Electrochemical Fabrication Of Semiconductor Nanostructure Arrays For Photonic Applications, Stephen Patrick Mcginnis Dec 2001

Electrochemical Fabrication Of Semiconductor Nanostructure Arrays For Photonic Applications, Stephen Patrick Mcginnis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Theoretical and experimental investigations of the properties of semiconductor nanostructures have been an active area of research due to the enhanced performance that is observed when electrons and holes are spatially confined in one, two or three dimensions. However, the development of viable photonic devices using this phenomenon requires the development of appropriate fabrication techniques that can provide control over nanostructure size, material composition, and periodicity for structures with dimensions less than 20 nm. To address these challenges, a nanostructure synthesis technique has been developed that is based on the self-organization of nanometer scale pores during the anodization of aluminum …

Investigation Of Diesel Soot-Mediated Oils And Additive Package On Wear, Santhosh Kumar Balla Dec 2001

Investigation Of Diesel Soot-Mediated Oils And Additive Package On Wear, Santhosh Kumar Balla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the current study, a statistically designed experiment was developed to study the effects of soot contaminated engine oil on wear. The variables that were considered were the Base stock (Group1, Group2), Dispersant level and ZDP level. The above three variables were formulated at two levels: Low (-1), and High (1), which resulted in 23 matrix (8 oil blends). Soot was also one of the variables and was tested at three levels: Low (-1), Medium (0) and High (1).;A three-body-wear machine was employed to simulate and estimate the extent of wear, as it is very difficult to test each oil …

Multifractal Analysis Of Memory Usage Patterns, Jonathan Browning Crowell Dec 2001

Multifractal Analysis Of Memory Usage Patterns, Jonathan Browning Crowell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The discovery of fractal phenomenon in computer-related areas such as network traffic flow leads to the hypothesis that many computer resources display fractal characteristics. The goal of this study is to apply fractal analysis to computer memory usage patterns. We devise methods for calculating the Holder exponent of a time series and calculating the fractal dimension of a plot of a time series. These methods are then applied to memory-related data collected from a Unix server. We find that our methods for calculating the Holder exponent of a time series yield results that are independently confirmed through calculation of the …

Development Of Instrumentation For The Investigation Of Surface Regeneration For Candle Filters, Sean Patrick Gregory

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two methods of improving efficiency of coal based power generation are integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) and pressurized fluidized-bed combustion (PFBC). Both of these options require high-temperature gas stream particle cleanup for optimum efficiency. Candle filters in a pressurized vessel have received the greatest amount of attention in dealing with this topic, but problems still persist and there does not seem to be clear-cut answer to the problem. This research is an investigation of the candle filter cleaning process, a process known as surface regeneration.;The objective of this research program has been to develop the instrumentation necessary to investigate the surface …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An existing Point Doppler Velocimeter (pDv) has been modified in an effort to improve the RMS velocity results. Improvements have been made by reducing the probe volume size by focusing the incident laser beam, thereby reducing the effects of spatial averaging on the mean and RMS velocity measurements.;In particular, the PIN photodetectors used previously, were tested using the reduced probe volume, and were then replaced by high-gain, high signal-to-noise ratio large area avalanche photodetectors (APD's).;Comparisons have been made between the data acquired and hot wire data obtained on the same jet flow, as well as data obtained in previous pDv …

Effects Of Baffles On Damping Lateral Fluid Sloshing Oscillations In Tanker Trucks, Rohit Kumar Tanugula Dec 2001

Effects Of Baffles On Damping Lateral Fluid Sloshing Oscillations In Tanker Trucks, Rohit Kumar Tanugula

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Partially filled heavy-duty tanker trucks maneuvering constant radius turns or lane change maneuvers have lower rollover threshold than other vehicles because of the high center of gravity and dynamic sloshing of the liquid payload. Payloads are often toxic and hence, rollover accidents can be catastrophic. Therefore, attempts to increase the threshold velocity and predicting its value under various on-road maneuvers are of paramount importance.;This research was aimed at studying the effects of baffles on reducing the lateral sloshing and thereby, improving the stability of heavy-duty trucks. Various configurations (horizontal, vertical, horizontal and vertical, and diagonal) of baffles were considered for …

Use of wood composite products has increased over the last decade in the market for construction material. Softwood species and soft hardwood species are the preferred forest resources for manufacturing these products. Reduction in available softwood forest resources from the Western states has forced a shift to use of more soft hardwood species in the Northeast. What impact this shift may have on the forest resources in the Northeast is not known.;The objective of this study was to canvass primary wood manufacturers in and around the forest of West Virginia and determine how roundwood consumption has changed since the shift …

