The aims of the hydrogeological study were to assess the characteristics of aquifers within the weathered zone, throughout the Dongolocking Reserves and in the surrounding farmland; provide baseline data on root zone salt store (EM38) and vertical distribution of stored salts (EM38) through the use of ground-based geophysical techniques; identify remnant bush at risk of salinisation; suggest management options to address any observed salinity problems; provide a groundwater monitoring network.

The purpose of this report is to document an II-month study of the erosional effects livestock grazing had on Tajique Creek hillslopes in the Cibola National Forest, New Mexico. Two study areas were selected with similar characteristics. The two areas were located approximately one eighth of a mile apart and varied by ownership and use. The southernmost study area is Forest Service property in which local citizens have obtained permits for livestock ranching. The northern most study area is privately owned and has not been used for livestock grazing in the past 10 years. Eleven months of erosion measurements and …

In spite of the growing interest in this problem, insufficiency of information does not allow listing self-mutilation as a separate disorder in DSM-IV. The present research was aimed to add to an understanding the phenomenon of self-mutilating behavior from the point of view of Adler's individualPsychology. This study evaluated cognitive, academic, and behavioral differences among clinic-referred children diagnosed with different subtypes of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Children diagnosed with ADHD Predominantly Inattentive Type (ADHD-I), children diagnosed with ADHD Combined Type (ADHD-C), children in a clinical control group, and children in a nonreferred control group were compared on measures of cognitive ability, academic achievement, and behavior. It was hypothesized that the nonreferred control group would outperform the other groups on some of these measures. It was also hypothesized that few of these measures would distinguish among the ADHD groups. The results showed that there were no significant differences …

The purpose of this study was to examine students' expectations of and satisfaction with academic experiences provided by private career colleges. Trends in student expectations and satisfaction levels at private career colleges were identified using the USA Group Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) database for private career colleges for the years 1997, 1998 and 1999. In addition, differences in perceived importance and satisfaction levels based on gender, age, race/ethnicity, grade point average (GPA), and employment status were identified. This study investigated the relative influence of gender and sex on psychologists' diagnoses of histrionic (HPD) and narcissistic (NPD) personality disorders. Gender was defined according to conventional behavioral norms, and included the categories of masculine, feminine, and androgynous. Sex was defined by biological features, and included the categories of male, female, and sex-unspecified. Psychologists were mailed a survey and asked to assign a single diagnosis to a clinical case vignette that was equally representative of DSM-IV (APA, 1994) HPD and NPD criteria, but which varied regarding the nine possible pairings of a gender and a sex. This study investigated the impact of court-ordered participation in a psychoeducational course on stepfamily adaptability and cohesion. Thirty parental dyads, consisting of one biological parent and one stepparent of an adjudicated adolescent, were randomly assigned to the treatment or control group. Treatment dyads participated in a 5-session workshop based on the Strengthening Stepfamilies” psychoeducational program (Albert & Einstein, 1986). Both groups were administered a demographic data questionnaire and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale-III (FACES-III; Olson, Portner, & Lavee, 1985). Species are commonly segregated along gradients of microclimate and vegetation. I explore the question of whether segregation is the result of microhabitat partitioning (biotic effects) or choice of differing microclimates (abiotic effects). I explored this question for four ground-nesting bird species that an segregated along a microclimate and vegetation gradient in Arizona. Birds shifted position of their nests on the microhabitat and microclimate gradient in response to changing precipitation over nine years. Similarly, annual bird abundance varied with precipitation across 12 yr. Those shifts in abundance and nesting microhabitat with changing precipitation demonstrate the importance of abiotic influences on bird …

During 1999 we monitored Snail Kite nesting activity throughout central and south Florida as part of an ongoing study from 1995 to 1999 evaluating the influences of environmental variation on the demography of the Florida population of Snail Kites. We discovered three nests in red mangrove built approximately 2 m above water. These nests were located in the stairstep unit of Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, south ofHwy 441 in Lostman's Slough.

