Natural History And Phytogeography Of The Loess Hills And Ravines, Lower Mississippi Embayment., Igor Igorevich Ignatov Jan 2001

Natural History And Phytogeography Of The Loess Hills And Ravines, Lower Mississippi Embayment., Igor Igorevich Ignatov

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although located near the middle of the Southeastern Coastal Plain, the hardwood forests of the Loess Hills of the Lower Mississippi Embayment have never been thoroughly studied or satisfactorily described in the literature. This dissertation is a case study of the biogeographic variation in the species composition and structure of the mature ravine hardwood forests within the southern section of the Loess Hills, from Warren County, Mississippi, south to East Baton Rouge and Vermilion Parishes, Louisiana, as affected by latitude, physiography, edaphic conditions, and disturbance. A parallel goal is, on the basis of the current biogeographic conditions and successional dynamics, …

Metal Partitioning Among Tissues And Exoskeleton Of Palaemonetes Pugio And Its Role In Depuration And Trophic Transfer., Kristen Annette Keteles Jan 2001

Metal Partitioning Among Tissues And Exoskeleton Of Palaemonetes Pugio And Its Role In Depuration And Trophic Transfer., Kristen Annette Keteles

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this dissertation was to determine the partitioning of Cu, Zn and Cd between tissues and exoskeleton of the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio Holthius, and to examine the consequences of this association. The role of the exoskeleton in the potential for depuration of metals through ecdysis was examined first. The portion eliminated with the exuviae varied for each metal; 11% Cu, 18% Zn, and 26% Cd of the total intermolt body burden was associated with exuviae. Some fraction of Cu and Cd in the exoskeleton was likely reabsorbed before molting but excess Zn was likely depurated through excretion. …

Performativity And Performance: Representing The Tattooed Body., Mindy Elaine Fenske Jan 2001

Performativity And Performance: Representing The Tattooed Body., Mindy Elaine Fenske

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study I examine visual representations of tattooed bodies in three arenas of cultural production: tattoo conventions, advertising, and neo-tribal books. Through the methodological lens of genealogies of performance, I analyze these texts' construction of the tattooed body as classed, gendered, and exotic. I argue that contemporary representations of the tattooed body resist and reproduce discursive power regimes by surrogating prior cultural performances and representations of performance. I argue that contemporary visual representations of the tattooed body succeed in resisting discursive authority when they performatively cite multiple and transgressive authorities. I additionally indicate that the body in representation transgresses …

Development And Characterization Of Velocity Workspaces For The Human Knee., John Eric Fuller Jan 2001

Development And Characterization Of Velocity Workspaces For The Human Knee., John Eric Fuller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The knee joint is the most complex joint in the human body. A complete understanding of the physical behavior of the joint is essential for the prevention of injury and efficient treatment of infirmities of the knee. A kinematic model of the human knee including bone surfaces and four major ligaments was studied using techniques pioneered in robotic workspace analysis. The objective of this work was to develop and test methods for determining displacement and velocity workspaces for the model and investigate these workspaces. Data were collected from several sources using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). Geometric …

Spatial Variability And Isotopic Studies Of The Prairie -Forest Transition Soil In Louisiana., Asfaw Bekele Jan 2001

Spatial Variability And Isotopic Studies Of The Prairie -Forest Transition Soil In Louisiana., Asfaw Bekele

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The calcareous prairies of Louisiana are among the most endangered ecosystems in North America. The major threat to this ecosystem is the invasion by woody and herbaceous plants, primarily eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana ). The restoration and management of these rare plant communities require a thorough understanding of the soils supporting them. Geostatistical, fractal, and stable isotopic procedures were integrated to study the soil and vegetation spatial variability. The prairie soil was alkaline, the forest soil was acidic, and the transition soil was neutral. The spherical model described the spatial variability of virtually all the soil properties considered with …

Physiology And Lateralization Of Swallowing: A Comparison Between Young And Old Adults., Stephanie Kay Daniels Jan 2001

Physiology And Lateralization Of Swallowing: A Comparison Between Young And Old Adults., Stephanie Kay Daniels

