Effects Of Host Quality On Female Locomotor Activity In The Parasitic Wasp Nasonia Vitripennis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), Jilma H. Ellison

Upon encountering a poor quality host, a female parasitoid may need to disperse in order to find a host suitable for oviposition. The effect of host quality on locomotor activity was examined for females of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) using a natural host, Calliphora vomitoria. In the first experiment, females were exposed to either poor hosts (freeze-killed and stored at room temperature) or good hosts (fresh) hosts for three hours. Then, their activity was recorded for ten minutes. Females given poor quality hosts were more active than those exposed to good quality hosts. In the second experiment, females …

The floristic richness and diversity of vegetation in Arkansas continues to require and stimulate a growing body of taxonomic and ecological research publications. Peck and Peck (1988) listed 766 references, including those of the two prior lists. Since then we have gathered 417 additional references. The total list now contains 1,183 references, with 70% prepared or published since 1970. This update is provided for four reasons: 1) to compile a comprehensive source to direct and facilitate future studies, 2) to provide easier access to many reports not normally located in electronic databases, 3) to improve communications with botanists outside Arkansas, …

Salvinia, water spangles, is a genus of 10 species of free-floating heterosporous aquatic ferns with two species introduced to North America. S. minima Baker was introduced into the eastern United States by at least 1814 and occurs mainly across the southeastern United States. S. molesta Mitchell was recognized as a distinct species in the 1970s, was introduced into the United States as a water-garden plant in the 1980s, and has escaped and spread across the southeastern United States in the 1990s. It is recognized by federal agency as noxious aquatic weed. S. minima Baker was discovered in Arkansas in 1998. …

This report describes the events that led to an unanticipated archaeological investigation of the Pumpkin site, (38GR226) between November 1994 and December 1995. It details the problems incurred due to a sporadic work schedule, vandalism and ever-changing objectives. Ultimately, good fortune far out-weighed the bad because the data acquired at Pumpkin is among the  best ever obtained from a prehistoric Middle Woodland site on the South Carolina Piedmont. During our periodic work episodes, plow disturbed soils were removed from approximately 25 percent of the site to reveal 504 pit and posthole features. Only 37 of the features were excavated, but …

Cellular behaviour in primary roots of standard length 11.15 ± 0.33 mm from four-day-old seedlings of Dianthus caryophyllus Linn. cv. Grenadin were studied in vivo and in vitro. Parameters such as mitotic index (MI). chromosome count the ploidy level, the mean cell and nuclear areas and the cell doub ling time (Cdt) were determined from 2 mm segments of root tips. The MI value of the root segment decreased when transferred from in vivo to Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/l NAA. The subject of viral entry into, and subsequent progeny virus egress, from cultured cells, has been extensively studied using numerous scientific techniques in fields ranging from cell culture to biochemistry to microscopy. The atomic force microscope (AFM) is a novel, developing instrument with unprecedented capabilities and this study was undertaken to observe enveloped Semliki Forest virus (SFV) and non-enveloped Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) entry into and egress from cultured cells using the AFM. Virus particle structure of both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses was also directly examined.

Te 'Enana 'the people' of the Marquesas, French Polynesia, have been engaged for some time in the dialogic negotiation of their heteroglossic identity. Based on an ethnographic study of language socialization in the Marquesas, this dissertation examines how communicative forms are acquired within a changing socio-cultural matrix, as well as on how cultural habits and beliefs are produced and reproduced via verbal interaction.

Goss Moor NNR is a unique, rare and nationally-important wetland habitat in Mid- Cornwall. The majority of the habitats were created as a result of a long history of tin-stream mining, which ceased in the early 1900s. Phytosociological surveys of poor-fen and willow carr communities provide the first formal descriptions of the vegetation at this site. The poor-fen survey revealed twelve poor-fen vegetation types, which were distributed along a primary environmental gradient of organic matter depth, surface water height and bare substrate. The aim of this work was to develop a non-contact mode scanning force microscope (SFM) for application to biological samples within liquid environments. Given that biological samples are particularly soft in their natural state and that a liquid is the most difficult operating environment for non-contact mode scanning force microscopy, the development of an instrument that is optimised to image biological samples in vitro presents significant challenges.

Thrombophilia describes the familial or acquired disorders of the haemostatic mechanism that predispose to thrombosis. Inherited thrombophilia can be defined as a genetically determined tendency to venous thromboembolism Mutations in genes that code for proteins involved directly (or indirectly) In blood coagulation have been associated with prothrombotic status. β-Lactam antibiotics are commonly used antimicrobial agents in clinical medicine. Because of their frequent use it is perhaps not surprising that resistance to these agents has increased over the past few decades, thus compromising the therapeutic advantages offered by these agents. The most common cause of resistance to β-lactam-based antibiotics has been the evolution of a group of enzymes known as β-lactamases, which act by inactivating the drug through structural modification. Plasmid-encoded TEM β-lactamases are examples of these hydrolytic enzymes and are associated with the amoxicillin resistance reported in over 50% of all E. coli isolates.

Although language variation is widespread and natural,it is subject to judgement. Where a standard language has developed, other varieties tend to be judged against its "standards". While a number of overseas studies have found that this type of linguistic bias occurs in education and negatively impacts on dialect speakers, there has been little research in Australia. The research reported in this thesis investigates how teachers perceive the speech of school-aged students and whether the socio-economic status or level of schooling of the students influence these perceptions. Among the objectives of the study are to survey and document the diversity and richness of the Zingiber species for the purpose of conservation. A total of 144 accessions from 32 Zingiber species including 8 varieties have been recorded throughout Peninsular Malaysia. These represent 20% out of the 150 species in the Zingibcraceae family, known to exist in Malaysia. Nine new species and two new varieties have been described. Assessments of the health of rivers and streams in prairie environments would improve if the role of systemic patterns and processes among geologic-climatic settings in controlling physical habitat and fish communities were better defined.
