A Multi-Proxy Study Of Planktonic Foraminifera To Identify Past Millenial -Scale Climate Variability In The East Asian Monsoon And The Western Pacific Warm Pool, Stephanie Dannenmann

Geology Theses and Dissertations

High resolution paleo-climatological data from IMAGES core MD97-2141 (8.80°N, 121.31°E) located in the Sulu Sea within the western tropical Pacific reveal the first evidence of continuous millennial-scale variability in surface ocean conditions over the last 150,000 years. The millennial-scale planktonic foraminiferal oxygen isotope (δ18O) oscillations of Globigerinoides ruber (G. ruber) between 30,000–65,000 years (MIS3) are apparently in-phase with the Greenland ice core record and have amplitudes 1/3 to 2/3 the size of the Sulu Sea glacial-interglacial δ 18O amplitude of 1.3‰. In the same interval variations in planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca suggest that millennial-scale sea surface temperature (SST) variations were small …

Washington Law Review

Scientists who require multiple "research tools" (i.e., laboratory resources such as transgenic animals and biological receptors) to develop new drugs and medical diagnostic products are frequently finding that these tools are patented or subject to other proprietary constraints. Stacking royalty obligations and heightened transaction costs resulting from the proliferation of patents on research tools threaten to slow or stop the development of new drugs and devices critical to public health. Because U.S. courts have very narrowly interpreted the common law "experimental use" defense of patent law as limited to "dilettante" uses of inventions for mere "amusement" or "philosophical" inquiry, scientists …

Scholarship

A new species of Gastrotheca from the southern end of the Cordillera Azul in Peru seems to be most closely related to G. lateollota known only from the Cordillera Huancabamba in northern Peru. Both of these species and G. marsupiata, monticola and peruana produce tadpoles, whereas the other species of Gastrotheea in Peruvian Andes have direct development.

Searching for the secrets in the heart of the atom, or in the genetic code that makes each of us unique, IMSA's African-American and Hispanic alumni are extending the frontiers of science. They are achieving and contributing in many fields, engineering Illinois products, researching disease, teaching Illinois students, and improving Illinois technology.

The vignettes give an extended look at several alumni, and the snapshots give a glimpse of more. Here our underrepresented alumni tell how IMSA prepared them for academic and personal life, and gave them opportunities to develop tools for success.

The Illinois Virtual High School is being planned as an educational service managed by the Illinois State Board of Education to expand student access to challenging high school curricula aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards. Through the IVHS, Illinois school districts, non-publics and parents of home schooled students can provide students with access to a wider range of course offerings, with the opportunity to develop their capacities as independent learners, and with increased time and opportunity to achieve because learning on-line is neither time nor place dependent.

Schwenk And The Ambiguity In Federal "Sex" Discrimination Jurisprudence: Defining Sex Discrimination Dynamically Under Title Vii, Masako Kanazawa

Seattle University Law Review

This Note examines a new development in federal Title VII sex discrimination jurisprudence specifically in the context of transsexual and homosexual plaintiffs, describing the courts' gradual shift away from formalism towards a more realistic approach in this area. Part II begins by examining the anatomical sex rule established by the three major pre-Schwenk decisions categorically rejecting transsexuals' Title VII claims. This section then considers the two subsequent Supreme Court decisions, Price Waterhouse and Oncale, and the Ninth Circuit's Schwenk opinion. Part II concludes that the Schwenk court correctly read Price Waterhouse and Oncale as mandating a departure from …
