During a visit to Isla Guadalupe from 31 May to 3 June 1996, we documented three species new to the island, the Barn Owl, Swainson's Thrush, and Hooded Oriole, and established first breeding records for the European Starling and Western Meadowlark. Red-shafted Flickers are now breeding on the island, representing a recent recolonization from the mainland following the extinction of the endemic population. We investigated the validity of Colaptes auratus rufipileus and concluded that it doesn’t meet the standard for phylogenetic species but differs from C. a. collaris at the 75% level usually associated with subspecific rank. The development and normal function of cells in the body depend upon interactions with other molecules. One such group of molecules, referred to as the extracellular matrix (ECM), is secreted by subsets of epithelial, endothelial, and mesenchymal cells within multicellular organisms. The laminin families comprise a set of soluble ECM glycoproteins that are required for structural integrity and development in many epithelial tissues. Ln-5 is a laminin isoform composed of three subunits: alpha3, beta3, and gamma2. In this study, I sought to determine temporal and spatial patterns of ln-5 expression in non epithelial tissues. The purpose of this study was to increase the knowledge about science teachers' and principals' perceptions regarding science standards-based reform efforts in Nevada. The intent of the Nevada Education Reform Act (NERA) was to improve teaching and learning by impacting the following categories: (a) instruction, (b) assessment, (c) accountability, (d) professional development, (e) curriculum, and (f) supervision. Integrins are cellular adhesion receptors whose functions are critical to the progression of solid tissue cancers. The research described here involves four projects aimed at understanding how integrins modulate key elements of carcinogenesis, (adhesion and migration), on laminin basal lamina proteins; In order to carry out these studies, a novel fluorescence based protocol for quantifying cell migration towards a bound substrate was developed (Chapter 2). This method is more reliable, efficient, and informative than currently available protocols. This dissertation is a feminist analysis of scientific articles published from 1990--2000 reporting findings from research on biological origins of lesbian and bisexual orientations in women. Informed by feminist standpoint epistemologies and the theories and empirical research of the interdisciplinary field of feminist science studies, I assert that scientific efforts to locate biological origins of lesbian and bisexual orientations in women are likely to be infused with culturally-based assumptions and beliefs regarding sex, gender, sexual orientation, and race. The current study attempted to develop an instrument to be used by instructors to conduct a comprehensive Web-based course evaluation. Four phases of instrument development were implemented. Phase I, involved the development if items through a review of the literature and the opinions of instructors and students enrolled in four Web-based mathematics courses. After the items were formulated and a response format was established, a questionnaire blueprint was developed. Plant succession following disturbance in deserts is difficult to study because there is no well-defined series of species replacements and "successional stages" contain many of the same plant species. Persistence of the same species through successional stages introduces the possibility that desert species could respond to natural selection induced by disturbed environments. This study details changes in perennial vegetation, plant distribution, and small-scale abiotic environments on the scale of individual annual plants in order to examine corresponding changes in plant character phenotypes and natural selection in response to disturbance caused by fire. Growth and gas exchange are predicted to be most responsive to future atmospheric CO2 concentrations within and ecosystems. It is hypothesized that elevated CO2 will result in enhanced seasonal growth, increased leaf area and extension of the growing season via increased water-use efficiency (WUE). Greater WUE could result in increased survivorship and productivity of desert shrubs, and may increase the importance of this biome in the global carbon budget. Elevated CO2 is also expected to influence future species distribution and abundance, which could alter structure and function, especially in arid ecosystems. Students bring preconceived beliefs and attitudes to their initial college experience. These predispositions influence their communication and interaction with faculty and others in the higher education environment. Previous research identified family, school, and peers as sources that contribute to the formation of students' predispositions. This study was designed to explore television as a fourth medium to college students' predispositions; Drawing from the perspectives of social cognitive theory and cultivation theory, portrayals of professors were analyzed in 15 episodes across three television programs. The ecological impact of beavers on a stream in the southwestern United States was investigated to determine if beavers have impact on community and ecosystem level processes in a manner similar to what has been documented in more mesic regions. Cigarette smoking is a significant public health issue and despite efforts, prevalence of smoking has not decreased in accordance with national goals. This study utilized a phenomenological approach to describe women's experience of successful smoking cessation. Pender's Health Promotion Model (1996) and Prochaska and DiClementes' Transtheoretical Model of Change (1996) were utilized. Twelve women who had successfully quit smoking were interviewed; Data analysis yielded a core theme of transformation to non-smoker. Sub-themes included motivational factors of image conflict and cues for action. Other themes included barriers to cessation and coping mechanisms. Interpersonal factors and unconditional resolve were influential. Activity-related affect …

Disability exists as a human universal based upon conceptual categorizations. Positive and negative forms of stigmatization exist cross-culturally, and are examined in a world-survey format in terms of emic socio-cultural level, subsistence economy, and religion. I suggest that responses to disability are cultural specific, and that these individualized responses are filtered through cultural perceptions of reality and transformed into various treatment strategies of care, euthanasia, and abandonment, in addition to common discriminatory customs, such as limitations on marriage eligibility.

