a printed circuit board layout guideline. On boards with power and ground planes, the fringing field at the edges of the board is contained by backing the edge of the power plane away from the edge of the board by a distance equal to 20 times the separation distance between the planes. In this study, test boards were built and measured with and without implementing the 20-H rule. The measured results are compared to numerical models. The results of this study show that, although the near fields are more contained, the radiation from a board implementing …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Based on derivative adaptive critics, a novel nonlinear optimal voltage/excitation control for a multimachine power system is presented. The feedback variables are completely based on local measurements. Simulations on a three-machine system demonstrate that the nonlinear controller is much more effective than the conventional PID controller equipped with a power system stabilizer for improving dynamic performance and stability under small and large disturbances.

Art/Sofm: A Hybrid Approach To The Tsp, Narayan Vishwanathan, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2001

Art/Sofm: A Hybrid Approach To The Tsp, Narayan Vishwanathan, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a new method of solving large scale travelling salesman problem (TSP) instances using a combination of adaptive resonance theory (ART) and self organizing feature maps (SOFM). We divide our algorithm into three phases: phase one uses ART to form clusters of cities; phase two uses a novel modification of the traditional SOFM algorithm to solve a slight variant of the TSP in each cluster of cities; and phase three uses another version of the SOFM to link all the clusters. The experimental results show that our algorithm finds approximate solutions which are about 13% longer than those reported …

Amplitude Modulated Droplet Formation In High Precision Solder Droplet Printing, Qingbin Liu, M. Orme, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 2001

Amplitude Modulated Droplet Formation In High Precision Solder Droplet Printing, Qingbin Liu, M. Orme, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are many methods used at present to apply solder to wafers, ceramics, laminate and flex circuit boards, and other substrates. Among these, high-precision solder droplet printing technology, which is noncontact, data driven, flexible and environmentally friendly, is a key enabling technology. This technology selectively deposits solder droplets only where required, and therefore needs no mask or secondary resist removal, uses materials more efficiently and creates less waste than other methods. Currently, continuous droplet formation from capillary streams is mainly achieved by application of the well-known Rayleigh instability in which a sinusoidal disturbance is applied to the stream, resulting in …

Robust State Dependent Riccati Equation Based Guidance Laws, S. N. Balakrishnan, Ming Xin Jan 2001

Robust State Dependent Riccati Equation Based Guidance Laws, S. N. Balakrishnan, Ming Xin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A robust state dependent Riccati equation based guidance/control is investigated in this study. In order to have a better design tool in terms of required interceptor accelerations, the target intercept geometry is formulated in a set of polar coordinates. With this formulation, we formulate a cost function with state dependent weights. In this study, we investigate the effects of such cost functions on the levels of interceptor accelerations. We also synthesize a neural network based extra controller to achieve the robustness in the presence of the target acceleration. In this manner, we will not need target acceleration estimation explicitly in …

An Optimal Control Based Treatment Strategy For Parturient Paresis Using Neural Networks, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2001

An Optimal Control Based Treatment Strategy For Parturient Paresis Using Neural Networks, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An optimal online feedback treatment strategy is developed for the parturient paresis of cows, based on nonlinear optimal control theory. A limitation in the development of an existing mathematical model for calcium homeostasis is addressed and the model is extended to incorporate control inputs. An optimal feedback controller is synthesized for the nonlinear system using neural networks. Though the main aim of this paper is to solve the biomedical control problem, the methodology presented in this paper is a general computational tool, which can be applied to solve a fairly general class nonlinear optimal control problems.

Scientific Evidence In The Sam Sheppard Case , Paul C. Giannelli Jan 2001

Scientific Evidence In The Sam Sheppard Case , Paul C. Giannelli

Cleveland State Law Review

My panel is discussing reliable jury verdicts, and my topic is "scientific" evidence. One way to approach this issue is to compare scientific evidence with other methods of proof. The trial lawyers that I worked with viewed cases as falling primarily into one of three categories: eyewitness cases, confession cases, and "scientific" evidence cases. In this scheme, anything that was not an eyewitness, confession, or snitch case was a "scientific evidence" case. These categories, of course, are neither exhaustive nor mutually exclusive; often two and sometimes all three are involved. Nevertheless, these categories are helpful because they present trial attorneys …

Inside An Agent, José M. Vidal, Paul A. Buhler, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2001

Inside An Agent, José M. Vidal, Paul A. Buhler, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

When we discuss agent-based system construction with software developers or ask students to implement common agent architectures using object-oriented techniques, we find that it is not trivial for them to create an elegant system design from the standard presentation of these architectures in textbooks or research papers. To better communicate our interpretation of popular agent architectures, we draw UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams to guide an implementer's design. However, before we describe these diagrams, we need to review some basic features of agents. The paper considers an architecture showing a simple agent interacting with an environment. The agent senses its …

Consensus Ontologies: Reconciling The Semantics Of Web Pages And Agents, Larry M. Stevens, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2001

Consensus Ontologies: Reconciling The Semantics Of Web Pages And Agents, Larry M. Stevens, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

As you build a Web site, it is worthwhile asking, "Should I put my information where it belongs or where people are most likely to look for it?" Our recent research into improving searching through ontologies is providing some interesting results to answer this question. The techniques developed by our research bring organization to the information received and reconcile the semantics of each document. Our goal is to help users retrieve dynamically generated information that is tailored to their individual needs and preferences. We believe that it is easier for individuals or small groups to develop their own ontologies, regardless …

Philosophical Agents, John R. Rose, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2001

Philosophical Agents, John R. Rose, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

Abstraction is the technique we use to deal with complexity. What is the proper kind and level of abstraction for complex software agents? We think it would be reasonable to endow agents with a philosophy. Then, by understanding their philosophies, we can use them more effectively. To endow agents with ethical principles, developers need an architecture that supports explicit goals, principles and capabilities, as well as laws and ways to sanction or punish miscreants. All of the ethical approaches described in this article are single-agent in orientation and encode other agents implicitly.

Trust And Persistence, Paul A. Buhler, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2001

Trust And Persistence, Paul A. Buhler, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

We rely on computers to control our power plants and water supplies, our automobiles and transportation systems, and soon our economic and political systems. Increasingly, software agents are enmeshed in these systems, serving as the glue that connects distributed components. Clearly, we need mechanisms to determine whether these agents are trustworthy. What do we need to establish trust? Agents are often characterized by features such as autonomy, sociability, proactiveness, and persistent identity. This latter feature is key in determining trust. When agents operate over an extended period, they can earn a reputation for competence, timeliness, ease of use, and trustworthiness, …
