Feminist Perspectives On Erikson’S Theory: Their Relevance For Contemporary Identity Development Research, Gwendolyn T. Sorell, Marilyn J. Montgomery

In view of recent controversies about theory and self, identity development re- searchers need to examine the utility of their own theory. In an effort to begin this enterprise, we define what we see as the central concerns of Erikson’s theory—a life- span, psychosocial emphasis, and the notion of agentic identity development—and use a feminist standpoint analysis to examine the usefulness of these aspects of his theory in a rapidly changing, multicultural context. Dietary Habits Of The Gafftopsail Catfish, Bagre Marinus, In Tarpon Bay And Pine Island South, Florida, Paul J. Rudershausen, James V. Locascio

A total of 507 gafftopsail catfish, Bagre marinus, were captured by hook and line in Tarpon Bay and neighboring Pine Island Sound, Florida from June 3, 1999 to May 6, 2000 in order to identify foods of this understudied species. A total of 86 (17.0%) specimens contained only unidentifiable food, and 187 (36.9%) specimens were found with empty stomachs. Based on the index of relative importance, the pink shrimp, Farfantepenaeus duorarum, was the most important food for specimens ≤200 mm fork length (FL), amphipods the most important food for specimens 201-300 mm FL, and unidentifiable fish the most …

Bathynerita naticoidea is a numerically dominant gastropod in upper continental slope chemosynthetic communities of the northern Gulf of Mexico. A comparison of population size structure at four sites off Louisiana revealed site-specific differences in mean shell size consistent with different recruitment histories and growth rates. Where individuals grow to the largest size, population numbers are low and recruitment seems to be limited. Where individuals grow to the smallest size, populations are high and recruitment seems to be high. These patterns appear to parallel the population size pattern of the beds of Bathymodiolus childressi Gustafson et. al. 1998 inhabited by the …

The Reproductive Biology Of Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion Nebulosus, Along The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, James W. Warren

Spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, were collected from the barrier islands, Biloxi Bay and St. Louis Bay areas along the Mississippi Gulf Coast during April-Sep. 1998 and March-Sep. 1999. Female spotted seatrout reached 50% sexual maturity at 230 mm standard length (SL) (age 1), and 80% of age-1 spotted seatrout captured were sexually mature. Spotted seatrout have a 5-mo spawning season in Mississippi, ranging from mid-April to mid-Sep., although the onset of the season may vary annually depending on temperature. Histological analysis showed spotted seatrout are capable of spawning multiple times throughout the reproductive season, and batch fecundity was estimated …

Disturbance, loss of a part of the body, is an important component of life histories. In contrast to plants, sublethal disturbance is not common in animals. Damage to the test of Mellita is usually attributed to sublethal predation, but hydrodynamics may be a factor. We found test damage to Mellita tenuis on the Florida gulf coast is variable over space and time. Test damage is more frequent in large individuals. This could result from a greater period of time for predation to occur or a decrease in the probability of death from predation. Test damage was variable over space and …

Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources; they are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. Ecoregions are directly applicable to the immediate needs of state agencies, including the development of biological criteria and water quality standards, and the establishment of management goals for nonpoint-source pollution. Traditional sampling methods are inadequate for assessing the interrelated physical, chemical, and biological soil properties responsible for variations in agronomic yield and ecological potentials across a landscape. Recent advances in computers, global positioning systems, and large-scale sensors offer new opportunities for mapping heterogeneous patterns in soil condition. We evaluated field-scale apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) mapping for delineating soil properties correlated with productivity and ecological properties. Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

Here we review brief summaries by chapter and then derive some integrated conclusions across chapters. Recommendations are presented with respect to further research, outreach and policy consideration. Because several years have passed between the end of our field work and publication of this synthesis volume, we end with an epilogue that highlights changes and key events that happened at San José Llanga (SJL) and with collaborating institutions in Bolivia between 1996-9.

The current study was designed to examine the relationship between acculturation and SAT exam scores. One-hundred and seventy African American college men and women from a midwestern university participated in the study; 78 had SAT scores available. Participants' informed consent was received to obtain SAT exam scores and demographic information from the university's Institutional Research and Testing Center (IRT). Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the African American Acculturation Survey-Revised (AAAS-R; Klonoff & Landrine, 2000). Bivariate correlations were conducted to examine the relationship between African American acculturation and SAT scores and to examine the relationship between AAAS-R subscale scores and …

The longitudinal muscle of the body wall of Isostichopus badionotus may be considered a model for excitation-contraction coupling in echinoderm muscle. Other echinoderm muscles are reviewed by comparison with the model. Echinoderm muscle is also of interest as a model for ‘mutable collagenous tissue’; however, in that tissue, Ca²⁺ has been proposed to function both in living control systems and in regulation of non-living interstitial substance.

An Examination Of The First Sediment Cores From Mountain Lake, Giles County, Virginia, For Diatoms And Pollen, Jon C. Cawley, Bruce C. Parker, Terry L. Hufford

Mountain Lake, Virginia is a small, unique, oligotrophic, subalpine ecosystem in the southern Appalachians. Its geology, origin, climate, and history have influenced its morphometry, and therefore its sedimentology and algal flora. Radiocarbon dates establish specific Mountain Lake sediment ages at 1800, 4100, and 6100 years BP. Sediment core analysis suggests at least 6 prolonged periods when Mountain Lake probably was nearly dry or very small in size. These individual low-water periods (at approximately 100, 400, 900, 1200, 1800 and 4100 years BP) are evidenced by changes in diatom and pollen content, sedimentary erosion features, and the presence of wood fragments, …

College students from minority groups in the United States, Canada, and Tanzania were asked how they could be helped to learn effectively in a university mainstream culture. Eleven groups of undergraduate students and six groups of graduate students were involved in the study over 7 years, with the number of students per group ranging from 11 and 25 at the undergraduate level and between 7 and 29 at the graduate level. Five groups were studied in Tanzania in 1993, 2 in Canada in 1994 and 1995, and 10 in the United States between 1996 and 2000. Content analysis of the …

The earth has a limited atmospheric capacity to absorb more greenhouse gases generally, and carbon dioxide in particular. It also has a limited capacity for agricultural lands to store a stock of carbon that might be drawn from the atmosphere and thus help alleviate the global warming problem. There are alternative mechanisms and mixes of mechanisms that might be used to address both scarcities and to work within the atmospheric limits on emissions and agricultural limits represented the capacity of soil and land to store carbon. If carbon sequestration concerns are to be addressed through markets, the cap and trade mechanism is perhaps the most likely approach that will be taken in solving the carbon problem. This is based in part on experience with the sulfur allowances market that is being implemented starting with the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. It is recognized, however, that a great deal of uncertainty surrounds the matter of whether we might see emission allowance markets and the related carbon storage markets anytime soon.
