Effects Of Depolarization And Low Intracellular Ph On Charge Movement Currents Of Frog Skeletal Muscle Fibers, Edward Michael Balog, Robert H. Fitts

The low intracellular pH and membrane depolarization associated with repeated skeletal muscle stimulation could impair the function of the transverse tubular (t tubule) voltage sensor and result in a decreased sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ release and muscle fatigue. We therefore examined the effects of membrane depolarization and low intracellular pH on the t-tubular charge movement. Fibers were voltage clamped in a double Vaseline gap, at holding potential (HP) of 290 or 260 mV, and studied at an internal pH of 7.0 and 6.2. Law professors occupy a twin role as scholars and (most of them, at any rate) as lawyers. Deborah Rhode has pointed out, in her contribution to this symposium, that the lawyer role of the professor carries with it some frequently overlooked obligations, specifically the obligation to perform pro bono service. I agree with her, and have ventured similar arguments myself. Here I will address the more purely theoretical side of the legal scholar's vocation. The themes of incursion and boundary-crossing unite disparate legal domains. Wherever human beings cross paths and share space, law or law-like traditions develop to regulate this terrain by distinguishing permitted from proscribed intrusion.' Crimes and torts, regulation and liability, claims and defenses to claims, private law and public law all use a variety of measures--punishments, administrative rules, equitable remedies, professional discipline, and informal or extralegal sanctions-to condemn undue aggression. Concern about aggression may be found in the law of every jurisdiction in the United States.

Objective: To evaluate the understanding of and attitudes toward risks of blood transfusions among transfusion recipients in Karachi.Methods: One hundred forty-one transfusion recipients from 13 major Karachi hospitals were interviewed. Indications for transfusion were obtained by reviewing the patients' medical records.Results: The most common indications for transfusion were surgical complications (n = 77, 55%), anemia (n = 34, 24%), and generalized weakness (n = 15, 11%). Most recipients (n = 103, 80%) had never heard of viral hepatitis, and 44 (31%) had never heard of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Ninety-four recipients (66%) believed that generalized weakness was a valid indication …

The Burakin Focus Catchment Project was developed between farmers and Agriculture _ Western Australia. The project was designed to give farmers an understanding of the salinity processes occurring within the Catchment and suggestions on appropriate management.

Work began in the Catchment early in 1999 and was complete at the end of 2000. Intensive hydrological investigations formed the basis of the study, which was complemented by surface water control and revegetation strategies. Agronomic issues associated with sandplain soils were raised by the farmers at the initial meeting and this led to a soil survey to determine the pH status of the …

More and more of Western Australia's agnicultural lands are becoming saline. Currently it is estimated that about 18 milliion ha of land are affected to a greater or lesser degree by salinity causing production losses estimated at about $70 million a year.

Unless ways are found to halt and reverse the salinisation of land it is estimated that another 4.4 million ha could become saline over the next 50 years.

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This paper outlines the basic principles of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). It particularly examines the approaches adopted in Canada, Australia and New Zealand and compares the successes of the different approaches. The impact of the different constitutional structures, and the commensurate jurisdictional issues that arise are briefly examined. This paper demonstrates the important premise that a complex multi-sectoral approach is required to have any success with implementing a national strategy for preserving oceans, and the importance of following the principles of sustainable development as outlined in the various international environmental agreements and conventions.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Copper(Ii), Nickel(Ii), Cadmium(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Zinc(Ii) Complexes With 2-Benzoyl-3-Hydroxy-1-Naphthylamino-3-Phenyl-2-Propen-1-On, Mehmet Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes of 2-Benzoyl-3-hydroxy-1-naphthylamino-3-phenyl-2-propen-1-on, which is a derivative of carboxamide, were prepared and characterized by elemental, spectral and magnetic methods. Based on the analytical results, electronic and infrared spectral data and magnetic susceptibility measurements, suitable structures have been proposed. The formation of the complexes in solution was investigated conductometrically. 2-Benzoyl-3-hydroxy-1-naphthylamino-3-phenyl-2-propen-1-on was found to be a bidentate ligand coordinating through enolic oxygen and amide nitrogen. The complexes of Co(II) and Ni(II) are proposed to have an octahedral structure, while Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) are suggested to possess a square-planar environment in the complexes.

Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) was applied for the determination of chromium, nickel and vanadium in biological materials (earthworms, feather, lucerne). Three different decomposition procedures of biological matrices are presented. The utilization of NH_4H_2PO_4, Mg(NO_3)_2 and Pd(NO_3)_2+ Mg(NO_3)_2 as chemical modifiers are investigated and compared. Optimal temperature conditions for the electrothermal determination of Cr, Ni and V are selected. Precision of the determination expressed as relative standard deviations for Cr, Ni and V varied from 6 to 22% . The detection limits are for Cr 8 \\mu g kg^{ - 1}, Ni 12 \\mu g kg^{ - 1}, and V …
