In July of 1998 something rather mundane happened: Lucas Rosa walked into Park West Bank in Holyoke, Massachusetts and asked for a loan application. Since it was a warm summer day, and because she wanted to look credit-worthy, Rosa wore a blousey top over stockings. Suddenly, the mundane transformed into the exceptional: When asked for some identification, Rosa was told that no application would be forthcoming until and unless she went home, changed her clothes and returned attired in more traditionally masculine/male clothing. This article proposes that language identifying human rights of women in U.N. Conference documents has its origin in several different feminist theories. An understanding of these theories can help to clarify meaning, resolve inconsistencies, and predict the future direction of language in U.N. documents. In a meeting in Cartagena, Colombia in February 1999, parties to the CBD, known as the Conference of the Parties ("COP"), could not agree on the proposed biosafety protocol drafted in prior meetings.3 However, in January 2000, in a meeting in Montreal, the parties to the CBD finally adopted the draft protocol, naming it the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety ("Cartagena Protocol or Protocol"). 4 When the Cartagena Protocol opened for signature at the CBD's COP meeting in Nairobi in May 2000, sixty-four governments and the European Union signed the Protocol . This paper examines the current conflicts surrounding the implementation of patent protection for pharmaceuticals. Part II outlines the specifics of trade agreements shaping the global intellectual property regime and the consequences for governments seeking to devise an essential drugs policy. Part III analyzes the process of obtaining consensus and compliance with patent protection rules through the negotiation and implementation of trade agreements, and the utilization of dispute settlement mechanisms. Electronic structure and bonding in metal phthalocyanines (Metal=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg) is investigated in detail using a density functional method. The metal atoms are strongly bound to the phthalocyanine ring in each case, by as much as 10 eV. The calculated orbital energy levels and relative total energies of these D_4h structures indicate that Fe and Co phthalocyanines have ³A_2g and ²E_g ground states, respectively, but that these states are changed upon interaction with strong-field axial ligands. The valence electronic structures of Fe and Co phthalocyanines differ significantly from those of …

Ideologies that have been superseded by more enduring political discourses and literary figures who have been succeeded by greater authors are frequently relegated to the footnotes of cultural scholarship. But sometimes these lesser-known subjects of literary history, properly attended to, provide unique opportunities for a richer understanding of aesthetic developments. The study of British modernism, in particular, can benefit from a willingness to examine forgotten political-cultural relationships. Indeed, the period's extreme ideological complexity and cross-fertilization has served to mask the important political roles played by less celebrated artists in the formulation of modernist aesthetic doctrine. Description Of Hakka, A New Genus Of Jumping Spider (Araneae, Salticidae) From Hawaii And East Asia, James W. Berry, Jerzy Prószyński

We describe a new genus for a jumping spider that was originally placed in the large genus Menemerus Simon 1868, from which the new genus is clearly different. They were later reclassified as Icius, then as Pseudicius, and still later as Salticus. These initial classifications were repeated by a number of authors. The distinctive features of the male, and somewhat ambiguous features of the female, do not fit any known genus; and this species is here assigned to the new genus Hakka.

Here we submit that mathematical tools used in population viability analysis can be used in conjunction with floristic and faunistic surveys to predict changes in biogeographic range. We illustrate our point by summarizing the results of a demographic study of Lobelia boykinii. In this study we used deterministic and stochastic matrix models to estimate the growth rate and to predict the time to extinction for three populations growing in the Carolina bays. The stochastic model better discriminated among the fates of the three populations. It predicted extinction for two populations in the next 25 years but no extinction of the …

Estuaries provide high quality nursery habitat for larval fishes due to high productivity, predator protection, and warm temperatures. Previous studies suggest that larval naked gobies (Gobiosoma bosci) are capable of upriver migration and estuarine retention despite net seaward flow. Gobiosoma bosci larvae were collected at a fixed site in the Hudson River estuary in late July of 1998 from 4 discrete depths to provide a time-series of depth-stratified abundance during both a spring and a neap tide. Larvae were concentrated at depth, indicating that depth preference behavior is present and will likely contribute to up-river transport. Harmonic regression …

A universal problem in the development of complex organisms is programming totipotent cells into specialized cell types. I have focused on the Drosophila fat body and the characterization of the positional information required for the adoption of a fat cell identity by mesodermal cells. Central to this study is serpent, a transcription factor gene, both necessary and sufficient for fat-cell development; I characterized the patterns of activity for regulatory regions that control serpent expression within the fat body. Prior research has demonstrated a general decline in cognitive performance with age, especially in Fluid Intelligence. This study sought to find a way to slow, halt, or reverse the age-related decline in Fluid Intelligence. Participants aged 50 and older with no prior experience working crossword puzzles worked crossword puzzles for 4 hours per week for 8 weeks. The Constant Group worked easy puzzles for the whole 8 weeks while the Dynamic Group worked easy puzzles for 2 weeks, intermediate puzzles for 3 weeks, and hard puzzles for 3 weeks. All participants were pretested and posttest on 2 measures of Crystallized …