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Age-related changes in discrete swallows have been well researched, but few studies have investigated sequential swallowing with little emphasis on age-related changes. It is also unclear whether the cortical representation of swallowing is lateralized to one hemisphere or is bilaterally represented. As such, the aims of this research were to examine deglutitive biomechanics of sequential straw swallowing (Experiment I), and study swallowing lateralization using a dual task paradigm in healthy, young and old adults (Experiment II). Thirty-eight right-handed men (young = 20, old = 18) were studied. Experiment I: Videofluoroscopic swallow samples of two 10-second straw drinking trials were obtained. …

The Across-Shelf Distribution Of Larval, Postlarval And Juvenile Fishes Collected At Oil And Gas Platforms And A Coastal Jetty Off Louisiana West Of The Mississippi River Delta., Frank Joseph Hernandez Jr Jan 2001

The Across-Shelf Distribution Of Larval, Postlarval And Juvenile Fishes Collected At Oil And Gas Platforms And A Coastal Jetty Off Louisiana West Of The Mississippi River Delta., Frank Joseph Hernandez Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A cross-shelf transect of three petroleum platforms and a coastal rock jetty (another hard-substrate, artificial habitat) in the northcentral Gulf were sampled to examine the role that oil and gas platforms (hard substrate habitat) may play in the early life history stages of reef-dependent and reef-associated fishes. The ichthyoplankton and juvenile fish assemblages were sampled at Green Canyon 18 (GC 18; 230 m depth, shelf slope); Grand Isle 94 (GI 94; 60 m depth, mid-shelf); and South Timbalier 54 (ST 54; 20 m depth, inner shelf) with passive plankton nets and light-traps and at a coastal rock jetty (Belle Pass; …

T -Cell Cytokines And Equine Nematode Infections., Jenifer Dee Edmonds Jan 2001

T -Cell Cytokines And Equine Nematode Infections., Jenifer Dee Edmonds

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To address the role of parasites on subsequent antigenic challenge, humoral, lymphoproliferative and cytokine responses to a single intramuscular injection of keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH) were compared between groups of ponies with high, medium or low gastrointestinal parasite burdens. Heavy and moderately parasitised animals showed a trend towards reduced KLH-specific lymphoproliferation and reduced antigen specific total immunoglobulin, IgG(T) and IgA compared to lightly parasitised ponies. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from medium and heavily parasitised ponies also had significantly lower levels of IL-4. These data indicate that heavily parasitised animals have uniformly decreased cellular and humoral immune responses to …

Navigating Knowing/Complicating Truth: African American Learners Experiencing Oral History As Real Education., Lavada Taylor Brandon Jan 2001

Navigating Knowing/Complicating Truth: African American Learners Experiencing Oral History As Real Education., Lavada Taylor Brandon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dominant explanations for why urban African American learners dropout is that these students are "at-risk" (Swanson, 1991; Sartain,1989; Levine, 1988; Macchiarola, 1988). Such explanations blame the victim while exonerating the role schooling plays in shaping students' "at-risk" conditions (Woodson, 1933/1998; Tatum, 1997; Freire, 1970/1997; Shujaa, 1994; Gordon, 1993). This research contests these explanations for why African American learners dropout by centering 10 African American students' voices to highlight the role curriculum plays at casting them at-risk. Consequently, this work shifts reproach from individual students' home environments to the larger structural dimensions of curricula (what we know) and instruction (how we …

Body Condition, Leptin, And Reproductive Characteristics In Horses., Laura Roland Gentry Jan 2001

Body Condition, Leptin, And Reproductive Characteristics In Horses., Laura Roland Gentry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A series of experiments was conducted to gain a better understanding of the effects of nutrition and hormonal manipulation on the reproductive processes of the horse. In Experiment 1, body condition score (BCS) and ultrasonic backfat measurements were highly correlated in mares, especially over the tailhead area. In Experiment 2, high BCS (HBCS) mares continued to ovulate during the winter anestrous period, whereas low BCS (LBCS) mares went deeply anestrous. Daily hormone concentrations were not affected by BCS, however, responses to hormonal challenges indicated cyclicity in HBCS mares and reproductive quiescence in LBCS mares. In Experiment 3, treatment of average …

Statistical And Simulation Modeling Of Brown Shrimp Population Dynamics In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico., Heather Lynn Haas Jan 2001

