Self-Evaluation Of Language Skills And Non-Linguistic Factors Through Www And E-Mail Tasks, Kanchana Prapphal
PASAA
This article aims at studying students' self-evaluation regarding their language skills and non-linguistic factors, i.e. cognitive skills, affect and IT knowledge in performing net tasks. Collaborative learning through the use of web sites and e-mail was tried out with twenty-five first year Engineering students at Chulalongkorn University Language Institute, Thailand in June 1998. The study was repeated in the same year with thirty-two first year Pharmaceutical Science students of the same institute to obtain valid and reliable conclusions. The analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data shows positive feedback of employing two net tasks to supplement the regular English courses.

Over the last decade, there has been a sea change in environmental law and policy, marked by growing interest in market-based instruments of environmental protection. In particular, approaches that explicitly commodify environmental impacts by creating markets for their sale are on the rise. These environmental trading markets (ETMs) now operate in a range of regulatory settings where parties exchange credits to emit air pollutants, extract natural resources, and develop habitat. In fact, every major environmental policy review in the last five years has called for even greater use of ETMs. Markets for environmental commodities represent the new wave of environmental …

Transfer Pricing: A Comparative Study Of The French And U.S. Legal Systems, Valerie Ciancia
Transfer Pricing: A Comparative Study Of The French And U.S. Legal Systems, Valerie Ciancia
LLM Theses and Essays
For several decades, the number of multinational corporations has significantly increased and this phenomenon has created a new problem: the issue of transfer pricing. Indeed, national states have observed that multinationals could simply manipulate cross- border transfer pricing policies in order to shift profits from one jurisdiction to another. France, along with the United States, was one of the very first countries to introduce transfer-pricing legislations. Although the aims of the French and U.S. transfer pricing systems are similar, the means used to apply such rules are different and often raise difficulties to get rid of double taxations. Nevertheless, many …

The Suitability Of Reclaimed Agricultural Lands Along The Lower Colorado River For Native Riparian Habitat Restoration, Patti Aaron
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this paper is to determine the suitability of agricultural lands for use in native riparian restoration efforts under development for the Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program. Assuming these fields are productive for crops, would they be productive for cottonwood-willow restoration? There are two aspects to consider: (1) the edaphic conditions required for three major LCR agricultural crops; alfalfa, cotton, and wheat, and (2) whether those conditions are consistent with the conditions required for the restoration of native LCR riparian habitat, primarily Fremont cottonwood (Populus fremontii) and Goodding willow (Salix gooddingii). Using the case study research approach …

Discrete Singular Convolution For The Prediction Of High Frequency Vibration Of Plates, Yibao Zhao, G. W. Wei, Y. Xiang
Discrete Singular Convolution For The Prediction Of High Frequency Vibration Of Plates, Yibao Zhao, G. W. Wei, Y. Xiang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Theoretical analysis of high frequency vibrations is indispensable in a variety of engineering designs. Much effort has been made on this subject in the past few decades. However, there is no single technique which can be applied with confidence to various engineering structures for high frequency predictions at present. This paper introduces a novel computational approach, the discrete singular convolution (DSC) algorithm, for high frequency vibration analysis of plate structures. Square plates with six distinct boundary conditions are considered. To validate the proposed method, a completely independent approach, the Levy method, is employed to provide exact solutions for a comparison. …

