Most people associate precision farming or site-specific management with the global positioning system (GPS). It is used to locate the antenna of aGPS receiver on Earth. GPS provides the opportunity to record a set of geographic coordinates that specify a particular field location. Therefore, field data collected using GPS technology is georeferenced. Processing of these data is complicated, and software packages designed for precision farming applications have built-in capabilities to interpret the GPS receiver output. In American tort law, one has historically been allowed to do nothing and not be held liable for injuries to others resulting from that inactivity. Viewed perhaps more charitably, tort law does not punish citizens for minding their own business. People generally have no affirmative duties to aid or protect others -- you can watch blind people walk into traffic and not be sued for failing to stop them. It's not nice, but it's not tortious. The article discusses the challenges and potential solutions for states to access employer health plan information under the constraints of the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974. It focuses on the importance of such access in supporting Medicaid expansion programs, using Wisconsin’s BadgerCare initiative as a case study. The article highlights the growing concern about "crowd out," where public health programs may displace employer-sponsored insurance, and argues for balanced public-private health coverage. This study examines the portrayal of Southern Appalachian people and their culture in American drama, discussing works from time periods that range from the 1880s to the 1990s. The plays are grouped into categories that are reflective of mainstream America's perceptions of Appalachian culture: (1) the importance of family and gender roles, including the insider/outsider romance plot, (2) issues of violence and conflict between both internal and external forces within the region in the context of wars, feuds, and environmental and labor abuses, (3) the importance of folk practice and belief including tales of the supernatural, superstitious and astrological traditions, …

This article examines the recognition given to sexual minorities through United States asylum law. This article begins with a general explanation of the evolution of asylum law and an overview of the different categories of persons eligible to apply for asylum, particularly persons facing persecution as a social group. Then the article discusses the traditional construction of gender and sexuality in lieu of persons who do not fit into the dimorphic, male/female, gender and sexual categories. An experimental rotenone-impregnated pelleted (approximately 10 mg/pellet) bait was tested in force-feeding and field-feeding experiments as a method of control for common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Mortality rates of force-fed fish ranged from less than 40% when fed one pellet to 100% when fed more than 10 pellets. Mortality occurred within 48 h. Mortality rates of control fish did not exceed 10%. In reservoir feeding trials in 1994 and 1995, carp were fed for 2-3 weeks on a non-toxic, vegetable-based bait dispensed by automatic feeders, followed by one feeding of the bait with rotenone added. Carp ceased feeding on the rotenone …

The distribution and status of Iowa's fishes were last extensively described in Iowa Fish and Fishing (Harlan et al. 1987). Since then, numerous fish collections have been made in Iowa's interior and bordering rivers and streams. Excluding non-native species, there have been three documented accounts of new fish species distributional records in Iowa since 1987. In this paper, I describe new collections of crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella) and bluntnose darter (Etheostoma chlorosomum) from the Mississippi River. The first documented specimen of C. asprella in Iowa was collected in Pool 11 of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) in 1995. One specimen …

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] response to strip-intercropping with corn (Zea may L.) and oat (Avena Jativa L.) interseeded with nondormant alfalfa (Medicago Jativa L.) may be affected by soil moisture. A three-crop strip-intercropping system of corn, soybean and oat interseeded with nondormant alfalfa was established to determine the effect of tillage system and row position on soil water content and grain yield in the soybean strip. Duane Isely, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Botany, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, died on 6 December 2000. Dr. Isely was an outstanding plant taxonomist with expertise in other fields as well, especially in seed technology and weed identification and control. He was born in Bentonville, Arkansas, on 24 October 1918 into a family of academicians. His father, Dwight Isely, was professor and later Dean of Agriculture at the University of Arkansas, and his mother, Blessie Elise Dort Isely, also taught at the University of Arkansas and eventually received her Ph.D.