Statistical And Simulation Modeling Of Brown Shrimp Population Dynamics In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico., Heather Lynn Haas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation used statistical and simulation modeling to examine population dynamics of brown shrimp, Penaeus (Farfantepenaeus ) aztecus. Brown shrimp are ideal to use in examining recruitment because shrimp represent a common life history strategy, because they are commercially important, and because there are extensive data available. In the first section of this dissertation, I used long-term monitoring data to examine correlative relationships between annual, stage-specific abundance estimates and environmental factors. Criticisms of traditional correlative studies were addressed by using a spatially and temporally-extensive dataset, by comparing stepwise multiple regression to Bayesian model averaging, and by investigating nonlinear relationships with …

Evaluating The Taxonomic Status Of The Great White Heron (Ardea Herodias Occidentalis) Using Morphological, Behavioral And Genetic Evidence., Heather Louise Mcguire Jan 2001

Evaluating The Taxonomic Status Of The Great White Heron (Ardea Herodias Occidentalis) Using Morphological, Behavioral And Genetic Evidence., Heather Louise Mcguire

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Great White Heron was originally described as a distinct species (Ardea occidentalis), but is currently considered to be the white morph of a polymorphic Great Blue Heron subspecies (A. herodias occidentalis). Great White and Great Blue heron breeding ranges overlap in the Florida Keys (USA), providing an opportunity to evaluate the degree to which these two taxa are reproductively isolated. The current classification leads to predictions of no significant size difference (H01), random mate choice (H02), and no genetic divergence (H03) between sympatric white and blue herons. Sympatric Great White and Great Blue herons did not differ significantly in …

Systematics Of Neotropical Satyrine Butterflies (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Euptychiina) Based On Larval Morphology And Dna Sequence Data And The Evolution Of Life History Traits., Debra Lynne Murray Jan 2001

Systematics Of Neotropical Satyrine Butterflies (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Euptychiina) Based On Larval Morphology And Dna Sequence Data And The Evolution Of Life History Traits., Debra Lynne Murray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although satyrine butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) are highly diverse and found worldwide in most terrestrial habitats, they have received little attention from systematists. This research focuses on one of the largest satyrine groups, the euptychiines, found from central United States to Argentina, with the greatest diversity in the Amazon. The subtribe Euptychiina has a troubled taxonomic history. Most genera were erected without diagnoses and placed within the subtribe without being examined. Before this project was initiated, little was known of their basic biology and morphology. Therefore, considerable attention was given to this area in my research. I describe the larvae …

Molecular Systematics Of Eastern Cottonwood Using Aflp And Rapd Markers., Xiaohong Ma

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) is the fastest growing tree in southeastern United States with great potential as a biomass source. DNA-based molecular marker techniques are playing increasingly important roles in elucidating genetic diversity within species. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were employed to study genetic relationships among 57 clones from subregion Lower Mississippi river, West Central, and West Gulf. A total of 101 polymorphic RAPD markers were amplified from 14 primers. Six AFLP primer pairs resulted in a total of 457 polymorphic markers. Both RAPD and AFLP markers were able to uniquely …

Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitors On Equine And Bovine Follicular Dynamics And Steroidogenesis., Carlos Roberto Fontes Pinto Jan 2001

Effects Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitors On Equine And Bovine Follicular Dynamics And Steroidogenesis., Carlos Roberto Fontes Pinto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current scientific literature has shown that: (1) NO is a pro-ovulatory agent and inhibition of its production inhibits ovulation, and (2) NO has strong antisteroidogenic activity, especially on estradiol (E2) production by granulosa cells. The experiments described in this dissertation were designed to answer the following questions involving effects of NO on ovarian physiology: (1) is the inhibitory effect of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors on ovulation irreversible (follicular atresia) or temporary (delayed ovulation)? and (2) what is the relationship between NO and hCG-induced preovulatory luteinization? Accordingly, cycling mares were subjected to treatment with NOS inhibitors (L-NAME or aminoguanidine) during …

