Effect Of Forskolin On Actin Polymerization In Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle, Mary Janay Bailey

Increases in intracellular cyclic AMP levels have been shown to affect vascular smooth muscle morphology. In the present study, effects of elevated cyclic AMP levels on actin polymerization were assessed to determine whether cyclic AMP induces specific changes in cytoskeletal proteins of vascular smooth muscle cells. Forskolin was used to increase intracellular cyclic AMP levels through direct activation of adenylate cyclase. Light and Electron microscopy was employed to appraise changes in the shape of vascular smooth muscle cells. Confocal microscopy was used to reveal cytoskeletal changes after exposure to M forskolin for increasing intervals of time. Differences in the expression …

This textbook is based on a different paradigm for organizing an engineering science core --- a systems, accounting and modeling approach --- that emphasizes the common, underlying concepts of engineering science. Although this approach is not new, as most graduate students have been struck by this idea sometime during their graduate education, its use as the organizing principle for an undergraduate curriculum is new. By focusing on the underlying concepts and stressing the similarities between subjects that are often perceived by students (and taught by faculty) as unconnected topics, this approach provides engineering students a foundational framework for recognizing and …

This report includes Mourning Dove Call-count Survey information gathered over the last 36 years within the conterminous United States. Trends were calculated for the most recent 2- and 10-year intervals and for the entire 36-year period. Between 2000 and 2001, the average number of doves heard per route decreased significantly in the Eastern and Central Management Units. No change was detected for the Western Unit. Over the most recent 10 and 36-year periods, significant declines were indicated for doves heard in the Central and Western Units. The clinical course and laboratory valuation of 21 patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Ehrlichia chaffeensis or Ehrlichia ewingii are reviewed and summarized, including 13 cases of ehrlichiosis caused by E. chaffeensis, 4 caused by E. ewingii, and 4 caused by either E. chaffeensis or E. ewingii. Twenty patients were male, and the median CD4+ T lymphocyte count was 137 cells/μL. Exposures to infecting ticks were linked to recreational pursuits, occupations, and peridomestic activities. For 8 patients, a diagnosis of ehrlichiosis was not considered until ≥4 days after presentation. Severe manifestations occurred more frequently …

Scrapie is a naturally occurring prion (PrP) disease causing a fatal neurodegenerative disorder in sheep and goats. Previous studies suggest that scrapie is transmitted naturally through exposure to the scrapie agent in wasted placentas of infected ewes. This study determined the distribution and biochemical properties of PrP cellular (PrP-C) and the distribution of PrP scrapie (PrP-Sc) in reproductive, placental, and selected fetal tissues and fetal fluids in sheep. Glycosylated, N-terminally truncated, proteinase K-sensitive PrP-C with apparent molecular masses of 23–37 kDa was present in reproductive, placental, and fetal tissues and fetal fluids. Safety Of Lntensive In-Home Family Workers, Gwendolyn D. Perry-Burney

Violence against social workers and other helping professionals has increased. Within this context, intensive in-home family workers were asked about their safety in working with clients. If family workers stated that that they felt only somewhat safe or not safe at all, they were asked to explain where they are likely to feel unsafe. Findings include concerns about safety. The author suggests comprehensive educational curriculum be integrated in agency training for new hires and seasoned employees; also, training should be implemented to increase worker awareness of potentially violent situations and how to de-escalate and defuse potentially violent clients.

Invasion by the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, has had negative impacts on individual animal and plant species, but little is known about how S. invicta affects complex mutualistic relationships. In some eastern forests of North America, 30% of herbaceous species have ant-dispersed seeds. We conducted experiments to determine if fire ants are attracted to seeds of these plant species and assessed the amount of scarification or damage that results from handling by fire ants. Fire ants removed nearly 100% of seeds of the ant-dispersed plants Trillium undulatum, T. discolor, T. catesbaei, Viola rotundifolia, and Sanguinaria canadensis. …

Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren) have increasingly been observed in loggerhead (Caretta caretta L.) and green (Chelonia mydas L.) sea turtle nests in Florida, and in the nests of freshwater turtles. They may be attracted to the disturbance, mucous and moisture associated with turtle nesting and establish foraging tunnels into turtle nests shortly after egg-laying, thus increasing the vulnerability of hatchlings to fire ant predation. We conducted experiments on a freshwater turtle (Pseudemys nelsoni Carr) to determine the potential impacts of S. invicta on turtle hatchlings. Over 70% of hatchlings were killed by …

Linking The Conservation Of Culture And Nature: A Case Study Of Sacred Forests In Zimbabwe, Bruce A. Byers, Robert N. Cunliffe, Andrew T. Hudak

This paper examines the role of traditional religious beliefs and traditional leaders in conserving remnant patches of a unique type of dry forest in the Zambezi Valley of northern Zimbabwe. We examined aerial photographs spanning more than three decades, interviewed and surveyed local residents, and met with communities to learn about the environmental history of the forests and the factors that have affected land use in the area. Our results show that forest loss is dramatically less in forests that are now considered sacred, or were in the past connected to sacred forests. Gender issues in African literature and cinema have always raised challenging questions. It seems that the real or supposed oppression of women is often Justified in biological rather than in social terms, which, in turn obfuscates the real issues. This essay addresses the problem of film reecritures, from a comparative perspective. In so doing we pay special attention to the status of the feminine. Our aim is to reconsider current trends and ideological changes in the transfer from literary to filmic text.

The binding of transcription factor ATF-1 to DNA contributes to gene expression and regulation of cell growth. Antibody Mab41.4, raised against ATF-1, and its derivatives Fab41.4 and scFv41.4 inhibit specific DNA binding in vitro and induce apoptotic death of tumor cells in vivo. Structural studies of Fab41.4 were performed to gain insight into the mechanism of action of this potentially therapeutic antibody. The optimal conditions for crystallization of Fab41.4 were determined. Crystals were needle-like in appearance, displayed C2 space-group symmetry and diffracted to a resolution of 1.6 Å.