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen

Historically, the tetraploid and diploid species pair of gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis, were mapped collectively in Iowa because no macroscopic morphological characteristics useful in recognizing the two species had been found. The present study reports identification and separation of the species by counts of nucleoli in the palpebral membrane of the eye and by measurement of scanning electron micrographs of toepad epithelial projections. Subsequent morphometric data confirm that the two species are morphologically distinct in Iowa but that overlap in characters continues to make macroscopic morphology unreliable for identifying individuals. The paper presents a systematic monograph of Fallugia (Rosoideae, Rosaceae) consisting of one variable species, Fallugia paradoxa. Morphological, cytological and molecular data clearly support its relationship with Geums.l. rather than Purshia-Cowani, with which it is often allied. The species was named twice independently in 1825 from the specimens and drawings, respectively, assembled by Sessé and Mociño for their proposed Flora Mexicana. The paper discusses the nomenclatural history, morphological variation, and the polygarno-dioecious mode of reproduction of the species. No infraspecific taxa are recognized.

Possible natural hybridization among 11 taxa of Opuntia sensu stricto was investigated in the northern Chihuahuan Desert region through the use of experimental hybridization. Established plants representing specific taxa growing in the Sul Ross State University Opuntia garden were used for all experiments. Reciprocal crosses were made between putative parental taxa of field-observed putative hybrids, and each experimental cross analyzed for fruit and seed set. For each taxon, tests were performed to control for possible apomictic, autogamous, and geitonogamous seed set. From 1876 to 1880 in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, J. G. Schaffner made the first collections of a small grass that later was named Schaffnerella gracilis (Chloridoideae). The monotypic genus apparently was not encountered again by botanists until 2001, when, during a targeted search, we discovered it in the Sierra de San Miguelito growing along the Río Potosino, ca. 6 air km southwest of the city of San Luis Potosí. Nutrients can load directly to either the epilimnion or metalimnion of lakes via either differential inflow depths of tributaries or intentional fertilization of discrete strata. We evaluated the differential effects of epilimnetic versus metalimnetic nutrient loading using 17-m-deep mesocosms that extended into the deep chlorophyll layer of oligotrophic Pettit Lake in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. Addition of nitrogen plus phosphorus stimulated primary production nearly identically (2.4- to 4-fold on different dates) in both treatments, with the production peaks occurring in the strata where nutrients were added. The metalimnetic fertilization, however, resulted in equal or greater stimulation of chlorophyll a …

Developments in medical research have been occurring at a rapidly increasing rate during the past two decades. Expanding budgets, augmented computer capabilities, and new research tools have all dramatically enhanced research technology. Accompanying the proliferation of medical research are increasing concerns about research risks. This article focuses on placebo-controlled clinical trials. The use of placebos enables clinical investigators to compare results from subjects taking an experimental intervention to results from a group that is receiving an inactive substance, such as a sugar pill, in order to determine the efficacy of the new medication. Production Of A Novel Copper-Binding Ligand By Marine Synechococcus (Cyanobacteria) In Response To Toxic Concentrations Of Copper, Arunsi C. Brown, Andrew S. Gordon

Marine Synechococcus spp. are extremely sensitive to copper toxicity. Some strains have been shown to produce high-affinity, extracellular ligands of unknown structure which form complexes with free cupric ion. They are also known to produce metallothioneins (MT) in response to cadmium and zinc stress. In the present study, marine Synechococcus PCC 73109 (Agmenellum quadruplicatum BG-1) (Van Baalen) was exposed to three concentrations of CuSO₄ for various times. Size exclusion chromatography, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and reverse phase HPLC were used to isolate an intracellular copper binding ligand of low molecular weight (< 6,500 Da). The ligand was detected after exposure to ≥ 8 μM CuSO₄ for 2 hr in BG-11 medium. …

Sugar consumption can increase the longevity and lifetime fecundity of many species of parasitic wasps. Consequently, for these insects the availability of sugar sources in the field is important for their reproductive success. As sugar sources can be highly variable in quantity, space and time, the chances of finding a sufficient amount of sugar to increase longevity might be very low. Therefore, the reward from a single feeding event can be critical for the forager’s fitness.