Great president. Lousy lawyer." In four words, a movie character played by the late actor Walter Matthau thus summed up the career of Abraham Lincoln. For most of the 136 years since Lincoln's death, general readers and scholars alike have accepted this verdict. Occasional Southern partisans have tried to belittle Lincoln's greatness as a president, but no substantial challenges to his overall reputation appeared between Edgar Lee Master's vitriolic Lincoln: The Man in 1931 and Lerone Bennett's Forced Into Glory: Abraham Lincoln's White Dream in 2000. During that span, hundreds of other authors portrayed Lincoln in every possible light: dynamic …
Toward High-Definition Reservoir Characterization, Gheorghe Luca
Toward High-Definition Reservoir Characterization, Gheorghe Luca
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A new methodology for high resolution reservoir characterization is proposed. It combined the advantages of the surface seismic (low resolution, large coverage) and crosswell seismic (improved resolution, small coverage).;The process involves deconvolution of a low resolution signal (surface seismic traces) into a high resolution crosswell seismic trace. The problem has multiple solutions and an analytical solution is hard or difficult to be developed.;This project proved that it is possible to predict high-resolution crosswell seismic traces using low-definition surface seismic traces. The statistical comparison between the real and the synthetic crosswell seismic traces gives confidence that future work in this area …
Fabrication Of Thin Film Nanoscale Alumina Templates, Paul B. Sines
Fabrication Of Thin Film Nanoscale Alumina Templates, Paul B. Sines
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Semiconductor nanostructures have superior electronic and optical properties that are expected to play an important role in 21st century electronic and photonic devices. Recognizing this potential, semiconductor nanostructures have been the focus of research over the past 25 years, and many ultra-high performance devices have been demonstrated. While the potential of this class of devices is clear, their commercial applications have been limited by the lack of a fabrication process suited to economical volume production. The initial method of nanostructure fabrication using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching is not considered practical due to its high cost and low …
Moisture Diffusion Through Vinyl Ester/Clay Nanocomposites, Apoorva Paresh Shah
Moisture Diffusion Through Vinyl Ester/Clay Nanocomposites, Apoorva Paresh Shah
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Moisture diffusion was studied through vinyl ester samples containing up to 5 wt% montmorillonite clay; two different kinds of clay surface treatments were employed to make the clay compatible with the vinyl ester resin. These nanocomposites were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical property measurements, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM pictures showed that the clay platelets were either exfoliated or intercalated, and the two different surface treatments resulted in different dispersion characteristics. All the samples were post cured, and the diffusivity of moisture was measured by soaking the samples in water at 25°C and noting …
Optical Gradation For Crushed Limestone Aggregates, Ken Cheng
Optical Gradation For Crushed Limestone Aggregates, Ken Cheng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The strength and durability of asphalt pavement is directly affected by the characteristics of its main ingredient, mineral aggregate. Besides material strength, research has shown that mixture properties such as particle shape and mixture gradation have a significant affect on the quality of the asphalt concrete. A standard called "Superpave" has been developed which sets forth specifications for material selection and methods for measurement of aggregate properties. These standards require monitoring of aggregate properties, particularly gradation. In this dissertation, the feasibility of developing an optically based method for determining aggregate gradation was explored. The physical system primarily consists of a …

Projection-Based Image Registration In The Presence Of Fixed-Pattern Noise, Ernest Armstrong, Stephen C. Cain, Majeed M. Hayat
Projection-Based Image Registration In The Presence Of Fixed-Pattern Noise, Ernest Armstrong, Stephen C. Cain, Majeed M. Hayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A computationally efficient method for image registration is investigated that can achieve an improved performance over the traditional two-dimensional (2-D) cross-correlation-based techniques in the presence of both fixed-pattern and temporal noise. The method relies on transforming each image in the sequence of frames into two vector projections formed by accumulating pixel values along the rows and columns of the image. The vector projections corresponding to successive frames are in turn used to estimate the individual horizontal and vertical components of the shift by means of a one-dimensional (1-D) cross-correlation-based estimator. While gradient-based shift estimation techniques are computationally efficient, they often …

Transforming Defense An Era Of Peace And Prosperity, Conrad C. Crane Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The ideas and issues presented in this collection of papers from the Twelfth Annual Strategy Conference conducted by the U.S. Army War College in April 2001 will educate and inform anyone interested in the past and future course of American defense reform. Though conference attendees had many differing opinions about the barriers to defense transformation and how to overcome them, a broad consensus formed that some change is essential to meet future security requirements. They observed at the time that it is ironic that the peace which creates the prosperity and wealth to fund transformation and permits a window of …

The objective of this study was to develop an X-ray computed tomographic method for pulmonary arterial morphometry. The lungs were removed from a rat, and the pulmonary arterial tree was filled with perfluorooctyl bromide to enhance X-ray absorbance. At each of four pulmonary arterial pressures (30, 21, 12, and 5.4 mmHg), the lungs were rotated within the cone of the X-ray beam that was projected from a microfocal X-ray source onto an image intensifier, and 360 images were obtained at 1° increments. The three-dimensional image volumes were reconstructed with isotropic resolution with the use of a cone beam reconstruction algorithm. …

Factor Substitution And Endogenous Growth, Hing-Man Leung
Factor Substitution And Endogenous Growth, Hing-Man Leung
Research Collection School Of Economics
We argue that the degree of substitutability between skilled and unskilled workers in production increases long-term income growth rate. Growth rate reaches its maximum when such factors are perfect substitutes, but falls to zero when they are perfect complements. This model brings together the diverging relative wage and the human-capital-growth literature. Easier substitution absorbs more workers into the skilled profession, and their training fuels human capital accumulation and growth. Our result implies, among other things, that growth is positively related to between-and within-group inequality.
