Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen

Odds ratio analysis was used to evaluate the relative likelihood of occurrence of blackspot (Neascus pyriformil, Chandler) infections among 14 species of fish collected from the Maple River in Buena Vista and Ida Counties in western Iowa. Prevalence estimates ranged from 0% to 47.4% with a mean prevalence of 11.9%. The rank ordering of odds ratios of infection allowed the species to be categorized as those with risks greater than, less than, and not different from average risk to infection within the Maple River sample. Lessons From An Inventory Of The Ames, Iowa, Flora (1859-2000), William R. Norris, Deborah Q. Lewis, Mark P. Widrlechner, Jimmie D. Thompson, Richard O. Pope

A botanical survey of the vascular flora of the "planning and zoning jurisdiction" of the city of Ames, Iowa (i.e., the area within a boundary 3.2 km beyond the current city limits) was compiled from 1990 to 2000. During this survey, 916 taxa (71 % native) were encountered within chis boundary. Literature reviews and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for specimens that had been collected in Ames since 1859 add 204 taxa to the flora. This total of 1,120 taxa exceeds the number of taxa known from any comparable area (including counties) in Iowa. We produced …

George Knaphus, 75, died Saturday, 20 May 2000, after a two year battle with lymphoma. He was born at McCallsburg, Iowa and resided on a farm near there except during his WWII service years and his undergraduate college years at UNI until moving to Ames in 1998. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1942, served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45 in the 112th Infantry 28th division in Europe, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Bronze Star. He graduated with a B.S. in education from Iowa State Teachers College in 1949, earning master and doctorate …

Seventy species of Myxomycetes have been collected directly in the field or observed later in the laboratory from field materials in moist chambers from Big Bend National Park, Texas. Collections were made over a 10 year period, 1989-1997 and 1999, during intensive seven-day fungus collecting trips to Big Bend in late September each year. McGraw (1968) in an earlier study of Texas Myxomycetes had reported 28 species from Big Bend, some of which were also found in this study. A total of 81 species are reported from the park. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the anti-oxidative activity of a new chemopreventive agent--dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and the mechanisms of action by which DHEA protect the thymocytes and DNA from oxidative damage. Methods: Agarose gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry, single cel! gel electrophoresis, chemiluminescence assay, triazolyl blue tetrazolumbromide (MTT) colorimetry, and three dimensional collagen gel assay were used. Results: In agarose gel electrophoresis, 10 nmol/L DHEA blocked the typical DNA degradation (DNA Ladder) induced by H₂O₂. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of control system techniques that are based on nonlinear concepts. One such method is the nonlinear inverse-model based control strategy. This method is however highly dependent on the availability of the inverse of the system model under control, which are normally difficult to obtain analytically for nonlinear systems. Since neural networks have the ability to model many nonlinear systems including their inverses, their use in this control scheme is highly promising. The dental basement membrane (BM) putatively mediates epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during tooth morphogenesis and cytodifferentiation. Type IV collagen a chains, a major network-forming protein of the dental BM, was studied and results disclosed distinct expression patterns at different stages of mouse molar germ development. At the dental placode and bud stage, the BM of the oral epithelium expressed alpha1, alpha2, alpha5 and alpha6 chains while the gubernaculum dentis, in addition to the above four chains, also expressed alpha4 chain. An asymmetrical expression for alpha4, alpha5 and alpha6 chains was observed at the bud stage. At the early bell stage, the BM …

Xia in 1986 combined Gracilaria salicornia, G. canaliculata (G. crassa), G. cacalia and G. minor into one species: G. salicornia. Two morphological variants of G. salicornia were collected from different localities in Malaysia. Variant A collected from Morib, Selangor grew on the roots of Avicennia. The samples showed absence of main axis; segmented constrictions throughout; cylindrical or slightly compressed thalli. Variant B was collected from the mudflats of Tanjung Tuan, growing on rocks, coral or forming mats on the mud. Pulsed-field condition specific for Pasteurella multocida B:2 have been optimized to obtain a good separation resolution. Restriction enzyme, NotI, was the most suitable as it generates discernible number of bands. Other optimised electrophoretic conditions were: 1.5% agarose gel concentration, 200V, ramped pulse time of 1-25 s, and a runtime of 26 h. This research is important for fast and accurate characterisation of this bacterial strain following an outbreak in Malaysia.

Until today there are still a high percentage of oral microorganisms have not been identified due to inability to isolate using the cultural method. However, identification of uncultivable microorganisms associated with disease will permits clinicians for a more accurate diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures. Unculturable microorganisms are also involved in disease and may account for treatment failure since their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents would be unknown. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine if consumption of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) by mice could induce apoptosis in adipose tissue. Other objectives were to determine the influence of feeding mice CLA for ≤2 weeks on body fat, energy expenditure, and feed intake.

Reproductive performance is a major concern for pork producers because the financial stability of a pork enterprise that produces piglets is substantially influenced by fecundity index (FI) for number of piglets born alive (FI = farrowing rate x litter size born alive). It is well known that farrowing rate and litter size are affected by numerous factors. A new reproductive technique that pork producers are hearing and reading about is intra-uterine insemination. Three experiments were conducted to determine the maximal amount of concentrate and forage that could be replaced with a new wet corn milling product. The corn milling product contained 23.1% crude protein, 9.9% ruminally undegradable protein, 13.7% acid detergent fiber, 40.3% neutral detergent fiber, and 2.6% ether extract (% of dry matter; DM). In experiment 1, 16 Holstein cows were assigned to one of four diets in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 28-d periods. Our observations of bovine follicles indicated that the original histological classifications of atresia were inaccurate. A detailed histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of antral follicles from bovine ovaries collected from an abattoir and from animals whose large follicles had been monitored by ultrasonography was conducted to investigate this further. Nidogen and CD68 were immunolocalized to observe the follicular basal lamina and macrophages, respectively. In randomly collected ovaries, approximately one quarter of all antral follicles were undergoing antral atresia, as designated in this study. Antral atresia was characterized by early destruction of the layers of the membrana granulosa closest to the …