The Pathological Politics Of Criminal Law, William J. Stuntz Dec 2001

The Pathological Politics Of Criminal Law, William J. Stuntz

Michigan Law Review

Substantive criminal law defines the conduct that the state punishes. Or does it? If the answer is yes, it should be possible, by reading criminal codes (perhaps with a few case annotations thrown in), to tell what conduct will land you in prison. Most discussions of criminal law, whether in law reviews, law school classrooms, or the popular press, proceed on the premise that the answer is yes. Law reform movements regularly seek to broaden or narrow the scope of some set of criminal liability rules, always on the assumption that by doing so they will broaden or narrow the …

Swallowing The Apple Whole: Improper Patent Use By Local Rule, Ellisen S. Turner Dec 2001

Swallowing The Apple Whole: Improper Patent Use By Local Rule, Ellisen S. Turner

Michigan Law Review

During patent infringement litigation, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure ("FRCP") and the federal district court's local rules govern the parties' pretrial discovery and motion practice. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has adopted the most comprehensive local rules to date covering pretrial procedures in the patent litigation context. The Northern District of California Patent Local Rules ("Local Rules") may come to have a significant impact throughout the federal courts, as it appears that other jurisdictions and commentators are looking to the Local Rules for guidance. For instance, the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property …

Western Culture And The Ambiguous Legacies Of The Pig, Benton Jay Komins Dec 2001

Western Culture And The Ambiguous Legacies Of The Pig, Benton Jay Komins

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Western Culture and the Ambiguous Legacies of the Pig," Benton Jay Komins provides a cultural lineage of the pig by the example and reading of Piggies by the Beatles. Komins observes that Piggies enacts the possibilities of the ubiquitous pig in Western culture by juxtaposing swinish antics with interpretations of limitation and heartbreak thereby forcing listeners to blur the distinctions between struggle, unrequited love, and boorishness. Komins continues his discussion by locating this juxtaposition within the Western pantheon of real, metaphorical, and imaginary animals, where the pig is noted to have obsessively endured. Komins argues that through …

Accommodating Pedestrian And Bicycle Access On Parkers Mill Road From New Circle Road To Man O War Boulevard In Lexington, Lisa Aultman-Hall, Eric Jackson

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In the fall of 2000 the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) began a planning study on behalf of the Kentucky Transporta tion Cabinet (KYTC) to investigate the bicycle and pedestrian access on KY 1968 (Parkers Mill Road) from Man O War Boulevard to New Circle Road in Lexington. The 1-mile section has a rural design with two 9-foot lanes, limited 3-foot earth shoulders and adjacent objects in the clear zone making travel on this road uncomfortable for pedestrians and cyclists. Yet this section of Parkers Mill Road represents a line of desired non-motorized travel due to parks, neighborhoods, a local high …

A Framework For Multilingual Information Processing, Steven Edward Atkin Dec 2001

A Framework For Multilingual Information Processing, Steven Edward Atkin

Theses and Dissertations

Recent and (continuing) rapid increases in computing power now enable more of humankind's written communication to be represented as digital data. The most recent and obvious changes in multilingual information processing have been the introduction of larger character sets encompassing more writing systems. Yet the very richness of larger collections of characters has made the interpretation and processing of text more difficult. The many competing motivations (satisfying the needs of linguists, computer scientists, and typographers) for standardizing character sets threaten the purpose of information processing: accurate and facile manipulation of data. Existing character sets are constructed without a consistent strategy …

Enzymatic Deinking Of Flexographic Water-Based Inks, Somporn Chaiarrekij Dec 2001

Enzymatic Deinking Of Flexographic Water-Based Inks, Somporn Chaiarrekij

Masters Theses

Introduction

In recent times, environmental concerns have led to the development of water-based flexographic and rotogravure inks. One of the major concerns for water-based inks is their deinkability. Wash deinking of flexographic water-based ink is much more effective than flotation deinking; however, it has two major disadvantages. It consumes large amounts of water and gives a lower yield than flotation due to the loss of fines and fillers in the effluent (1).

Principal Selection And The Stories Superintendents Tell., Linda L. Baker Dec 2001

Principal Selection And The Stories Superintendents Tell., Linda L. Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In addition to licensure and certification, there are particular qualities and personal characteristics superintendents look for when hiring a principal. With fewer principal applicants and increased projected needs for principals, it was important to explore the superintendent's reasoning when hiring a principal.

A qualitative research method employing elite interviews was used to explore the criteria that superintendents employ in their process of selecting a principal. When talking about the hiring of principals, superintendents invariably began with the selection process. Teachers, community members, parents, former employers, and college professors gave input in formal or informal ways. Superintendents looked for experience both …