Behavioral interactions between coexisting species may reflect underlying ecological interactions or may arise from factors unrelated to ecological interactions between species. We examined behavioral interactions between two coexisting, migratory wood warblers that competitively interact on breeding territories in central Arizona, USA. The larger Orange-crowned Warbler (Vermivora celata) is aggressive toward the later-arriving Virginia's Warbler (V. virginiae) and responds to playback of Virginia's Warbler songs by approaching the playback speaker or by singing over Virginia's Warbler songs. Virginia's Warblers retreat from interactions with Orange-crowned Warblers and avoid the playback speaker when presented with Orange-crowned Warbler songs. Responses of both species to …

The methide ion, CH3-, is isoelectronic with ammonia, NH3. Two different autodetachment life times have been observed. Metastable autodetaching states of methide have been observed, with an autodetachment lifetime range of 17 to 667 mus using a fast coaxial ion-laser beam apparatus. The excited states responsible for autodetachment are presumably rotationally excited states. A rovibrational transition in methide has been observed at 3206.74 cm-1 using a fast coaxial ion-laser beam apparatus and sub-Doppler tuning techniques. The full-width-at-half-maximum was measured to be 22.65 MHz, which corresponds to a 7.03 ns lifetime of the vibrationally excited state. This is the first rovibrational …

This thesis is concerned with the immobilisation of enzymes on electrosynthesised poly (o- phenylenediamine) membranes for use on amperometric electrodes. The thesis opens with a discussion of the basic principles of enzymology and a review of a diverse range of biosensors, followed by a consideration of amperometry as governed by the Cottrell equation.

Glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase were co-immobilised in poly (o-phenylenediamine) on platinum electrodes at + 0.6 V versus Ag/AgCl. Using this approach the enzymes are entrapped in a strongly adherent, highly reproducible thin membrane, of thickness approximately 10 nm. This one-step procedure produces a glucose sensor with …

Conventional legal and economic analysis assumes that opportunistic behavior is discouraged and that cooperation is encouraged within firms primarily through the use of legal and market incentives. This presumption is embedded in the modern view that the corporation is best described as a "nexus of contracts, " a collection of explicit and implicit agreements voluntarily negotiated among the rationally selfish parties who join in the corporate enterprise. In this Article we take a different approach. We start from the observation that, in many circumstances, legal and market sanctions provide, at best, imperfect means of regulating behavior within the firm. We …

Several recent commentators have criticized trends in the patent system by suggesting that the goals of the system can be better achieved through a variety of approaches that avoid or mitigate the monopoly-type impact of property rights. Suggested alternatives include the use of cash rewards, buy-outs, and liability rules, as distinct from property rules. This paper uses the important contributions made by these commentators to reveal shortcomings in any view of the patent system that focuses only on incentives to engage in inventive activity. Although African Americans cast a majority of ballots rejected by counting machines following the 2000 presidential election in Florida, legal academic commentators have not grappled with the significance of race in their discussions of Bush v. Gore. This Essay uses race to expose structural shortcomings of merit-based assumptions about democracy embedded in the U.S. Supreme Court's majority per curiam. The Court prohibited a manual count of imperfectly marked ballots, effectively conditioning membership in political community on individual capacity to produce a machine-readable ballot. Despite the Court's individualized focus, however, merit-based assumptions about democracy interfere primarily not with individual rights, but …

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to assess, through naturalistic inquiry, the differences between and relationships among coping strategies of parents of murdered or abducted, long-term missing children, where the offender was non-familial. Multiple data sources were used to examine two areas: The perceptive differences of coping among parents of murdered children in contrast to parents of abducted, long-term missing children, where the offender was non-familial; and the ways in which coping strategies of parents of murdered children differ from the coping strategies of parents of abducted, long-term missing children, where the offender was non-familial.

Post-settlement patterns of habitat use along saltmarsh shorelines of Galveston Bay, Texas were examined for three sciaenids; spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus), red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), and Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus). Collections were made summer through fall of 1997 and 1998 using a 1.5-m beam trawl hand-towed along the outside edge of salt marshes. Sciaenids were collected from tidal pass, bay, and remote tidal creek areas to assess large-scale (bay-wide) patterns of distribution and abundance. Cynoscion nebulosus were smaller and most numerous at bay stations, with densities peaking in June. Conversely, S. ocellatus were collected …

In order to estimate the composition, distribution and abundance of zooplankton in 3 areas off the western Caribbean, samples were collected in 15 stations at South Coast and Chinchorro Bank, Mexico, and Hol-Chan Belize, from April to December 1996. Duplicate samples (2.5 m³) were collected bimonthly using a submersible pump. The pumped water was filtered through a 202 μm mesh net yielding a total of 20 zooplankton groups. Chinchorro Bank had 19 groups, South Coast had 15 groups, and Hol-Chan had 14 groups. The most abundant groups were copepods (43.1%), fish eggs (29.0%), foraminifera (12.0%), decapod larvae (5.7%) …
