In recent years, fast growing nitrogen-fixing shrubs of the family Fabaceae, Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr., Crotalaria grahamiana Wight & Arn. and Tephrosia vogelii Hook. f., have been intensively used in western Kenya to improve soil fertility, control soil erosion and increase crop yield. Local farmers have recognised the benefits of rotating these plant species with crops, and this has facilitated the rapid spread of this improved fallow technology in the area. Genetic Diversity In Banana Weevil Cosmopolites Sordidus, Populations In Banana Growing Regions Of The World, Vincent Oduol Ochieng

Genetic variability in banana weevil populations was analyzed in a large number of samples obtained from 15 banana growing tropical countries using random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD). A total of 46 RAPD markers were studied. Within polymorphism as measured by percentage of polymorphic RAPDs, varied between 78.3% and 97.8%. Genetic variability was measured using Shannon's information index and partitioned into between and within populations components. Overall, genetic variation among C. sordidus populations was (Hsp-Hpop)/ Hsp = 25.3%. The genetic diversity for the species (Hsp) was 83.4%. The overall goal was to contribute to crop-productivity by developing sustainable pest management and the objective was to select and identify an efficacious local B. thuringiensis isolate active against the selected stem borers, C. partellus, E.saccharina, B. fusca and S. calamistis.Various isolates of B. thuringiensis were isolated from soils and dead insects collected from different places in Kenya. They were screened against various stem borers including C. partellus, E. saccharina, S. calamistis and B. fi1sca.Based on the relative potencies, seven isolates (ICIPE 001, 012, 023, 027, 040,054 and 061 were screened further and their LT 50 value determined. Instrumentation attached to captive marine mammals for open ocean research is an innovative and valuable approach for studying marine mammals in the wild. Direct real-time underwater observations are still needed for a variety of research projects. The goal of this project was to develop and test a system for recording and playback of sea lion dive depth data using the audio channel of an underwater video camera. A pressure transducer was installed into an aluminum waterproof camera housing. The extent and impact of dryland salinity in Western Australia was based on analysis of groundwater depth and trend and the risk of shallow watertables is derived from these two attributes. As dryland salinity is caused by shallow watertables, the risk of salinity is inferred from the risk of shallow watertables.

The first fertile whooping crane (Grus americana; WC) egg produced through natural breeding at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (patuxent) was laid in 1991. Prior to that time, all fertile whooping crane eggs were the result of artificial insemination. Since 1991, eight different whooping crane pairs at Patuxent have produced fertile eggs through natural breeding. Mean fertility averages over years for each pair range from 40% to 93%. Accurate population estimates of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) are important because management decisions, such as establishing hunting regulations, are based on those estimates. Counts often are made during aerial surveys when the cranes are congregated. A complete census may be feasible if the area to be surveyed is small and adequate resources are available. For large areas, resources may be inadequate for a census so partial counts (sample surveys) are made. Because cranes are gregarious, the counts in a sample of units may contain either a disproportionately large, or a disproportionately small, fraction of the total, leading to …

This paper discusses the extracellular matrix (ECM) and its involvement in organogenesis. Research was conducted to examine the ECM characteristics in avian cerebella. Specifically, the investigator wanted to demonstrate the presence of collagen fibrils associated with the surface of fissures in embryonic day-10 chick cerebella by using immunochemical analysis. The results of laboratory work completed thus far are inconclusive and suggest that the methodology of the immunolabelling portion of these experiments needs modification. It is suspected the autofluorescence was detected and if changes in the procedure fully account for this artifact, another assay's immunochemicals may recognize a highly aligned distribution …

The role of dietary carbohydrates, dietary fat, and body fat in the regulation of sleep and tiredness was determined by studying sleep and tiredness in nineteen female subjects of different body compositions. It was hypothesized that dietary fat and body fat interact to cause an increase in sleep and tiredness. Subjects were healthy college students between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. This study was dual-phased. Phase I involved a 21 day record of normal hours slept per day and self-reported tiredness. Mdmx Binding To Arf Affects Mdm2 Protein Stability And P53 Transactivation, Mark W. Jackson, Mikael S. Lindström, Steven J. Berberich

Regulation of p53 involves a complex network of protein interactions. The primary regulator of p53 protein stability is the Mdm2 protein. ARF and MdmX are two proteins that have recently been shown to inhibit Mdm2-mediated degradation of p53 via distinct associations with Mdm2. We demonstrate here that ARF is capable of interacting with MdmX and in a manner similar to its association with Mdm2, sequestering MdmX within the nucleolus. The sequestration of MdmX by ARF results in an increase in p53 transactivation. In addition, the redistribution of MdmX by ARF requires that a nucleolar localization signal be present …