The Call From The Stranger On A Journey Home: Curriculum As Creative Transformation Of Selfhood., Hongyu Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Both utilizing and problematizing the notions of stranger, home, journey, and self through cross-cultural inquiry, gender analysis, psychoanalysis, and autobiography, this study attempts to draw a new picture of the human self and a new vision of curriculum. It draws upon the works of three great thinkers: Michel Foucault, a French philosopher; Confucius, an ancient Chinese sage; and Julia Kristeva, a French psychoanalyst. Traveling through a contradictory yet generative space provided by the Foucaultian subject, the Confucian self, and the Kristevian subject, this study intends to address the issues of differences, connections, and creativity in depicting a new landscape of …

Physicochemical, Functional And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Crawfish Chitin And Chitosan As Affected By Process Modification., Sandeep Kumar Rout Jan 2001

Physicochemical, Functional And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Crawfish Chitin And Chitosan As Affected By Process Modification., Sandeep Kumar Rout

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Traditional isolation of chitin from crawfish shells involves three sequential steps: demineralization (DM, removing calcium carbonate/phosphate), deproteinization (DP), and decolorization (DC, removing mainly astaxanthin). The first two steps can be reversed (i.e., DMP or DPM). Chitin is converted to chitosan by deacetylation (DA). Isolation steps may be shortened, depending on intended applications of chitosan. The first study investigated effects of (1) reversing sequence and (2) eliminating DP and DC steps on physicochemical and functional properties of chitosan and conversion efficiency of chitin. Twelve different processes: DM, DP, DPM, DMP, DPMC, DMPC, DMA, DMCA, DPMA, DMPA, DPMCA, DMPCA were investigated. DA …

Patterns Of Reef Fish Larval Supply To Petroleum Platforms In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico., James Marvin Tolan Jan 2001

Patterns Of Reef Fish Larval Supply To Petroleum Platforms In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico., James Marvin Tolan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Surveys of ichthyoplankton assemblages were conducted from four oil and gas platforms located in the northern Gulf of Mexico from November 1994 through July 1997. Diurnal collections, supplemented with light trap collections from the surface and -20 m depth, were taken quarterly during 1994 and 1995. Quarterly ichthyoplankton sampling at dawn and dusk only during 1996 and 1997 were supplemented with surface "lighted plankton net" collections. Of the 36,676 individuals collected, epipelagic (neretic and oceanic Clupeiformes, neretic Carangidae and Lutjanidae, as well as oceanic Scombridae) and mesopelagic (Myctophidae and Gonostomatidae) families comprised the majority of the ichthyoplankton. Reef-dependent (e.g., Pomacentridae, …

Classification Of Terrestrial Subterranean Fauna Of Volcanic Substrates In The Canary Islands, Josè L. Martín, Helga García, Y. P. Oromí Jan 2001

Classification Of Terrestrial Subterranean Fauna Of Volcanic Substrates In The Canary Islands, Josè L. Martín, Helga García, Y. P. Oromí

International Journal of Speleology

A system is proposed for classifying the species occurring in the hypogean environment in relation to their ecological and evolutionary characteristics. The ecological criteria utilized relate to the preferred habitat of the animals (the epigean, endogean or hypogean environment) and the evolutionary criteria specify the grade of adaptive modification in three characteristics: reduction of eyes, amount of pigmentation and extent of elongation of the appendages. The object of developing this classification is to provide a system appropriate for those regions - such as those with volcanic rocks - in which the cave faunas include elements originating in different environments, and …

International Journal of Speleology

Horaglanis krishnai is a blind catfish inhabiting the dug-out wells at Kottayam, Kerala. This fish has great zoogeographical importance as a similar blind clariid, Uegitglanis zammaroni is found only in the artesian wells of the former Italian Somaliland. Studies on certain behavioural aspects of the fish in captive conditions showed that, this fish even though is blind, exhibited a high degree of thigmotactism. Locomotion, comfort behaviour, feeding and light sensitivity of the fish were studied under laboratory conditions. Though the fish is totally blind and histological study did not reveal the presence of any light sensitive structures, the fish is …

Deposition Of Calcium Carbonate In Karst Caves: Role Of Bacteria In Stiffe's Cave, Claudia Ercole, Paola Cacchio, Giorgio Cappuccio, Aldo Lepidi Jan 2001