This thesis investigates the fate of perchlorate in the Las Vegas Wash and Lake Mead resulting from the long-term contamination by the manufacturing of rocket fuels in Henderson, Nevada. The changes in perchlorate concentrations for the Las Vegas Wash and Lake Mead were investigated for the last 10 years by analyzing frozen water samples. An attempt was made to model the transport of perchlorate along the Wash, and to observe the transport and mixing of perchlorate within the Lake. The purpose of this study was to compare two viscosupplementation products, Hyalgan and Synvisc, that may be used to treat osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Hyalgan and Synvisc, have both been studied extensively against NSAIDS and placebos and have both yielded significantly greater improvements in reducing the symptoms associated with OA. Forty-one patients diagnosed with OA of the knee volunteered to participate in this study. Each patient received the standard protocol of lateral injections with extended knee of 2 ml of either Hyalgan or Synvisc using a 20 gauge needle. This thesis describes and discusses research which proposes that a system dynamics based-workshop can promote meaningful public participation in the resource management decision making process. The research tested the effectiveness of a system dynamics computer model for: (1) improving communication about technical data and stakeholder views; (2) increasing learning and insight into resource management issues; and (3) enhancing public trust in the decision making process. Parameters bearing on the performance of a full-scale 88-MGD enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) system were examined. Samples were collected for a 10-month period in a basin and in a secondary clarifier of the plant. Samples were analyzed for nitrate, total and ortho-phosphorus, COD, acetic acid, polyhydroxybutyrate, glycogen, calcium, magnesium, potassium, ammonia, alkalinity, TSS, ORP, pH, and DO. Profiles of the aerobic and anaerobic zones, and secondary clarifier showed that the plant is operating as an actual EBPR system, with sporadic phosphorus excursions. Thymosin fraction 5 (TF5), comprised of an array of small molecular weight peptides, partially purified from the adult bovine thymus gland, contains multiple biologically active humoral factors. TF5 influences T cell differentiation, lymphokine production and restores immune deficiencies in a variety of animal models in vitro and in vivo. Because TF5 generally enhances immune reactivity, we examined the effects of TF5 on the proliferation of HL-60 human promyelocytic leukemia cells. Utilization of poor quality waters in the urban landscape has the potential of saving large quantities of good quality water for higher priority uses. Bernudagrass in particular is well suited to be irrigated with poorer quality water. A two-year field study was conducted to determine the long-term effects of applying shallow saline aquifer water to two turfgrass sports fields. The water (0.69-- 3.4 dSm-1) was applied using cyclic irrigation during peak demand months (May--Oct). Treatments consisted of cycling saline water through the existing irrigation systems. This research examined the cultural practice of cranial deformation (annular and anteroposterior), and its effects on 27 craniometric measurements and biodistances among 350 prehistoric crania from the Azapa valley of northern Chile. Included among these 27 measurements were nine facial measurements previously considered to be unaffected by deformation. One-way ANOVA, Bonferroni multiple comparisons, and discriminant function analyses indicated that out of the 27 measurements were seven centrally located facial and basilar measurements unaffected by deformation: orbital breadth, palate (maxillo-alveolar) breadth, nasal breadth, basion-prosthion length, cranial base length, foramen magnum length, and foramen magnum breath. This thesis examines portrayals of terrorism in the New York Times during the 1990s. Using ethnographic content analysis, I analyze several dimensions of coverage including the emphasis given in articles to violence, the characterizations used to describe terrorists and their actions, the sources of information used in the reports, whether the cause of the terrorists are addressed, and the character of coverage for men and women terrorists. I argue that the portrayals focus on the most sensational and dramatic aspects of terrorism and authority's interpretations of the groups; they fail to provide readers an analysis of causes, contexts, and structural …

Inhibiting cancer cell migration could greatly improve the prognosis of cancer patients. Prior to commercialization of the Plopper laboratory designed a 96-well plate, we optimized our in vitro migration and cell viability assays to meet the standards set by the National Cancer Institute for use in a large-scale drug screen for anti-migration compounds. Using these assays, we measured the cytotoxicity and migration-inhibiting effect of dimethyl sulfuoxide, a drug solvent, in three cancer and one non-cancer cell lines. Next, we investigated plant-derived compounds called monoterpenes, known chemopreventive/chemotherapeutic agents, for non-cytotoxic, migration-inhibiting properties in MCF-10A normal and MDA-MB 435 cancerous breast cells. …

This thesis investigated parameters affecting perchlorate biodegradation in the Las Vegas Wash area in Las Vegas, NV. Perchlorate is known to interfere with the functioning of the thyroid gland of humans. Perchlorate concentrations along the Las Vegas Wash were found to range from zero to 1000 ppb, while perchlorate concentrations in the contaminated seepage were approximately 100 ppm. Microbial counts in 30 water samples from the Las Vegas Wash and the contaminated seepage indicated that indigenous perchlorate-reducing microbes are ubiquitous and present in reasonable numbers. Oxygen isotope analysis of shell material from the Camarones West Shell Midden and from the site of Quiani has revealed that year-round collection of shellfish for food by the people of the Chinchorro Culture was not practiced. Additional shell demographics from the site of Quiani further support the oxygen isotope results. Radiocarbon dating revealed that the midden sample spanned the Classic Chinchorro and Transitional Chinchorro epochs, from 5590 to 3830 B. P. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is a commonly cultivated turfgrass in Southern Nevada, one of North America's most arid climates. Recognized for its drought tolerance, tall fescue is nonetheless a significant water user in Southern Nevada. Since outdoor water use represents approximately 64% of all regional demand and peaks in the hot summer, efficient use of water on turfgrass such as tall fescue can make a significant contribution to water conservation as well as offset peak demand. This study examined mediating factors that lead to, or buffer against, development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after child maltreatment. Fifty-five children aged 8--17 years voluntarily completed self-report questionnaires and a structured diagnostic interview. It was hypothesized that (1) chronicity and severity of abuse amplify PTSD risk when a child has limited support networks, ineffective coping, external locus of control, affect dysregulation, and a dysfunctional family; (2) key family and victim characteristics would help to ameliorate effects of traumatic abuse; (3) the combination of precipitating and prophylactic factors would determine the effectiveness of managing traumatic maltreatment.