Deposition Of Calcium Carbonate In Karst Caves: Role Of Bacteria In Stiffe's Cave, Claudia Ercole, Paola Cacchio, Giorgio Cappuccio, Aldo Lepidi

International Journal of Speleology

Bacteria make a significant contribution to the accumulation of carbonate in severa! natural habitats where large amounts of carbonates are deposited. However, the role played by microbial communities in speleothem formation (stalactites, stalagmites etc.) in caves is still unclear. In bacteria carbonate is formed by autotrophic pathways, which deplete CO2 from the environment, and by heterotrophic pathways, leading to active or passive precipitation. We isolated cultivable heterotrophic microbial strains, able to induce CaCO3 precipitation in vitro, from samples taken from speleothems in the galleries of Stiffe’s cave, L’Aquila, Italy. We found a large number of bacteria in the …

Studies On The Cranial Osteology Of The Blind Catfish Horaglanis Krishnai Menon (Pisces, Clariidae), T. V. Anna Mercy, N. Krishna Pillai Jan 2001

Studies On The Cranial Osteology Of The Blind Catfish Horaglanis Krishnai Menon (Pisces, Clariidae), T. V. Anna Mercy, N. Krishna Pillai

International Journal of Speleology

Horaglanis krishnai Menon is a blind catfish inhabiting the dug- out wells at Kottayam, Kerala, South India. Studies on the cranial osteology of the fish show that the bones on the skull are firmly articulated. The frontoparietal fontanella is very large so that the cranium virtually lacks a roof. The sphenotics and alisphenoids are hardly recognizable and the orbital bones are entirely lacking. In osteological features H. krishnai closely resembles Uegitglanis zammaroni. But in H. krishnai the orbital bones are further reduced or even absent. The fontanella is larger than that of any other known catfish. These two species …

Biogenic Speleothems: An Overview, Paolo Forti Jan 2001

Biogenic Speleothems: An Overview, Paolo Forti

International Journal of Speleology

The idea that speleothems may be somehow influenced by living organisms is rather old, but specific studies have only started in the last few decades and presently there are only a couple of systematic papers on this topic. The role of micro-organisms is perhaps the best investigated even if it is not fully understood, while studies over upper organisms and speleothems in a cavern environment are scarce and details are not always given on the involved genetic mechanisms. The aim of the present paper is to give an updated overview on these topics in order to enhance the interest of …

Feminism At The Millennium, Carol Sanger Jan 2001

Feminism At The Millennium, Carol Sanger

Faculty Scholarship

Sexism of all kinds – subtle and blatant, criminal and legal, commercial and private – is the topic of the three books under review. The books initially sort themselves out by discipline: Everyday Sexism and Subtle Sexism are anthologies whose editors and contributors are primarily sociologists; Speaking of Sex is written by a law professor and offers a more focused argument about the persistence of gender inequalities. Distinctions in authorship aside, the three books pose a pair of similar and painfully familiar questions: Why is so much still organized to the disadvantage of women, and what can (feminist) academics contribute …

Dementia Research: Ethics And Policy For The Twenty-First Century, Rebecca Dresser Jan 2001

Dementia Research: Ethics And Policy For The Twenty-First Century, Rebecca Dresser

Georgia Law Review

People in developed countries rank dementia among the most feared threats to human health and life. With an increasing portion of the U.S. population living into the seventh, eighth, and ninth decades, the incidence of dementia is on the rise. So is the incidence of dementia research. In an effort to lighten the burdens on future patients and caregivers, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and philanthropic organizations are devoting abundant resources to the study of dementia. Like most human endeavors, dementia research can yield both benefits and harms. On the positive side, research holds out the possibility of better medications and …

Thinking About Life-Sustaining Treatment Late In The Life Of A Demented Person, Thomas Finucane Jan 2001

Thinking About Life-Sustaining Treatment Late In The Life Of A Demented Person, Thomas Finucane

Georgia Law Review

This paper will consider a specific clinical situation: an elderly patient with dementia who becomes seriously ill, where treatment would likely be burdensome but might prolong life. Generic questions are described and the lawyerly Standard Paradigm is developed. Questions are raised about every step of the Standard Paradigm. Finally, there is a discussion of two treatment decisions that are commonly faced late in the course of advanced dementia: tube feeding and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
